Abstract

The Sultan Palace is one of the art cultural heritages that has now become a historical artifact, containing important information regarding art styles as a result of acculturation. This study is a qualitative study with a descriptive analysis method. The approach used is the historical approach and interpretation to find traces of the historical development of the Hindu-Javanese art style and the meaning behind the spatial form of Keraton Yogyakarta. The results of the research explain that prehistoric art is purely determined by custom, and at the same time take its role in the formation of cultural arts during the Hindu period. Art activities were carried out to ensure that the survival of religion is based on an agricultural system of the people's lives who regard the king as having the supreme authority who is equal to the gods. The expression of the art in layout plan of Yogyakarta palace basically follows the theological concept of Vastusatra and the mythic beliefs of the pre-Hindu society which still continues today. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the expression of the form and content of the layout plan was inspired by religious considerations, and does not perform as mere aesthetic expression. The alignment of the micro universe with a macro universe is a reflection of the pre-Hindu and Hindu periods. Changes occurred as a form of acculturation, especially in the aspects of building orientation and spatial arrangement of Keraton Yogyakarta.

Abstract

The Musical Characters of Lagu Gedé Kepesindenan on Sundanese Karawitan. The researchis mainly focused on the three things: (1) to find the musical characteristics of lagu gedé; (2) to show thedifference on the musical relationship of lagu gedé song with a puppet show and kiliningan; (3) to show thecomplexity of the working relationship on lagu gedé, such as the relationship between the singing of Sindenand the hymns of alok, rebaban, gambangan, and kendangan. The ethno musicological approach of lagugedé is based on the work method of Wim van Zanten which is a musical approach with an anthropologicalperspective. The two aspects – musicological and anthropological – are respectively combined. Music isintensively placed as the main object in order to discover the basis of its relation with cultural and socialissues. The results of the research on lagu gedé show the role, process, interaction, and complexity of the musicalinterpretation which are characterized by a slow tempo. From the composer’s point of view or the musicalcomposition, lagu gedé is recognized as a difficult and rare form of pengguritan. From the performers’ pointof view (the sinden or female vocalist and the pangrawit or musician), a number of special skills are requiredin performing lagu gedé. These may include a good voice, a good command of the musical repertoire, tuning, and musical composition, and the ability to interpret the music and provide the unique sénggol-sénggol aswell. By the absence of lagu gedé, there will be more limited quality of interpretation and artistry of thesinden and pangrawit, and the musical skills and interaction among the musicians (such as the vocalist,rébab, gambang, and kéndang players).

Abstract

The Effect of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I on Kraton Yogyakarta Karawitan. Gamelan asmusical instrument or karawitan as a musical product of Kraton Yogyakarta has some specific characters. Itis still used as an identity and is recognized by karawitan society until now. This musical development wasfirstly introduced by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I. There are two important reasons which stimulatethe ideas of creating gamelan characters. First, the king’s authority conception puts the gamelan as one ofthe important heirloom. Second, Sultan’s personalities which are masculine, heroic, and patriotic becomethe influencing model of its development, and give some specific characters on each gamelan instrument andits musicality as well. Kraton Yogyakarta gamelan has many musical rasa(s)/feelings: glorious, strong, clear, steady, prestigious, ‘mrabu’ (like a king), and ‘ngratoni’ (such an atmosphere of Kraton).

Abstract

The cosmologic view of the Buginese tribe assumes that this macrocosmos (the universe) is arranged into three levels: Boting langi (the upper world), Ale kawa (the middle world), Uri’ Li’yu’ (the Under world). As the centre from the three parts of this universe is Boting Langi (the highes sjy), the place of Dewata SeumaE (God) to lie down. This view is represented in the traditional house building seen as the microcosmos. So, the traditional house of the Buginese is devided also into three levels (stacks), those are: Rekkeang (top floor) viewed as the head of the human being, Alle bola (the body of the house) viewed as the body, and Awabola (space underneath of the house) viewed as the leg of the human being. The three parts are centered at Posi bola or the house navel. The result of this research is hoped to enrich the knowledge treasury in the art sector, mainly the plastic arts related to the decorated arts obtained in the Buginese kings’ palace. Keyword: decorated art, Buginese tribe.
