Abstract

The existence of folklore as a folklore is assumed to be an entertaining story for children at bedtime. In fact, the folklore contains a lot of structured messages and messages conveyed implicitly. Folklore often reflects the creativity of traditional societies by still adhering to tradition as a manifestation of creativity that lives and is passed down from generation to generation. The study uses the opinion of Dundes (1965: 2) Bruvand (1965), Danandjaja (1997) and the concept of value according to Bascom in Danandjaja (1995: 3-20). Miles and Huberman's (2007) qualitative research methodology includes data collection of folklore texts, data presentation, and drawing conclusions or verification. Based on the analysis of folklore data, 10 folklore folklore were selected which were collected in the book Sukapiring et al. (1993). The results obtained based on the folklore text found ethnic values in folklore texts by interpreting behavioral trends as psychological symptoms based on the data found that the values in the Karo folklore data analyzed were found a) Educational values such as: the value of obedience to parents, the value of patience, b) Moral values found in folklore are the values of humility, forgiveness, and not being arrogant, and c) the religious values found in Karo ethnic folklore, namely: not being greedy, not playing gambling, and trusting. These values can represent the bias of the Karo ethnic community who instill values through folklore.

Abstract

The phenomenon of online media coverage is that many women's reports exploit the existence of women as objects to seek benefits from this gender, the news of the two women who are used as objects that are treated as biological satisfiers, as objects that can be harassed or even marginalized. The primary data of the study were 10 online media reports, using Nourman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis tool about "Exploitation and Marginalization of Women in Online Media Reporting". This qualitative descriptive research method aims to describe: (1) Marginalizing women's news in online media.Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that eThe exploitation of women in online media includes: a) Online prostitution, b) Women are made into commodities, c) Threats of digital violence, d) Women are sexually harassed, e) Harassment of women in the name of local culture, f) Contract marriage 'siri' marriage. Whereas the form 2) Marginalizing Women in Online Media is carried out such as: a) Title of online news that corner women, b) Marginalizing women by using diction, c) Lowering the dignity of women with culture, d) Lowering the dignity of women with terms.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis analyzes how betrayal trauma in the main character occurs as a result of the person she believes has betrayed her. The aim of this thesis is to find out how betrayal trauma occurs by looking for problems namely depression and anxiety from those described in the novel. Venus betrayed her stepfather by killing him to come out of sexual harassment that she could no longer accept because it caused her to be depressed and anxious. The research method used in this thesis is a descriptive-qualitative method and library research. A researcher collects data from the novel, articles, books, and journals. The result of this thesis is to reveal the truth that betrayal trauma can occur to the main character due to depression and anxiety problems she ever experiences.Keywords: Betrayal, trauma, depression, anxiety. ABSTRAK Skripsi ini menganalisis bagaimana trauma pengkhianatan dalam karakter utama terjadi akibat orang yang dia percaya selama ini mengkhianatinya. Tujuan dari skripsi ini adalah untuk mencari tahu dan memahami bagaimana trauma pengkhianatan terjadi dengan mencari kedua masalah yaitu depresi dan kecemasan dari yang tergambarkan di dalam novel. Venus mengkhianati ayah tirinya dengan membunuhnya untuk keluar dari pelecehan seksual yang tidak bisa lagi diterimanya karena hal tersebut menyebabkan dia depresi dan cemas. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini adalah metode deskriptif-kualitatif dan penelitian kepustakaan. Penulis mengumpulkan data dari novel dan dari beberapa sumber artikel, buku, dan jurnal. Hasil dari skripsi ini adalah untuk mengungkapkan kebenaran bahwa trauma pengkhianatan dapat terjadi pada karakter utama karena masalah depresi dan kecemasan yang pernah dialaminya.Kata Kunci: Pengkhianatan, trauma, depresi, kecemasan.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the method and type of self-corrections done by two professional translators in translating texts from English into bahasa Indonesia. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were the recording of translating advertisement texts from English into bahasa Indonesia process using Translog II and Camtasia Studio 8. The findings are (1) Meaning Correction is the most frequent type of self-correction with the frequency of 36.2%; (2) Return Correction is never used by the professional translators; (3) The professional translators apply the multidirectional method in doing self-corrections. Finally, it can be concluded that self-correction is the crucial part that the translator should not skip in producing a better quality translation. This research also proves that translators cannot rely entirely on Google Translate as it cannot ultimately deliver the meaning from the source text (ST) into the target text (TT). Consequently, the translation provided by Google Translate needs to be revised

