Abstract

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a condition associated with drinking alcohol during pregnancy and affect embryo development. FAS is the most common congenital disabilities in the world. The effects of FAS are mental retardation, cranial abnormalities, and heart defects. Moringa oleifera is a highly valued plant. It has an impressive range of biological activities, including antioxidant, antiproliferation, and anti-inflammatory. This study aims to assess the effect of Moringa oleifera leaf extracts in inhibiting growth retardation of chicken embryo growth induced by alcohol. The study was a true experimental design with posttest controlled group design. There were five groups with 5 of chicken embryo each group. The treatments contained 15% alcohol and aquadest as positive control (P+), without alcohol as negative control (P-), P0.5 (0,5g/dl), P5 (5g/dl), P50 (50g/dl) by adding Moringa oleifera leaf extracts, respectively. Moringa oleifera leaf extracts showed the improvement of length and head diameter as a benchmark for chicken embryo development with P5 concentration showed the best results to overcome growth retardation in alcohol-induced chicken embryos. This finding implies against possibility Moringa oleifera leaf extracts can be alternative medicine to prevent growth retardation.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia that occurs due to abnormalities in insulin secretion. Chronic hyperglycemia in diabetes causes dysfunction and failure of various organs of the body such as the kidneys, eyes, nerves, heart and blood vessels. The purpose of this study was to analyze how the effect of the treatment given by Moringa leaves on diabetes mellitus conditions, especially on glomerular histopathological damage. In this study, to make diabetic mice using the induction of streptozotocin after which Moringa leaves were given as a form of treatment. The dosage of Moringa leaf extract was divided into 5 groups, namely 62.5mg / kg, 125mg / kg, 250mg / kg, 500mg / kg, and 1000mg / kg doses. The histopathological image obtained will be assessed using scoring, and for data analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test and followed by the post hoc test using the Mann-Whitney test. The results of this study indicate that there is an effect of giving Moringa leaf extract on glomerular histopathological damage. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis data analysis test showed significant results, namely p = 0.001, after the data obtained were significant data, then it was continued with the post hoc test using the Mann-Whitney test with significant results when compared with negative controls ranging from the 125mg / kg dose group 1000mg / kg.

Abstract

Lipid metabolic disorder in hyperlipidemia characterized by an increase in the entire lipid profile in the blood. In 2019, the global prevalence of hyperlipidemia was 64.2%. Many patients with diabetes mellitus developed to hyperlipidemia. Diabetes mellitus characterized by hyperglycemia that caused by insulin production defects or decreased insulin resistance. Hyperglycemia in this study resulted from the injection of a streptozotocin dose of 45mg/kgBB intraperitoneally. Hyperglycemia could induced hyperlipidemia. It is due to increased lipid synthesis resulting in overproduction of HMG-CoA and ROS. Moringa leaves contain active substances such as flavonoids and vitamin C that act as antioxidants. This study was conducted to find out the effective dose of moringa leaf extract to lower the total cholesterol levels of male Wistar rats induced by streptozotocin. The dose of moringa leaf extract was divided into 5 groups, namely 62.5 mg/kgBW, 125 mg/kgBW, 250 mg/kgBW, 500 mg/kgBW, and 1000 mg/kgBW. The analysis of the data in this study was a Pearson correlation test that showed p< 0.05. It demonstrated that administration of moringa leaf extract correlated with decreased cholesterol levels of male Wistar rats. The effective dose of moringa leaf extract was calculated using a linear regression test. The equation obtained from the regression test was y= 0.0739x + 153.59, so the dose of moringa leaf extract that effectively lowers the total cholesterol levels of male Wistar rats was 528.96 mg/kgBW. Abstract

Coronary heart disease is one of the biggest causes of death in developing countries. Civil servants (PNS) are a group of people who are susceptible to the disease because of their busy lives. Framingham risk score (FRS) can predict the occurrence of coronary heart disease in the next 10 years. The purpose of this study was to determine the prediction of coronary heart disease for the next 10 years in civil servants in Jember Regency. This type of research is descriptive observational with a cross sectional design. The data was taken from the medical records of patients with echelon II and III civil servants who did a medical sheck up at Dr. Soebandi Hospital in December 2013. Prediction of coronary heart disease for the next 10 years using the FRS method. From 63 medical record data, the prediction results of coronary heart disease in civil servants were 76.2% low risk, 17.5% moderate risk, and 6.3% high risk. Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia that induces excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and  causes oxidative stress. Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a diabetic complication characterized by structural and functional changes of the myocardium. Fibrosis is one of the pathological features of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Moringa oleifera leaves have been reported to possess antidiabetic and antioxidant activities which could prevent diabetic complications such as cardiomyopathy. A previous study reported that M. oleifera leaves extract have protective effects to the kidneys and liver of rats exposed to oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of the M. oleifera leaves extract on cardiac fibrosis of rats induced by streptozotocin (STZ).  This was an experimental study using a posttest-only control group design. Thirty-three male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups i.e. normal control  group (Group 1) were administered normal saline, diabetic control group (Group 2) were administered normal saline, and diabetic treatment group (Group 3) were administered M. oleifera leaves extract. Diabetes induction of rats was conducted by intraperitoneally injection of STZ at dose of 45 mg/kg BW. The M. oleifera leaves extract at a dose of 1000 mg/kg BW was administered orally one time a day for 28 days. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann Whitney. A significant difference in cardiac fibrosis occurrence between three groups was observed (p < 0.05). No cardiac fibrosis was observed in normal control group, meanwhile cardiac fibrosis was observed in all rats (9 rats) of the diabetic control group (G2). Only 2 rats in the treatment group (G3) had cardiac fibrosis. In conclusion, M. oleifera leaves extract can inhibit cardiac fibrosis in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Abstract

Entisol is a marginal soil spreading over some areas in Indonesia. It has loose soil consistency, low aggregation rates, sensitive to erosion, and low nutrient content. Entisol has high K deficiency.  Potassium plays an important role in rice growth (Oryza sativa). The aim of the research was to study the effects of  type and dose of potassium fertilizers on available K in Entisol and its uptake by rice plants. The study was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 2 factors, i.e. the types of potassium fertilizers (KCl, ZK and KNO3) and doses of potassium fertilizers (0 kg K2O ha-1, 50 kg K2O ha-1, 100 kg K2O ha-1, and 150 kg K2O ha-1), with three replications. The results showed that the type of potassium fertilizers applied resulted in similar effects on almost all soil and plant parameters. The dose of potassium fertilizers significantly affected all  soil and plant parameters, the higher the doses, the higher the values of the parameters observed.
