Abstract

This study aimed at finding and analyzing the information of the ideal speaking and listening online assessment media needed in Computer Science Faculty, University of Putra Indonesia YPTK. The study used descriptive and qualitative approaches. The data instrument was a questionnaire using Likert-scale and open-questions responded by 431 students and 17 English lecturers. The result of the study showed that the students need interactive and interesting assessment web responsive while the lecturers need web responsive media which enable them to assess speaking and listening online including scoring and sending feedback. The result of the study will also be used as a matrix for developing online assessment media.

Abstract

Sebagian besar mahasiswa masih memandang bahasa Inggris sangat sulit untuk dipelajari. Selain itu mahasiswa tidak percaya diri dan takut melakukan kesalahan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisis kemampuan siswa berbicara bahasa Inggris setelah menggunakan metode dubbing dan media video pembelajaran. Model penelitian eksperimen yang digunakan adalah one group of pre-test and post-test eksperimental design. Metode pengumpulan data eksperimen terdiri dari observasi, wawancara, dan perekaman. Analisis data melalui pengelompokan dan perbandingan berdasarkan kategori; kategori tidak puas (AS), kategori cukup (F), kategori baik (G), kategori sangat baik (V), dan kategori sangat baik (E). Hasil penelitian berdasarkan pre-test masuk dalam kategori US = 7 siswa, F = 21 siswa, G = 13 siswa, VG = 3 siswa dan E = 0, tidak ditemukan hasil dan post test hasil belajar siswa US = 0, tidak ditemukan hasil, F = 6 siswa, G = 20 siswa, VG = 17 siswa dan E = 1 siswa. Kemudian efek positif dari penggunaan metode dubbing hasil adalah kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris meningkat lebih tinggi, mengacu pada hasil pre-test kategori kemampuan siswa ditemukan dalam kategori US dan tidak ditemukan kategori yang sama pada hasil post-test, siswa ' kategori kemampuan tidak ada hasil yang ditemukan dalam kategori E dan kategori AS. Jadi metode dubbing bekerja secara efektif dalam proses pengajaran untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the style of language in the closing statement of NajwaShihab on the talk show "Mata Najwa" in Trans 7. This type of research is a qualitative research using a descriptive approach. The data of this research is in the form of NajwaShihab's speech in the closing statement in the talk show "Mata Najwa" which contains language style. The data source for this research is the video recording of Mata Najwa's talk show on Trans 7 March - April 2020 edition. The video was taken on the Narasi Newsroom Youtube Channel. The methods and techniques used at the stage of providing the data are the listening method with tapping techniques and advanced listening techniques, free involvement, conversation and notes. At the stage of data analysis, the method used is the matching method with the technique of sorting the determining elements, while at the stage of presenting the results of data analysis, the method is used the informal method. The language styles found in NajwaShihab's closing statement on the talk show "Mata Najwa" in Trans 7 are hyperbole, personification, metaphor, synecdoche (totem pro parte), association, euphemism, anaphora, epanolepsis, epizeuksis, cynicism, innuendo, sarcasm, paradox, antithesis, and repetition. Repetition is the most dominant language style found in this research (in all data). The repetition in question is in the form of repeating phonemes at the end of the sentence (having a rhyme/rhyme "aa"). Each row in the data has a pair, namely odd and even rows (eg rows 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and so on).

Abstract

The students usually make error on the use of grammar when they produce an English writing, also in writing descriptive text. It is due to the difference between Indonesia and English grammatical system. If the students are not able to use those aspects correctly, it would be worried that their writing which is good content and organization would not give good sense because the readers misunderstand the message conveyed. The purpose of this study was to describe types of grammar errors made by the third year students in paragraph writing. The population of this research was 68 students of the third year students of English State Islamic University Imam Bonjol Padang, which were divided into two classes: class A and B. The sample was 30 students by using cluster random sampling. This research was done by giving some topics and students had to choose one of the topics given such as “My Daily Activities”, “My Favorite Lecturer”, and “My Best Friend in this Semester”. The researcher uses qualitative method in order to obtain valid findings from 30 students of third year students of English. Based on the error analysis conducted, the researcher found that errors regarding sentence structure are the most dominant errors, with the biggest number of errors are in verb and verb groups with the biggest number of errors are in addition verb (64,10%). Then, it is followed by errors regarding nominal with the biggest number of errors are in inappropriate addition of nominal (35,90%). Last, the errors regarding pronoun with the biggest number of errors are in inappropriate selection pronoun (24,59%). The findings show that the students have difficulties in using correct sentence structure, especially in omission verb. This problem may occur due to their lack understanding of grammatical rules.

