Abstract

The brief narrative of Ham seeing Noah’s nakedness (Gen 9:20-27) has been interpreted by some as a text that can be used against homosexuality. This interpretation is unsurprising given the numerous exegetical traditions that characterize Ham’s action as sexual perversion, informed by a theory of voyeurism that frames Ham looking upon Noah’s nakedness with lustful desire. For such interpreters, this reading of Genesis 9:20-27 offers biblical grounds for rejecting homosexual behavior. The primary purpose of this article is to challenge the use of the Ham-Noah narrative as basis for teaching against homosexuality. This article is not necessarily written to support homosexuality but rather to examine the textual evidence through critical analysis of the term רָאָה (“to see/look”). In Genesis 34:2 and 38:15, this term is found within explicitly sexual contexts that begin with the act of looking. The textual analysis reveals significant differences between Genesis 34:2 and 38:15 and the text of Genesis 9:22 regarding רָאָה. In 34:2 and 38:15, sexual behavior is clearly recorded following the act of seeing, providing strong evidence that the uses of רָאָה in those contexts imply sexual desire. However, unlike those passages, 9:22 records no sexual behavior following the act of seeing. Therefore, it is incorrect to assert that Ham viewed Noah with sexual desire. This finding ultimately refutes the use of the Ham-Noah narrative as a basis for teaching against homosexuality.

Abstract

The book of Nahum is full of the news of God’s judgment upon Nineveh; this book looks gloomy and hopeless, but one will find the theme of restoration as well. This article analyzes Nahum 1:12-2:2 as a basis for addressing the problem of religious discrimination in Indonesia.  Using the literature study method, the results from this article are divided into theological and practical implications. Theologically, the text of Nahum 1:12-2:2 provides believers with hope for restoration from the One who brings true restoration: God himself. Practically, this text encourages God's people to remain steadfast and not despair but have hope, for there will come a time when God restores them. In addition, when true restoration occurs, believers should return to God and not continue to indulge themselves in pleasure and self-satisfaction.

Abstract

In this article, the authors analyze the choice of the word "grant" in 1 John 5:14-15 as the translation of the word ἀκούει. The authors argue that the word "grant" is a poor translation choice because it has nothing to do with granting prayer. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the authors identify several arguments that require the use of the word "grant" in Terjemahan Baru to be reviewed. Specifically, the authors argue that the use of the word "grant" in 1 John 5:14-15 can mislead readers into understanding God as a God who will definitely grant prayers.

Abstract

Abstract

Several scholars argue that the dialogue between God and Satan in the prologue of the Book of Job can be omitted without consequence, suggesting that the narrative of suffering remains coherent even without this conversation. However, this article contends that this dialogue possesses crucial theological and narrative functions. Using a qualitative approach with textual analysis methods, this research comprises four integrated stages: (1) lexical analysis of Hebrew text to identify key terms such as tam, ?inn?m, and 'avdi; (2) narrative-ironic analysis that integrates the function of frame narrative and dramatic irony; (3) intertextual analysis connecting the dialogue with the tradition of the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 40–55) and Christ's suffering; and (4) synthesis of all four analyses. The findings demonstrate that the God-Satan dialogue creates essential dramatic irony that provides divine perspective to readers, builds the theme of "suffering without cause" (?inn?m), establishes Job's status as "my servant" ('avdi), and forms typological patterns linking Job to Christ. This dialogue is not a dispensable narrative element but a hermeneutical foundation that opens understanding of the irony of righteous suffering and the Christological typology in the Book of Job.