Abstract

Abstract:The purpose of our study was to discover textual metafunction elements of the verbal text in one of the children‘s picture books entitled On the Move, part of the Wonderful World of English series. The data used in this research were lingual data of words, phrases taken from the particular picture book. The descriptive qualitative method was used in analyzing the data. The results of the study showed that the dominant element of the textual metafunction was topical themes and there were relations between textual elements and visual elements in making meaning from these children‘s picture books.  Keywords: metafunction, theme, rheme, children’s picture books Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian kami adalah untuk menemukan elemen metafungsi tekstual dari teks verbal di salah satu serial buku anak-anak bergambar, Wonderful World of English bernama On the Move. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kata dan frasa lingual yang diambil dari buku bergambar tersebut. Dalam menganalisis data digunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa elemen dominan dari meta fungsi tekstual adalah tema topical dan adanya hubungan antara elemen tekstual dan elemen visual dalam pembuatan makna pada buku anak-anak bergambar ini. Kata-kata kunci: metafungsi, tema, rema, buku anak-anak bergambar

Abstract

ABSTRACTCan self-assessment and reflection as a part of the writing process make EFL students enhance their writing? This article presents the findings of a semester-long study conducted at four universities in Medan, North Sumatera where writing portfolio including self-assessment and reflection practices were implemented to support students make their progress. Using pre- and post- test design, it was found that the writing performance of students who used portfolio mainly focusing on combination of self-assessment and reflection for their essay writing process over a semester more increased than students who did not. The growth of writing performance corresponded to students’ ideas of improvement in writing. EFL writers who were usually concerned with correcting surface-level errors (mechanics and vocabulary) rather than global errors (organization and content), in this study, partially focused on global errors. Keyword: self-assessment, EFL students

Abstract

What distinguishes literary works from other written non-literary works is the aesthetic value gained by using figurative language in most of literary works. There are various types of figurative language with different usages for each type. Metaphor is a type of figurative language used in literary works and becomes the focus of this study. Atticus is one of the famous poets in social media where his works have been published since 2017. This study aims to identify the types of metaphors found in the selected poems of Atticus', based on theory by Lakoff and Johnson (2003). The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The data of this study are sentences in which the metaphorical expressions are marked in italics. The data sources are the poems taken from Atticus' book entitled Love Her Wild, with a total of 20 poems selected. The results of this study show that all types of metaphor: structural metaphor, orientational metaphor, and ontological metaphor are found in the selected poems, where ontological metaphor becomes mostly found type.

Abstract

Writing Learning must still be based on Core Competencies (KI) which are then announced in Basic Competencies (KD) and Indicators through learning material. Similarly, the writing material results from field observations and observations. Add another competition for scientific publication of adolescents conducted at the District / City, Provincial and National Level. While the material can be achieved and competitions can be followed. In this paper, it is discussed giving habit transformation of writing through concepts and for example making students see general writing, then students look for references and field data. Only to discuss the substance of scientific writing needs field reinforcement data carried out by students and must be guided directly by the guidance teacher through habit transformation of writing so that the validity and writing of scientific writings can be accounted for. The results of habit transformation in adolescent students are quite significant, so that the 5 texts that have begun to be seen develop and several texts in the process of improvement. Of the seven texts prepared the results are quite encouraging. 2 manuscripts have started the results of their writings by fulfilling the rule of writing.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to determine the types of taboo words, the functions of taboo words, and in what context taboo words are uttered by the characters in the TV series. This study employed descriptive qualitative method. The sources of the data were 8 videos from the first season of Sex Education TV series and their transcripts. In analyzing the data, the theory of Wardhaugh (2014) was used to describe types and functions of taboo words and the theory of Fromkin (2005) to describe in what context taboo words are uttered in the TV series. The results of this research show that there are data of taboo words which are categorized into seven types; they are sex term, death, excretion, bodily function, religious matter, mother-in-law, and the left hand. The findings suggest that the characters use taboo words mostly to draw attention and to show contempt.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the problems in the application of Google Translate as a translation tool. The discussion focuses on the identification of the problems faced by the translators. This research was conducted by using the descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Some theories supporting this research were proposed by Munday, Imre, and also Ghasemi and Hasemian. The data sources in this research were taken from the questionnaires given to students of English Literature Department of USU. From the analysis, it was found that the biggest problems often faced by the students of English Literature Department of USU were the inaccuracy and mismatch of the meaning translated which reached 31%, followed by the inaccuracy of the language structure in the translation result which reached 30%. On the other hand, the findings also showed that the best solution to deal with these problems was to make self-corrections and check the meaning of some suspected words in the dictionary and make the best choice according to the context. With the same percentage of 29%, it could be concluded that the two solutions were claimed to be the best and most efficient for the students. The conclusion was that the use of Google Translate as a learning media in translation could be accepted and applied in the classroom. Based on the results of this analysis, it was revealed that students had already known how to solve the problems of using Google Translate.