Abstract

Pengembangan suatu kawasan wisata harus didukung oleh fasilitas dan kualitas pengetahuan Sumber Daya Manusia yang ada di kawasan tersebut; Yaitu kemampuan dan keterampilan komunikasi serta pemahaman aturan main dengan wisatawan asing. Bukit Matoa. Bukit Matoa merupakan salah satu destinasi yang diperhitungkan dalam menunjang kawasan wisata di Padang.. Tujuan dari kegiatan PKM ini adalah untuk membantu POKDARWIS Bukit Matoa di Kecamatan Padang Selatan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi Bahasa Inggris mereka khususnya penggunaan Direction. Banyak anggota POKDARWIS yang tidak memiliki kemampuan Bahasa Inggris memadai sebagai pemandu wisata Bukit Matoa. Metode yang digunakan untuk memecahkan masalah tersebut adalah melalui pelatihan atau kursus menggunakan Bahasa Inggris praktis, yakni berlatih keterampilan menggunakan bahasa Inggris dalam penggunaan Direction. Hasil dari pelaksanaan PKM tersebut menunjukkan bahwa kompetensi komunikatif anggota POKDARWIS dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris praktis meningkat.

Abstract

Pokdarwis Bukit Matoa is a Tourism Awareness Group in the Bukit Matoa area. An area that is currently being proposed as a tourist village in West Sumatra. To be able to advance a tourist village, Pokdarwis members and the local community should have good English competence, especially for foreign tourists. Based on the analysis results, the team of community service from UPI YPTK Padang found that most members of the Pokdarwis Bukit Matoa who consist of housewives could not communicate in English. Therefore, the Team provides tourism English literacy training, especially for Bukit Matoa area. In addition, the team has also made Bukit Matoa Tourism English module that can be used by Pokdarwis members during the training and afterward. From the results of perception questionnaires given to 31 Pokdarwis members participated in the training, they stated that the training was very useful, fun and could improve their English skills so that they became confident to welcome foreign tourists in the Bukit Matoa tourist village. Pokdarwis Bukit Matoa adalah Kelompok Sadar Wisata di Kawasan Bukit Matoa. Sebuah daerah  yang saat ini sedang diusulkan menjadi salah satu kampung wisata di Sumatera Barat. Untuk dapat menjadi memajukan sebuah kampung wisata,  anggota Pokdarwis dan masyarakat setempat hendaknya memiliki kompetensi Bahasa Inggris yang baik, khususnya bagi wisatawan asing. Dari hasil analisa di lapangan, Tim PKM dari UPI YPTK Padang menemukan bahwa sebagian besar angota Pokdarwis Bukit Matoa yang terdiri dari Ibu Rumah Tangga belum dapat berkomunikasi dengan Bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu Tim PKM memberikan pelatihan literasi Bahasa Inggris pariwisata khususnya untuk digunakan di kawasan Bukit Matoa. Selain itu, tim PKM juga sudah membuat modul Bahasa Inggris Pariwisata Bukit Matoa yang dapat digunakan anggota Pokdarwis selama pelatihan dan sesudahnya. Dari hasil angket persepsi yang diberikan kepada 31 orang anggota Pokdarwis yang ikut pelatihan menyatakan bahwa pelatihan ini sangat bermanfaat, menyenangkan dan dapat meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris mereka sehingga mereka menjadi percaya diri dalam menyambut wisatawan asing di kampung Wisata Bukit Matoa.

