Abstract

Abstract

Freshwater lobster is a fishery commodity that has many advantages so that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has made Freshwater lobster a mainstay aquaculture commodity. As a result, the demand for Freshwater lobster seeds is increasing, while naturally Freshwater lobster only spawns 2 times per year. One of the efforts to improve the reproductive performance of Freshwater lobster is the selection of the appropriate maturation stimulation method. So it is necessary to investigate several methods of stimulating Freshwater lobster broodstock maturation that can improve reproductive performance, namely fecundity and egg diameter of Freshwater lobster. The design used in this study was a completely randomized design, with 4 treatments and 3 repetitions. The treatments in this study were P1 (control), P2 (eyestalk ablation), P3 (addition of vitamin E to feed), and P4 (hormone injection). Based on the results of the study, the treatment of different maturation stimulation methods gave no significant effect (P>0.05) on fecundity and egg diameter, but was significantly different from the control treatment. So it can be concluded that different maturation methods can only accelerate maturation in Freshwater lobster broodstock compared to control treatments.

Abstract

The availability of of milk fish fries has been becoming the inbitor in supporting milk fish production. Herbal ingredients such as papaya leaf’s extract can be an alternative to improve the success rate of hatchings and reduce fry abnormalities. The research aimed to examine the effectivity of papaya leaf’s extract in increasing hatching rate, and reducing the rate of abnormalities in milkfish fries. The treatment consists of six level concentration of papaya leaf’s extract which includes 2, 4, 6, 10, 20 and 25 ml. The research resulted in the highest success rate and the lowest abnormalities occur to the tratment with 4 ml papaya leaf’s extract (89, 94±1, 61 % dan 6, 54±2, 47 %). Therefore, papaya leaf extraction can significantly help to improve the success rate and minimize milk fish fries abnormality. Keyword: milkfish, papaya leaf’s extract, hatching rates, abnormalities.

Abstract

Embryonic development of Asian seabass, Lates calcarifer is a critical phase in the success of larval rearing production in a hatchery. Low production of larvae has been the drawback of the Asian seabass aquaculture owing to diseases and microbial infection to the eggs, causing low egg viability. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different doses of papaya leaf extracts during embryonic development to improve egg hatchability and larval survival. Six different doses of papaya leaf extracts of 2, 4, 6, 10, 20, and 25 mL were used as treatments arranged triplicates in five liter aquaria. The newly fertilized eggs (99 eggs) were immersed in each treatment for five minutes and fifteen seconds. Subsequently, the eggs were moved into 10 L incubation tanks, and samples were collected for embryogenesis observation. The hatchability of eggs was significantly different among treatments. The hatchability of larvae in group with dose of 4 mL was the best treatment (93.94 ± 0.1%) followed by 2 mL (93.88 ± 3%), and 6 mL (90.91 ± 3.0%). The different doses of papaya leaf extract significantly affected larval survival. The highest survival rate of larvae was 2 mL (93%) followed by 4 mL (90%) and 6 mL (70%). There was no significant difference in the hatching time of larvae. The fastest hatching time occurred at the dose of 6 mL about 13 hours and 30 minutes, followed by 2 mL and 4 mL treatment for about 14 hours. This study recommends that the doses of 2 mL or 4 mL of papaya leaf extracts have potential impacts on the improvement of larval rearing production for Asian seabass hatchery.

Abstract

The grey-eel catfish is a highly valued fish species in some parts of Indonesia. The fish is common in brackish water of estuaries, marine and freshwater habitat. They are not are not usually catched in commercial scale because of the limited population in its habitat. Although the status is not evaluated, the fish is predicted facing extinction in several countries. We conducted a study to examine the biological information and reproductive biology of the fish in Kota Langsa to gather information that can be utilize to evaluate reproductive status of the fish in several habitats. Parameters tested in the study includes sex ratio, length-weight relationships, candition factor, size at first maturity fecundity and reproductive potential of the fish. Research results provide information that the fish follows negative allometric model with constant condition factor throughout the study. The catches were relatively young fish which have not reached maturity stage. Fishes in the class sized at 510-550 mm provide the largest contribution to total eggs production. To ensure sustainability of the fish it is advised that the fish must catched at size larger than 550 mm.

Abstract

One of the freshwater commodities that is thought to have the potential to sell well on the world market in the future is freshwater lobster. This animal is a nocturnal animal commodity (animal that is active at night). This animal is thought to have the potential to sell well on the world market due to the high price and market demand which has not yet been met. Therefore, research efforts are needed on freshwater lobster seeds, to increase growth and survival. One of them is the use of alkalinity and photoperiod. The research design carried out was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). consisting of 4 treatments with 3 repetitions. During the 40 day rearing period, pellets are given. Research shows that there are significant differences between each photoperiod in the growth of absolute weight, absolute length, molting percentage, daily growth rate and survival of freshwater crayfish. Treatments with different photoperiod times showed that the best results were obtained in treatment P2 with photoperiod time (16G:8T) and the lowest in treatment 3 (21G:3T). Based on research results, it is recommended that the use of photoperiod (16G:8T) is effective for increasing the growth and survival of freshwater lobsters. The results of this research can be used as information regarding the most effective photoperiod for freshwater lobsters
