Abstract

The linguistic landscape in the food and beverage scene of Binjai City, North Sumatra, reflects and celebrates the city's rich cultural diversity and flavorful cuisine. This study explores the linguistic landscape of the food and beverage sector in Binjai City, highlighting how language use in public signage reflects both local culture and global influences. As the city experiences rapid urban growth and increasing exposure to global trends, its signage offers valuable insights into the intersection of language, identity, and commerce. The research aimed to (1) analyze the linguistic features of food and beverage signboards and (2) examine the reasons behind language choices made by business owners. Using a qualitative methodology, comprising observation and documentation, the study investigated 96 signboards. The results showed that 67.71% were monolingual, predominantly in Indonesian, while 32.29% were bilingual, with a notable presence of English. The inclusion of English was not merely decorative but served a strategic purpose: to project an image of modernity, professionalism, and appeal to consumers influenced by global trends. These findings reveal how Binjai's linguistic landscape is shaped by a dynamic interplay between preserving local identity and embracing international appeal. This research enhances our understanding of how globalization influences linguistic practices in urban settings, offering a valuable case study that informs cross-cultural discussions about language, identity, and commerce.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the significance of context in the 2024 Indonesian election campaign texts. The problem focuses on the role of pragmatic cyber context, which has shifted from direct speech contexts (face-to-face) to virtual contexts (face-to-face via technology), and is oriented towards the context of the situation. This study employs a descriptive research methodology with a qualitative pragmatic approach, using data from print media and social media collected between May 2023 and February 2024. The data sources consist of five social media platforms, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram, and five online news media outlets: Detik.com, Kompas.com, Tribunnews.com, Liputan6.com, and kumparan.com. Each source contributed 20 data points, resulting in a total of 200 data points. The data analysis process comprises the following stages: data collection, selection, coding, analysis, interpretation, and conclusion. The study’s results found that the role of pragmatic cyber context has shifted from direct to indirect (virtual or hybrid). The meaning of context in cyber text as a medium in political campaigns is found to be significant: it clarifies or elaborates on the utterance’s intent, emphasizes its substance, provides background and supports its intent, and details its intent. The role of context in campaign texts is to clarify intent, emphasize background, and support the utterance’s meaning.

Abstract

This study examines the intersection of gender ideology and power relations in The Handmaid’s Tale, a novel by Margaret Atwood that portrays a dystopian society governed by patriarchal control. Employing Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (FCDA) as the methodological framework, this research investigates how gender ideology is embedded and reproduced through the novel’s language and social structures. Specifically, the study addresses three research questions: (1) What elements of gender ideology are depicted in the novel? (2) How are gender ideology and power interrelated? (3) Why are these themes central to the narrative? Utilizing a qualitative approach, the analysis focuses on narrative and discursive elements to uncover representations of gender inequality and the systematic repression of women’s autonomy. The findings indicate that the novel reflects real-world patriarchal ideologies by illustrating how language and institutional norms uphold gendered power imbalances. This research contributes to feminist literary scholarship by demonstrating how literature can expose, critique, and resist oppressive social structures through discourse.
