Abstract

This study analyses the perlocutionary effect of the central character’s utterances that signifies gender-based discrimination in Anne with an E series season one (2017). This study uses descriptive-qualitative method. By using Austin and Searle’s theory on Speech Act and a feminist perspective, the perlocutionary act is analysed through the analysis of type, form and function of utterances. The results of the study indicate that there is resistance and disapproval of gender discrimination. From the central character’s utterances, 3 forms of gender discrimination were identified, namely marginalization, stereotype and subordination.Keywords:perlocutionary act ;speech act; Anne with an E series; gender discrimination.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the anxiety that has been experienced by the main character from the novel If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo. Through the analytical descriptive method and supported with psychoanalysis theory, the present writer also concludes that the main character has experienced the anxiety, which gives the influence in her social life. This anxiety is influenced by the internal and external factors. Two differences background which affected are sexual disorder behavior of the main character and harsh environment which made the main character has experienced the anxiety as long as her life. That matter also influences the characters psychology. The anxiety effect gives too much mental pressure to the main character. Keywords: Anxiety, Main Character, Psychoanalysis, Transgender

Abstract

AbstractThe main topic of this research is the struggle of an African-American woman in facing discriminatory treatment.  It is a study on the main character in Margot Lee Shetterly's novel: Hidden Figures. The process of this research involves the overall story, intrinsic elements: character and characterization, conflict, setting and plot and also extrinsic elements: liberal feminisme, multicultural feminism and racism. This qualitative research is conducted by applying descriptive analysis method along with library research technique, leading to the identification that racism and feminism turns out to cause discrimination. The main character, Katherine, undergoes dicrimination on  education and employment for African-American people. These experiences eventually prompts the main character to fight against discrimination by proving that she is capable of becoming the first black woman who works for NASA.Keywords : discrimination, female main chracter, feminism, racism, struggle

Abstract

The main topic in this research is gender discrimination which is based on the study of the main character in Bina Shah's Before She Sleeps. This research process involves the whole story, intrinsic elements: characters and characterizations, settings, and conflicts, as well as extrinsic elements: gender discrimination, patriarchy systems, and power relations. This qualitative research is supported by descriptive analysis methods and literature study techniques which result in findings that politicized gender disparities are the cause of gender discrimination. The main character, Sabine, experiences several forms of gender discrimination namely limited access to education and not allowed to work. Her only choice is to be a good housewife with three to five husbands, and to bear as many children as possible. Abstract

AbstractThis research discusses the psychopathic behaviour of the antagonist, John Bristow, in the novel The Cuckoo`s Calling by Robert Galbraith. This research aims at identifying the characteristics and causes of  psychopathic  behavior of the  antagonist and the impact on others and himself. The research was conducted using descriptive analysis method and psychoanalysis approach. John, who has hurt others without remorse, is not afraid of repeating his crime. He is able to deceive and manipulate others, not to mention coldhearted, and has a lack of emphaty. Strong id and weak superego originating from John's lack of attention and affection from his parents and closest people are the causes of John`s psychophatic behaviour. Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to point out the main characters independence in Qaisra Shahrazs The Holy Woman, and to identify measures that she has undertaken to fight for her independence in confronting the tradition in Pakistan. Using descriptive qualitative methods and feminist studies, it is  learned that the main character is a common but strong woman who must serve as a Holy Woman” and marry” the Quran. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze types and functions of satire used in two of Ronny Chiengs stand-up comedy performances; America Needs More Asians (2019) and Everythings Stupid (2020). This study uses descriptive qualitative method with observation and note-taking technique. The analysis show that the types of satire found in the utterances of Ronny Chieng are; satire (15), cynicism (7), sarcasm (3), and innuendo (2).  The satire functions as ridiculing of thoughts and ideas, sarcasm, laughing at ideas and habits and understating facts. Satire is used in the stand-up comedy as a critic, specifically for Caucasians, African Americans and Asians.Keywords: satire, type and function, stand-up comedy

Abstract

AbstractThe main topic in this research is modern slavery which is examined based on the study of the main character in Shyima Halls memoir: Hidden Girl. The process of this research involves the overall story, intrinsic elements: character and characterization, conflict, setting, and symbol, as well as extrinsic elements: perspective of cultural studies focusing on class and the understanding of modern slavery. This qualitative research is conducted by applying descriptive analysis method along with library research technique, leading to the identification that class turns out to be the cause of modern slavery. The main character, Shyima, undergoes three forms of modern slavery: human trafficking, domestic slavery and child slavery. These experiences eventually forms her determination to fight against modern slavery individually, by becoming an anti-modern slavery activist.Keywords: class, main character, modern slavery, slavery

Abstract

The main topic of this research is the relationship of stereotypes and masculinity of woman which is discussed based on a study of the main character in the novel Moana by Suzanna Francis. The research process uses intrinsic elements: characters, settings, conflicts, irony, and symbol, as well as extrinsic elements: gender, masculinity-femininity, stereotypes and symbolic violence. This research uses descriptive analytical methods and literature study techniques that produce stereotype findings that cause masculine trait of characters in the main character. The main character, suffered gender injustice of stereotypes and symbolic violence which can be seen from her fathers prohibition to let her go outside the reef. Upon the agreement, the main character was encouraged to go outside the reef by carrying out the mission of recovering and saving inhabitants of the village.Keywords: Masculine, stereotypes, gender injustice, symbolic violence, and woman.

Abstract

The topic of this research is related to the character change experienced by the main character in the novel Assassins Creed: Forsaken by Oliver Bowden. This research uses the descriptive analysis research method with the literature study technique which produces findings in the form of intrinsic elements such as characterization, plot, conflict, and setting. Extrinsic elements, namely psychological theories, through the perspective of psychoanalysis, are used to find out the factors that cause the character changes to occur in the main character. Other findings in this research also include character change caused by an event and interaction with other individuals.Keywords: Changes of Character; Main Character; Change Factor.
