Abstract

Older adulthood was the final stage of life characterized by physical, psychological, social, and spiritual changes. At this stage, fulfilling spiritual needs becomes very important as it provides a sense of peace, meaning in life, and readiness to face the aging process. Family support serves as a major contributing factor in helping older adults maintain and enhance the fulfillment of their spiritual needs. Methods: This study employed a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 157 older adults selected through non-probability sampling techniques. Data were collected using a family support questionnaire and the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES). Data were analyzed using Somers’ d with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The results showed that family support was in the good category (59.2%), and the fulfillment of spiritual needs was in the high category (72%). The Somers’ d test yielded a p-value of 0.000 and a correlation coefficient of 0.373. These findings indicate a significant relationship with a weak correlation strength and a positive direction. Conclusion: The better the family support provided, the higher the fulfillment of spiritual needs among older adults.

Abstract

Background: Maintenance hemodialysis requires sustained adherence to treatment schedules, medication, dietary recommendations, and fluid restrictions. Adherence may be influenced by patients' internal motivation and the support available within the family. Purpose: To examine the associations of self-motivation and family support with hemodialysis therapy adherence among patients with chronic kidney disease. Method: This cross-sectional study included 143 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis at two hospitals in Tangerang, Indonesia. Participants were recruited through total sampling from September to November 2025. Self-motivation, family support, and treatment adherence were assessed using structured questionnaires. Associations were analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation test. Results: Low self-motivation was the largest category, reported by 53 participants (37.1%), and low family support was reported by 51 participants (35.7%). Regarding adherence, 53 participants (37.1%) were partially adherent and 48 (33.6%) were non-adherent. Self-motivation (ρ = 0.611, p < 0.001) and family support (ρ = 0.607, p < 0.001) each showed a strong positive correlation with hemodialysis adherence. Conclusion: Higher self-motivation and stronger family support were associated with greater adherence to hemodialysis therapy. Nursing strategies that strengthen patient engagement and involve family members may support adherence to long-term treatment.

Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a chronic health problem that requires continuous hemodialysis therapy. The success of hemodialysis therapy is strongly influenced by patient compliance with fluid intake restriction to prevent complications such as fluid overload and increased Interdialytic Weight Gain (IDWG). One important factor that plays a role in improving patient compliance is family support. Purpose: To determine the relationship between family support and compliance with fluid intake restriction among hemodialysis patients. Method: A quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach and a descriptive correlational method. The research sample consisted of 100 hemodialysis patients selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Family Support Scale (FSS) to measure family support and The Fluid Control in Hemodialysis Patients Scale (FCHPS) to measure compliance with fluid intake restriction. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Somers' d test. Results: Data indicated that most respondents had good family support (91%) and a high level of compliance with fluid intake restrictions (90%). Furthermore, bivariate analysis demonstrated a strong, positive, and significant relationship between family support and adherence to fluid intake restrictions among hemodialysis patients (p = 0.008, r = 0.631). Conclusion: A significant relationship between family support and compliance with fluid intake restriction in hemodialysis patients. Optimal family support plays an important role in improving patient compliance; therefore, nurses and healthcare professionals are expected to actively involve family members in education and management of hemodialysis patient care.

Abstract

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) program is an educational initiative designed to equip nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to continuously improve quality and patient safety within healthcare systems. Junior nurses, as frontline providers of nursing care, require adequate competencies in patient safety aspects. This study aims to identify and synthesize scientific findings regarding the effectiveness of the QSEN program in improving the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of junior nurses. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review following the PRISMA guidelines. Articles published between 2021 and 2026 were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The initial search identified 3,500 records. After removing 1,150 duplicates, 1,900 records were screened. A total of 1,600 records were excluded based on title and abstract. Of the remaining 300 articles, 120 could not be retrieved. Subsequently, 180 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility, and 158 were excluded due to not meeting inclusion criteria. Finally, 22 studies were included in the synthesis. The findings indicate that the implementation of the QSEN program has a positive impact on improving junior nurses’ knowledge of patient safety (60–85%), enhancing clinical skills (55–80%), and improving professional attitudes in nursing practice (70–90%). Several factors such as organizational support, effective leadership, clinical supervision, and continuous training play a crucial role in the successful implementation of the QSEN program. The QSEN program is effective in improving the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of junior nurses. The success of its implementation is strongly influenced by organizational support, leadership, and an adequate supervision system.

Abstract

Aging is a phase of life that is closely associated with physical, psychological, and social changes, which may increase vulnerability to stress among older adults. This study aimed to examine the relationship between social support and stress levels among elderly individuals living in social care institutions. A quantitative descriptive-analytic design with a cross-sectional approach was applied. The population consisted of 204 elderly residents, with 132 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Social support was measured using a questionnaire based on House’s theory, while stress levels were assessed using the DASS-Stress instrument. Data were analyzed using Somers’ d test. The results showed that most respondents had moderate social support and experienced severe stress. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between social support and stress levels (p = 0.008), although the strength of the correlation was weak. These findings indicate that social support is related to stress among the elderly, but it is not the sole determinant influencing psychological conditions. Other factors such as physical health, chronic illness, and individual coping capacity may play a more dominant role. Therefore, comprehensive and integrated interventions are needed to improve the psychological well-being and quality of life of elderly individuals in social care institutions..

Abstract

Depression is a common mental health issue among older adults, particularly those living in social care facilities due to limited social support, declining physical function, and reduced independence. These factors can adversely affect quality of life and increase the risk of physical and psychological complications. This study employed a cross-sectional design with 135 elderly respondents residing in Pucang Gading Social Care Home and Wening Wardoyo Home. A total sampling technique was used. Data were collected using demographic questionnaires, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), a chronic disease questionnaire, the Barthel Index, and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Data analysis included univariate, bivariate using Spearman’s test, and multivariate analysis using logistic regression. Most respondents were aged 60–74 years (63.0%) and female (63.0%). Spearman’s test indicated significant correlations between social support (p=0.000) and independence (p=0.000) with depression levels. Chronic diseases showed a significant but very weak relationship (p=0.034). Multivariate analysis identified social support as the most dominant factor associated with depression (p=0.002). Conclusion social support and independence are significantly associated with depression levels among older adults living in social care homes, with social support emerging as the most influential factor
