Abstract

AbstrakAttitude plays a great role in student’s learning behavior. This study was designed to investigate the contributions of classroom environment to students’ attitude toward math. Participants in this study were 70 students of Etika Dharma Catholic Junior High School in Surabaya. Classroom environment was measured using adaptation of what is happening in This Class? (WIHIC) scale and attitude toward math was measured using a scale developed by the researcher. The result shows that there is a significant positive correlation between classroom environment and attitude toward math (r = 0,359, p < 0,01), which means the more positive students’ perception of their classroom environment, the more positive their attitude towards math would be. The linear regression analysis shows that classroomenvironment effectively contributes 12,9% to students’ attitude toward math (r2 = 0,129). Classroom environment can be used to predict students’ attitude toward math, with the equation Y = 48,916 + 0,229 X ± 23,023. Result shows that classroom environment has a significant influence onattitude toward math, although not too significant. This is due to the existence of other variables that may influence attitude toward math, such as achievement, peers, teacher, and other environmental factors. Keywords: attitude toward math, classroom environment, math

Abstract

Exercising at a fitness center is one of the methods to obtain an ideal body shape. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were differences in body dissatisfactions based on the type of exercise motivation. Participants were 100 male members of a fitness center who exercise at least twice a week for at least one hour per session. Measures used were body dissatisfaction questionnaire (Tylka, Bergeron, & Schwartz, 2005) and exercise motivation questionnaire by Markland and Tobin (cited in Vlachopoulos, 2012). Results showed a difference in body dissatisfaction between men with internal exercise motivation and those with external exercise motivation (Z = - 3.142, p < .05). Men who engaged exercises as driven by external exercise motivation had higher body dissatisfaction than those with internal motivation. This indicates that men with external exercise motivation were more dissatisfied with their body image, who were more likely to quit exercising if they did not obtain the expected result, or else they became obsessive with exercises because they was dissatisfied with their figures.

Abstract

Lingkungan kelas diukur menggunakan adaptasi skala What is Happening in This Class?

Abstract

This study aims to reveal whether there are differences in father-child relationships and mother-child relationships based on gender and to determine whether the father-child and mother-child relationship affects smartphone addiction in adolescents. This research used quantitative methods. The research participants were 159 male and 229 female adolescents aged 10-15 years in Surabaya and Sidoarjo. Research data was obtained using a questionnaire distributed online (google forms). The data were processed by using a t-test and multiple regression analysis. This research concludes that the quality of the father-child and mother-child relationship does not differ across gender. Father-child relationships and mother-child relationships both affect teenagers' smartphone addiction. The implication of this study emphasizes the importance of parents forming positive quality parent-child relationships by being friends with children, communicating intimately, and reducing parent-child conflicts. Further research is recommended to examine parent-child relationships from two perspectives: parents and adolescents or conduct qualitative research to describe the dynamics of parent-child relationships and smartphone addiction in adolescents. Keywords: Parent-child relationship, smartphone addiction, gender, adolescent

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the phenomenon of smartphone addiction among Junior High School students, with a specific focus on parent-child relationship, self-control, and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). In addition, data was collected through Smartphone Application-Based Addiction Scale (SABAS), Network of Relationship Inventory – Relationship Quality Version (NRI-RQV), Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS), and FOMO Scale. A total of 681 Adolescents aged 12-15 from Junior High Schools in Surabaya or Sidoarjo were sampled using convenience sampling, while Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was adopted for data analysis. The results showed that there was a direct and indirect impact of adolescents' relationship on the tendency to become addicted to smartphones. Furthermore, closeness and incompatibility of adolescents with fathers and mothers indirectly influenced smartphone addiction, mediated by self-control and FOMO, respectively. This reported the importance of enhancing warm relationship to reduce the risk of smartphone addiction in adolescents.

Abstract

Aggressiveness may lead to various negative effects on children. Therefore, early intervention on aggressiveness is necessary. One approach of the intervention is to teach prosocial behavior by using media, especially children film. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of children prosocial film on aggressiveness. Total subjects were 56 first grade students. Instrument used in this study was an aggressiveness observation sheet designed and based on the physical aggression theory (Tremblay & Nagin, 2005) and verbal aggression theory (Vissing, Straus, Gelles & Harrop, 1991). Result showed that children prosocial film reduces the students’ aggressiveness. Moreover, students who watched the children prosocial film have lower aggressiveness compared to students who watched a neutral children film. Therefore, parents and educators could use children prosocial film as an effective way to treat aggressiveness.

Abstract

This study was keen to investigate whether a relation exists between self-objectivication and body dissatisfaction; whether a difference exists in body dissatisfaction as a result of social comparison; and whether self-objectivication level of adolescent girls moderate this affect. An experimental pretest-posttest independent group design was used. Participants (N = 32) were 17 - 22 aged psychology students. Results reveal a correlation between self-objectivication and body dissatisfaction. Nonetheles, there is no influence of social comparison towards body dissatisfaction, also no such influence exists towards body dissatisfaction moderated by self-objectivication level. The effectivity of treatment, partisipants’ personality are discussed, along with self-improvement and self-enhancement motives in conducting social comparison.
