Abstract

Menglongshi (hanzi: 朦胧诗) or ‘misty poetry’ (also translated as ‘obscure poetry’) is one kind of Chinese poems created by young poets who experienced the Cultural Revolution in 1970s. The emergence of a new style of poetry which is different from the previous styles marked a new era of poetry writing in China. Its uniqueness lies in wordplay, metaphor, synesthesia, and symbols whose meanings cannot be easily identified. The misty poem also drew the cautious attention of the Chinese government, because the symbols and sequence of sentences were suspected to contain thoughts which are considered not in accordance with the government’s policies. Bei Dao and Gu Cheng were known as two of the most important misty poets. This paper analyzes two poems by Bei Dao and two poems by Gu Cheng in terms of their intrinsic elements, such as imagery and language style in order to interpret their meaning. Furthermore, in order to provide more supporting evidence, this research also analyzes the poems’ extrinsic elements to identify their respective meanings in a more comprehensive way. Therefore, the explanation for the occurrence of Cultural Revolution is a very important finding in this research. This study sought to explain the important role of misty poems in explaining the Cultural Revolution by examining Bei Dao and Gu Cheng’s works.

Abstract

Abstract

Film New Gods: Ne Zha Reborn (Xīnshén bǎng: Nǎ zhā chóngshēng新神榜:哪吒重生) adalah film animasi fantasi yang dirilis pada 12 Februari 2021, disutradarai Zhao Ji (赵霁). Ne Zha adalah salah satu dewa dalam mitologi Cina yang ceritanya terdapat dalam novel zaman Dinasti Ming (1368-1644) berjudul Investiture of The Gods (Fēng shén yǎnyì封神演義).

Abstract

Timor-Leste is the youngest country in the world with unique religious dynamics. The Catholic population increased rapidly after independence, while the Muslim population decreased drastically due to political dynamics. The presence of Mari Alkatiri, an Arab-descended Timorese Muslim who became Prime Minister (PM) twice, is a depiction of the presence of Islam in a Catholic-majority country. The long history of colonialism in Timor-Leste has greatly influenced the landscape of religious life there. In its development, the people of Timor-Leste live harmoniously and democratically. This journal uses a qualitative research method that focuses on the social and cultural phenomena of the religious life of the people of Timor-Leste. The approach is historical and narrative about the history of the entry of religion, the role of political and religious figures, and changes in the demographics of the population that are influenced by the domestic political landscape. The method used is a literature study with historical documentation. The theory used by the author is the Multiculturalism Theory by Bikhu Parekh, because it discusses the existence of an Islamic minority in the midst of a Catholic majority. Also, how a Muslim figure can have a big role in the political arena of this Catholic-majority country. From this study, several conclusions were found, including that the Muslim population decreased drastically after East Timor's independence from Indonesia due to the development of the political situation there. Islam, which is now a minority, was actually the first religion to enter there, brought by the Hadramaut Arabs. Catholicism then spread massively through Portuguese colonialism.

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of domestic violence against women in the Thai drama Tie Me (K)not (2022) using Johan Galtung’s theory of violence, which categorizes violence into direct, structural, and cultural forms. Through qualitative content analysis, the research identifies how the drama depicts these forms of violence, reflecting broader societal issues in Thailand. The findings reveal explicit instances of direct violence, such as physical and psychological abuse, systemic structural violence through institutional failures in justice and support systems, and cultural violence rooted in patriarchal traditions that justify gender inequality. The drama not only highlights these oppressive dynamics but also challenges them through the protagonist’s journey toward empowerment. By analyzing these representations, the study underscores the role of media in raising awareness about domestic violence and advocates for societal and policy changes to address gender-based violence in Thailand. This research contributes to discussions on media, gender studies, and violence prevention, emphasizing the need for cultural and structural reforms to protect women’s rights.