Abstract

Kegiatan ini diusulkan dengan pertimbangan bahwa pada umumnya siswa pemula cenderung menyukai kegiatan belajar dengan tindakan dan gerakan yang berbeda. Masalah lainnya yang ditemui ialah siswa biasanya mudah bosan dengan aktifitas pemebelajaran setelah10 menit dan menyebabkan rentang perhatian pendek dan kurangnya daya ingat. Berdasarkan permasalahan diatas, maka tim pengabdianmasyarakat ingin memotivasi siswa untuk belajar bahasa Inggris dengan metode yang menarik dan tentunya disukai oleh siswa yaitu Spelling Bee. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan sebagai umpan balik dari tindakan analisis kebutuhan yang telah dilakukan oleh tim pengabdi terhadap siswa MTSN 7 kota Padang. Diharapkan setelah kegiatan ini terlaksana, siswa mampu mengetahui bakat dan minat belajar di sekolahakan kebutuhan bahasa Inggris yang mana bisa diaplikasikan dalam kegiatan sehari-hari.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesalahan tata bahasa yang ditemukan dalam naskah percakapan siswa. Studi ini menekankan pentingnya tata bahasa dalam memfasilitasi percakapan yang akurat dan bermakna. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode campuran kualitatif-kuantitatif untuk mengelaborasi persentase numerik dan mendeskripsi kesalahan pada grammar. Data diambil dari kertas ujian siswa dan dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan teknik random purposive sampling. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif. Ada 30 siswa yang berpartisipasi. Penelitian ini menemukan ada 87 kesalahan tata bahasa yang ditemukan dalam naskah percakapan siswa yang dipisahkan menjadi kesalahan urutan kata (24,14%), kesalahan penggunaan kata ganti (12,64%), kesalahan penggunaan kata benda (4,60%), kesalahan penggunaan artikel ( 8,05%), kesalahan verb tense (42,53%), penyalahgunaan kata depan (3,45%), penyalahgunaan pasif (3,45%), dan kesalahan penggunaan kata tanya (1,15%). Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kesalahan tata bahasa paling banyak ditemukan pada kesalahan penggunaan kata kerja dan urutan kata.

Abstract

This research developed an educational application based an immersive virtual reality application using a 360-degree camera and a software engine called Unity. The content in the application contains conversations with topics given in the English II course and listening comprehension skill exercises tailored to the needs of users, especially for Computer Science Faculty Students. Each exercise is given a score or value to monitor the improvement of students' listening skills before and after using the application. This research is part of Research and Development (R & D) research. In this study, a descriptive qualitative approach was used to explain the process, appearances, and results of application validation by six English lecturers. The result of this research was  an immersive-based educational application with virtual reality technology for listening comprehension exercises using several features like text to speech, rotating 360-degree ability, and scoring system. This application achieved a validation value of 94 percent.The highest value of the validation results was the suitability of the application to the needs of students, while the lowest value of this application was the video display which still has to be improved again.

Abstract

The use of Online translation (OT) for doing English assignments is now inevitable. Teachers neither can prevent their students to use OT nor can supervise it when all of the learning process has been running online from home to home. Therefore, both teachers and students should bring out the advantages of OT to improve English competence and to reduce the disadvantages of using OT. This study is aimed to investigate the students’ perspectives of using OT for doing English assignments and to describe the advantages and disadvantages of OT. The study is presented in descriptive qualitative design. The data collection instruments are questionnaires and open-ended questions. The participants are 198 students of Information system department, University of Putra Indonesia YPTK Padang. The findings of this study showed that for about 80% of English students depend their English assignments on OT. Based on the EFL students’ perspective, the advantages of using OT are time saver and instant results and the disadvantages of using OT are inaccuracy in the results relate to cultural context, idiom, sentences with metaphor and pragmatic aspects for learning the structure of English language. The study proposes some ideas for teachers to teach their students strategies and guidance for using OT properly and to avoid making mistakes.
