Abstract

The 2020-launched MBKM programme, which was managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, included the Kampus Mengajar. Students gained a creative attitude, teamwork abilities, and work preparation through this programme, which benefited the neighbourhood. The purpose of this study was to analyze how students felt about the introduction of Kampus Mengajar. This study design is qualitative descriptive research, using qualitative methods like interviewing and documenting to gather data. The participants in Kampus Mengajar 4 served as the study's subjects. A virtualized interview guideline is the tool being used. The results of this investigation are as follows: 1) Students' opinions of the Kampus Mengajar programme, which focuses on literacy, numeracy, and technology adaptation, are favourable; they understand the program's ideas, goals, and method of implementation; and there has been an improvement in learning outcomes across all target schools, albeit to varying degrees. 2) The deficiencies found include the lack of socialisation to the target school, which makes it difficult for teachers to understand the program's concept, as well as the delay in allocating living expenses, the existence of nominal inconsistencies that students were informed of at the start of the programme, and the existence of inconsistencies in the university course conversion system.

Abstract

This study investigates the types of code-switching as categorized by Poplack and analyzes their functions in the context of online language teaching. Employing a qualitative approach, the study utilized classroom observations and teacher interviews to investigate the types and functions of code-switching. Five recorded online English lessons were analyzed to identify patterns of code-switching, and a semi-structured interview with the teacher provided insights into the rationale behind its use. Findings revealed that intra-sentential code-switching was the most frequently used, followed by inter-sentential and tag-switching. In addition to these patterns, the study also identifies their main functions. The primary functions of code-switching include facilitating curriculum access, managing the classroom, and fostering interpersonal connection. While these findings align with Alghasab’s framework, some instances fall outside these categories suggesting the presence of additional functions that require further investigation. These findings indicate that code-switching serves a broader range of pedagogical purposes in virtual classrooms, highlighting the need for further exploration.

Abstract

The grammar translation method (GTM) is an "ancient" method, and many say that its use is less effective in improving English language skills, especially speaking. However, nowadays, there is an English language certification test known as TOEFL ITP, which is widely used in the educational and professional world where the test does not contain a speaking ability test but rather a test related to the application of grammar called Structure and Written Expression questions. Because GTM was initially an effective method used to learn grammar, researchers tested whether GTM could also be effective in teaching Structure and Written Expression of TOEFL preparation material, which is a test intended for non-English speakers. The method used in this research was quasi-experimental, with two different treatments for each experimental and control class. The findings were analyzed using the paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test calculation methods, and the descriptive test results in each class were compared. The results showed that using GTM can effectively increase students' TOEFL scores in the Structure and Written Expression section, and this has a positive impact on teaching staff to apply the same method to EFL students who plan to take the English language test, namely TOEFL.

Abstract

Music serves as a universal medium for conveying moral values and social messages, exemplified by Maher Zain’s song “Palestine Will Be Free.” This study addresses the gap in analyzing the moral and figurative elements of the song, focusing on its contributions to moral education and social awareness. Utilizing a qualitative research design, the study examines the song’s lyrics and integrates insights from secondary sources to identify themes of justice, freedom, optimism, solidarity, and resilience. The analysis reveals that the song employs various figurative language techniques—such as metaphors, similes, and symbolism—to deliver its moral and emotional messages effectively. For example, the metaphor “Your soul will always be free” highlights the unyielding spirit of the Palestinian people despite oppression, while the recurring theme of solidarity fosters a sense of empathy and collective responsibility. The accompanying music video further amplifies the da'wah message, showcasing visuals of patience, faith, and hope in adversity. These findings affirm the song’s dual role as an artistic expression and a platform for moral advocacy, resonating with broader discussions on music’s potential to inspire ethical consciousness and social change. However, the study’s focus on lyrical and figurative analysis limits its scope, as it does not delve into the sociopolitical context or audience reception. Future research should explore these aspects, including cross-cultural interpretations and empirical studies on listener responses, to provide a deeper understanding of the song’s global impact.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of a short-term intensive English course designed to improve English Proficiency Test (EPT) scores among postgraduate students at Universitas Islam Kadiri (UNISKA) Kediri. EPT at UNISKA mirrors the TOEFL structure and functions as a critical requirement for postgraduate academic standards. However, many students struggle to meet the required scores due to limited time and lack of targeted instruction. Drawing on theories of motivation (Goal Setting Theory, Achievement Goal Theory, and Behavioral Goal Setting Theory) and Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, this research implements a five-session course focusing on listening, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension. The study uses a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design with 70 postgraduate participants. Findings show a significant improvement in students’ EPT scores after completing the course. The results highlight the potential of well-structured, short-term interventions in enhancing academic English proficiency in a time-efficient manner, particularly when tailored to learners' needs and supported by motivational strategies. This study offers practical insights for higher education institutions aiming to support postgraduate students in meeting English language proficiency standards.
