Abstract

The purpose of this research was to figure the benefits of research on termite nests for ecosystems and science. The method used in this study was a qualitative method with a literature review and empirical approach. Based on the results, the termite nest contains a biogenic product, namely C-organic produced by Schedorhinotheres spp. As a source of food and energy for microorganisms, termite nests also contain Actinomycetes containing bioactive compounds. B. germanus species nest structure and architecture in its nest-building strategy reduces the risk of predation. The architecture of the mound has a large effect on the temperature of the nest. Termite nests are also useful as a biomimicry approach to make various architecture inspiration, the most famous example is the Eastgate Center in Harare, in Zimbabwe.

Abstract

An important theme of science communication research is research on science article writers. However, not many scholars are interested in doing this research. Based on this fact, we conducted a research on the ideal position of a science article writer. It  turns out that he definition of science writer has changed in Indonesia. Quantitative content analysis of articles reported by The Conversation Indonesia during December 2021 found that the writerss motivated the public to understand and use scientific principles to meet their daily needs. The results of in-depth interviews with three prominent professors at Universitas Gadjah Mada confirm the same fact. They do not just tell the object of research in a certain context. This fact certainly needs to be imitated by other science writers. However, there is a basic recipe that must be practiced by other science writers. The practice of the recipe will make them autonomous and responsible to society. Thus, the article will explain the ways that can be taken to make it happen.

Abstract

The wave of science news related to climate change at the global level has become a trending topic of online media coverage during 2022. The purpose of this study is to determine the focus in elaborating science communication through the practice of science journalism in leading online media in the United States and the United Kingdom. The focus of the coverage moved to discuss more specific issues; the phenomenon of heat waves and global carbon. This research was conducted using a quantitative content analysis method. Data was collected through documentation of online media news content throughout 2022. The object of this research is science news articles on climate change issues in the online media The New York Times and The Guardian. The conceptual basis of this research is based on the opinion of Crystle M. Bruno (2020) who classifies the article into three parts; the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The study found that how information is delivered in online media in the UK and America shows similarities and differences. The root of the equation can be seen in the choice of long-form journalism format. Meanwhile, differences were identified in the variations in preparing the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. More importantly, the direction and development of journalism in America and Britain is moving towards the institutionalization of quality journalism.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of content commodification in digital media, especially in advertorial practices that appear on the online media of the Tribun Sumsel during the 2024 Palembang Mayor Election campaign. The primary focus of the study is how advertorials, which are supposed to be a transparent form of advertising, further blur the line between news and advertising, which risks undermining journalistic objectivity. This study uses qualitative descriptive methods through in-depth interviews and content analysis to explore the dynamics of implementing journalistic firewall boundaries between the newsroom and the business space in the media. The findings show that the media is increasingly prioritizing commercial and political interests by producing content that cannot be distinguished from news and advertorial. This practice has the potential to reduce the credibility of the media and obscure the function of the press as an agent of power supervision. This study shows the importance of maintaining the difference in quality of the content of news texts and editorial texts to avoid information ambiguity by improving the quality of journalistic work. Because journalistic firewalls do not only refer to technical restrictions by emphasizing advertorial columns with news alone, but also by differentiating the writing quality of both. Maintaining journalistic firewalls is essential to ensuring that the media remains an objective and independent source of information for the public.

Abstract

Communication media have under-gone profound transformations since the emergence of the Internet in the 1990s, the rise of social media in the 2000s, and the launch of YouTube in 2005. By the 2010s, digital media had become firmly established as the dominant mode of communication and content consumption (Han, 2024). Several critical shifts can be identified as a result of the rise of new media. First, the role of professional media institutions as “gatekeepers” has significantly diminished. Users themselves have increasingly become the new “gatekeepers” of information (Rianto, 2016). Second, the long-standing idea of the active audience found its most radical expression in the digital media era (Rianto, 2016), characterized by the principles of interactivity and participation inherent in user-generated content (Lister et al., 2009). This participatory turn has blurred the boundaries between professional and user-generated content (Yu et al., 2024).

Abstract

In this paper, the authors investigate argument activities of the journalism of The Conversation Indonesia (TCID). Taking into consideration five elements of argumentation —philosophical component, theoretical component, empirical component, analytical component, and practical component—this study identifying patterns argument that characterize of 41 science articles in 2021 by using qualitative content analysis. To complete the data, we conducted in-depth interviews with the chief of editor/content director of TCID. We also conducted an extensive review of current literature. This paper finds that most of the science articles reported by TCID uses 3 component arguments, namely the philosophical component, the empirical component, and the practical component. This shows that the authors only have a degree of wanting to form knowledge at a moderate level. Other data shows not all writers present predictive arguments in themselves. Only 80% of authors present predictive arguments. We argue that science journalism practiced by TCID is not passionate about building knowledge among its readers. It has not succeeded in promoting Indonesian science journalism as a means of forming readers' knowledge. Therefore, strong efforts are needed to ensure that science journalism can ground research results that shape readers' knowledge.
