Abstract

Abstract: Malay story “Yong Dollah” is one of cultural heritage in the form of oral literature in Bengkalis. This story has been very popular and often been told to children, teenagers or even adults in certain occasion like at night or free time. It has been told throughout generations in the life of Malay people in Bengkalis. Yong Dollah is a character created by a man named Abdullah bin Endong, Bengkalis Malay artist. In his entire life, he liked to tell stories that mostly came from his imagination to entertain people. The contents of his stories were often related to his daily life, adventure and often contained certain moral value for audience. The popularity of the stories could be used as learning resource text and media to teach English for senior high school students. However, English version of these stories had never been made before. The exploration and translation of the original stories into English were done to meet the need of learning. Method of translating used in this study was adaptation where intercultural differences between original text from source language (Bahasa Melayu) and target language (English) were adjusted to convey the original meaning from the content of the language. Results of the translation were set of translated stories of Yong Dollah. These Stories can be used by teacher in teaching English for senior high school students. In addition, this study could also be used as alternative entertainment and could help to preserve cultural heritage of malay people. Keywords: Local Stories, translation, materials,

Abstract

Based on the problems found in the classroom, the students at State Polytechnic of Bengkalis had problems in comprehending business texts. It seemed difficult for them to understand contents and to identify the inference of the text. They also had limited vocabulary. Therefore, the researcher decided to solve these problems by applying Reciprocal Teaching. The researchaimedat finding out to what extent Reciprocal Teaching could improve the students’ reading comprehension of business texts. This reciprocal teaching applicationresearch was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four meetings; three meetings for teaching reading comprehension of business texts and one meeting was for the test. Participants of the research were 25 students of Business Administration major. There were some instruments used asdata collection were (1) observation sheets; students, teacher, and teaching steps (2) field notes (3) and reading comprehension tests.The research findings showed that Reciprocal Teaching could improve the students’ reading comprehension of business texts. It could be seen from the improvement of the students’ score in reading comprehension of Business texts test. The average score of students in cycle 1 was 63,36 and in cycle 2 was 67,68. In conclusion, the implementation of Reciprocal Teaching could improve the students’ reading comprehension of Business texts at Business administration Students of State Polytechnic of Bengkalis. It improved both students’ score in reading tests and their interest in reading activities.

Abstract

Abstract : Learning English is very important in this competitive world. It shows that we have to master English. However, in learning it, the learners still feel bored and face difficulties. For example, in learning Vocabulary, they always have problems in memorizing the words. Therefore, the use of learning media can be more effective and interesting way in learning. The main purpose of this final project is to make a matching game book which can be used as an alternative learning medium in learning Vocabulary, especially, for students in lower education level. The idea of this project is based on the real concept, the students actually still feel bored in learning English. This project results a set of matching game book consists of a game book, a sets of picture cards and a set of word cards. This game can be used in classes during learning-teaching process to help the students to memorize the word. By using this game, the student can learn vocabulary in a more interesting and effective way.Keywords: Matching Game Book, picture cards, word cards.

Abstract

Reading comprehension of business texts is necessary for students. However, many students, especially D3- Business Administration department of state polytechnic of Bengkalis faced dificulties in comprehending the business texts. Therefore, TELLS Strategy was proposed. TELLS strategy is a strategy which stands for Study the title; Examine for clues; Look for Important words; Look for hard words, and identify the setting. This article aimed at finding out to what extent the strategy to improve the students reading comprehension of business text and the factors that influence the changes. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. The result found that the students’ score in reading comprehension of business texts test increased. The average score of students in cycle 1 was 64 and in cycle 2 was 70. Then, the factors that influence the improvement of students’ reading comprehension of business texts were interesting teaching material, teacher’s role, and students’ willingness to do all procedures of the strategy. In conclusion, the implementation of TELLS strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension of business texts majoring Business Administration improved both students’ score in reading tests and their interest in reading activities.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to investigate crews’ perceptions of Maritime English Usage at RORO Bengkalis. This research was quantitative and qualitative research. The population in this study was crews at Roro Bengkalis. A set of questionnaire was distributed to 28 crews regarding their perceptions on oral communication usage during their voyage and a face to face interview was carried out to 6 crews. In this research, measurement of these statements using the Likert scale ranging from 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Undecided, 4 = Agree and 5 = Strongly Agree. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS 22 to know the normality, validity, and reliability of the instrument. The results of this study showed that crews had positive perceptions on English for Maritime usage during their voyage

Abstract

Based on the problem found in the classroom, mastering English vocabulary is one of the weekness for the student. It seemed difficult for them to understand some words which are unfamiliar with them or even memorizing them. The use of learning media can be more effective and interesting way in learning.Therefore the researcher decided to solve these problems by applying a matching game which can be used as an alternative learning medium in learning Vocabulary. The participanst of this research were 20 Students of English Depatment. Tihis game was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four meetings; three meetings for teaching the vocabulary by using this media, and one of them was for the test. The research findings showed that matching game could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. It could be seen from the improvement of the students score in test. The average score of students in cycle 1 was 63 and in cycle 2 was 66. In conclusion, the implementation of matching game could improve the students’ Vocabulary mastery at first year Students of English Department at State Polytechnic of Bengkalis.

Abstract

Mastering grammar is important in learning English. In grammar, the words pattern and tenses should be considered as main focus for the discussion. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the ability of the students in completing sentences with correct gerund and to infinitive verb forms . This research was  a descriptive research. This study showed that the level of the students ability was at mediocre level. It was at 53. The error commonly occured slighly the same in completing both gerund and to infinitive verb forms. The average score of gerund was 52 and 54 points for to infinitive.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the errors committed by students in using punctuation, capitalization and spelling in writing business letter. This is descriptive study. The sample of this study was the students of English for Professional Business and Communication Program Academic Year 2021/2022. The finding of the research showed that the common errors committed by students in writing business letter from the highest to the lowest occurrence were spelling, punctuation and capitalization. The errors occur because of omission, addition, misformation and misordering.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The strawberry generation is the generation that was born after 2002. In that year, generally the generation is fragile, like a soft and easily crushed strawberry, which requires special specialization and treatment in the teaching and learning process in the English for business and professional communication (bispro) study program. The urgency of this research is to find out student feedback about perceptions and satisfaction with learning that has been carried out in the bispro study program at bengkalis state polytechnic towards educators to improve the quality provided. The methodology of this research is quantitative with 50 respondents who are categorized as a strawberry generation. The results of this study found that perception affected student satisfaction of 0.445. This can be interpreted as still low, so there needs to be an increase in the quality of lecturers and other support.

Abstract

In the era of industry 4.0, most of human’s activities cannot be separated from digitalization. The digitalization has collaborated with the educational institution. The Language Centre of Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis usually holds a TOEIC test (online and offline) to fulfill the industrial world in preparing qualified alumni. The TOEIC instructor or lecturer used a TOEIC application while teaching in TOEIC intensive class where it is a preparation class for the students. This study investigated the problem faced by the students during listening through application which is called TOEIC Test Prep in learning TOEIC materials in the TOEIC intensive class and also investigated the challenges faced by them during the use of application. The participants of the study were 43 non-English majoring students (the fifth semester) of State Polytechnique of Bengkalis.  The study used questionnaires to collect the data and the data were analyzed based on three categories; students’ background, the general difficulties on TOEIC listening, the challenges during listening through the use of TOEIC Test Prep application. The result of the study showed that the non-English majoring students in Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis felt the application had helped them in listening practice. Key words: TOEIC, TOEIC Test Prep Application, Listening Comprehension
