Abstract

Students’ reading comprehension quality is highly influenced by some salient features such as method of instruction, media/technology used, class size, students’ prior ability, teaching materials, etc. This experimental study explores the influence of technology in teaching reading through the use of computer screen as opposed to conventional mean, i.e., the use of textbook in teaching reading comprehension for TOEFL test. While some argues that paper-based reading text is still relevant today, the use of technology like screen-based text is believed to help students to understand and comprehend reading text better due to some important reasons. The design of the study is experimental research which includes 117 students from some departments in Riau University. There are two groups of students involved in this study namely control (54 students) and experimental (63 students) group which receive different treatment in the process of teaching and learning within 7 meetings. Based on the result of the study, the students’ reading comprehension score in TOEFL after they were given the treatment shows that 36.320 mean score for the control group and 40.310 mean score for the experimental group. The value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.001 and it is smaller than the value of Alpha 0.05. Thus, it implies that H0 is rejected, and Ha is accepted. In other words, it can be said that there is a significance difference between students’ reading comprehension in experimental and control groups. Based on the statistical analysis of the data, it is found that students who are treated with screen-based text have better reading comprehension than those who used paper-based text. It can be concluded that screen-based text is effective enough to improve students’ reading comprehension in TOEFL prediction test.

Abstract

In the era of industry 4.0, most of human’s activities cannot be separated from digitalization. The digitalization has collaborated with the educational institution. The Language Centre of Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis usually holds a TOEIC test (online and offline) to fulfill the industrial world in preparing qualified alumni. The TOEIC instructor or lecturer used a TOEIC application while teaching in TOEIC intensive class where it is a preparation class for the students. This study investigated the problem faced by the students during listening through application which is called TOEIC Test Prep in learning TOEIC materials in the TOEIC intensive class and also investigated the challenges faced by them during the use of application. The participants of the study were 43 non-English majoring students (the fifth semester) of State Polytechnique of Bengkalis.  The study used questionnaires to collect the data and the data were analyzed based on three categories; students’ background, the general difficulties on TOEIC listening, the challenges during listening through the use of TOEIC Test Prep application. The result of the study showed that the non-English majoring students in Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis felt the application had helped them in listening practice. Key words: TOEIC, TOEIC Test Prep Application, Listening Comprehension

Abstract

Despite nationwide challenges in English language acquisition, students in geographically isolated regions like Bengkalis Island, Indonesia, face unique obstacles. Drawing upon the theoretical framework that posits the unique challenges of English teaching and learning in rural areas, this qualitative study delves into the specific challenges encountered by first-year students (n=537) at Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis, all of whom completed high school on the island. Through semi-structured interviews, the study explores these challenges and reveals common struggles with grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, similar to urban students. However, the influence of teacher competence and mother tongue interference emerge as potentially distinct challenges in this rural context. Understanding these unique obstacles can inform targeted interventions to enhance English language learning outcomes for students in isolated regions of Indonesia.

Abstract

Limited internet access in remote areas remains a major obstacle to equitable digital education in Indonesia. This situation significantly impacts student and teacher accessibility to digital learning resources, which are increasingly becoming a necessity in 21st-century learning. One way to address this obstacle is to provide alternative technology infrastructure that does not rely on external internet connections. This study aims to implement and evaluate a local server system without a quota at SMKN 1 Bantan as a solution for providing educational materials in environments with limited network coverage. The local server system is designed to store various learning content, including text, video, and interactive modules, which can then be accessed through the school's internal network. This mechanism allows students and teachers to access materials more quickly and stably, free from quota limitations and dependence on commercial internet networks, which are often slow or unavailable. The implementation results indicate that the local server is able to improve the accessibility and speed of distribution of learning materials. Teachers can easily upload teaching materials, while students can access them anytime through devices connected to the school network. Surveys conducted with students and teachers also indicate a high level of satisfaction with this system. They assessed that local servers facilitated the teaching and learning process, supported student independence, and reduced technical barriers that often arose due to weak internet connections. Furthermore, this study emphasized the importance of utilizing appropriate technology in educational settings in remote areas. Implementing local servers without quotas proved to be a relatively inexpensive, easy-to-manage, and sustainable solution to support equitable digital education.

Abstract

English proficiency is a crucial competence for vocational higher education students, particularly in engineering fields where access to technical information and global communication increasingly relies on English. However, many first-semester students enter polytechnic institutions with limited basic English skills. This study aimed to describe the basic English proficiency of first-semester Mechanical Engineering students at Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis. A descriptive quantitative research design was employed, involving 131 students from five classes selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a basic English proficiency test focusing on fundamental grammar, simple sentence construction, and general vocabulary. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean scores, score distribution, and proficiency levels. The findings revealed that students’ overall English proficiency was low to moderate, with a mean score of 60.57. More than half of the participants were classified into very low and low proficiency categories, indicating insufficient mastery of foundational English skills. The results also showed considerable variation in students’ performance, reflecting diverse educational backgrounds and unequal English exposure prior to entering higher education.
