Abstract

Toothbrush contamination occurs immediately after use and increases when use is repeated. After the toothbrush is used, it should be washed and disinfected. Bay leaf (Eugenia polyantha Wight) can be an alternative herbal disinfectant because it contains tannin, flavonoids and essential oils that are antiseptic and antimicrobial. This study was an experimental laboratory to see the inhibitory content of bay leaf extract concentration of 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% on the growth of toothbrush bacteria colonies. Samples are bacterial colonies originating from 8 toothbrushes that have been used by 8 students in the mass toothbrush activity in SDN Harapan in the City of Bandung, with inclusion criteria aged 9-12 years and having a DMF-T index> 3. Repeat treatment for each concentration was 4 times. The results showed that bay leaf extract at concentrations of 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% could inhibit the growth of bacterial colonies, but when compared with the antibacterial effects produced by antibiotics Ciprofloxacin (5 µg), inhibitory content of bay leaf extract the five concentrations are relatively smaller. Colonies of contaminant bacteria that often appear on toothbrushes are Neisseria sp and Streptococcus sp, Klebsiella sp, Enterobacteriaceae sp (Coliform), and Staphylococcus aureus. Further research can be developed to find out other herbal ingredients that can be combined to increase disinfection, good dosage forms and the right contact time between disinfectant and toothbrushes.

Abstract

Health Teeth and mouth are very important for everyone, but there are still many people who still ignore it and think that dental and oral health are trivial things. This is related to the mother's knowledge about brushing teeth. This study aims to describe the mother's knowledge about brushing teeth in children aged 6-12 years in the dental polyclinic of Tanjungsari Public Health Center, Sumedang Regency. This research is descriptive quantitative with Questionnaire method. The research was carried out at the Dental Polyclinic of Tanjungsari Public Health Center, Sumedang Regency. The study was conducted on mothers who have children aged 6-12 years with a sample of 28 respondents who were determined using the slovin formula. Primary data obtained from the questionnaire will be presented in the form of a frequency distribution table with the results of the study showing knowledge about brushing teeth as a whole, namely 21.4% of respondents have good criteria, 46.4% have sufficient criteria, and 32.1% have poor criteria. Although almost most mothers who have children aged 6-12 years have sufficient knowledge of the criteria, there are still some who have less criteria. In order to achieve optimal dental and oral health, the knowledge of brushing teeth at the dental clinic at the Tanjungsari Public Health Center needs to be improved through various efforts, one of which is by providing counseling about brushing teeth.

Abstract

Dental and oral health is an inseparable part of body health, because it will affect the overall health of the body. Children with special needs, one of them is blind, who has a condition with impaired vision that requires assistance in maintaining personal hygiene, especially dental and oral hygiene. This study aims to determine the relationship between brushing habits and oral hygiene in blind people at SLB Citeureup, Cimahi City. This study uses an analytical survey method with a cross sectional design. The research was conducted at SLB Citeureup, Cimahi City. Blind population with a sample of 17 respondents who were determined using the Slovin formula. Data analysis in this study used the Kendall's Tau correlation test with hypothesis testing based on a significance level of <0.05 with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that there was a relationship between brushing habits and oral and dental hygiene in the visually impaired, this was indicated by a p value of 0.018. It can be concluded that the hypothesis which states that there is a relationship between brushing habits and oral hygiene in blind children can be accepted because basically the intelligence abilities of blind children are the same as normal children, but if the ability to brush teeth of blind children does not eat well, it affects oral hygiene.

The high prevalence of gingivitis in Indonesia is due to the fact that people have not implemented good and effective habits in brushing their teeth. This study aims to determine the habit of brushing teeth, the frequency of students experiencing gingivitis and the relationship between brushing teeth and gingivitis. This research was conducted on fifth grade students at Kalanganyar 1 Elementary School in Labuan – Pandeglang District, Banten. In April-May 2022. This research uses cross sectional and quantitative analytical methods with a sample of 47 respondents. The results showed that 39 respondents (83%) had poor criteria for brushing their teeth, 32 respondents (68.1%) had gingivitis and there was a relationship between brushing habits and the incidence of gingivitis based on the Fisher Exact, namely (P - value = 0.009 < 0.05). The conclusion of the relationship brushing habits in class v children with gingivitis in elementary school Kalanganyar 1 Labuan district in 2022, is that there is a relationship between the habit of brushing teeth and the incidence of gingivitis.
