Abstract

Project Based Learning (PBL) in English for Specific Purpose (ESP) has been believed to enable student to have hand on and contextual experiences related to their English Language Learning. In addition to the teaching and learning process, project can also be used as an assessment instrument through PBL. Despite the possible project-based assessment, the existing studies have mainly focused on the PBL as a teaching and learning approach with less attention on assessment. This paper describes the use of project based assessment in two ESP courses in an Islamic college in East Java. The stages of the assessment and students’ responses on the benefit and challenges are presented. Implication for PBL in English language teaching and learning and other possible implementation of project-based assessment are also presented in the paper.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Service learning embedded in the course plays a vital role in transforming theoretical knowledge into practical one. It provides students with the concept and brings them in contextualizing their concept that they have already learned in the classroom. This study explores the process of enacting service learning using asset-based approach to university-community engagement. This study employed multiple data sets from observation, semi-structured interviews with teachers and principles, focused group discussion with students, and students’ products of digital textbooks. The findings revealed that service learning using the asset-based approach empowered all the stakeholders and contributed to emergence of the equitable partnership between university and community. The students’ product of a digital textbook represents collaboration between English teachers, the teacher educator, and the university students who successfully designed learning resources that meet the academic level and interests of students of the school partners. Abstract

Understanding cultural barriers is crucial in the context of increasing global collaboration in education. This research addresses a gap in the literature by focusing on the cultural barriers hindering the Indonesian pre-service English teacher’s learning process and the strategies to deal with it in a cross-cultural context which is in Thailand primary school. Through qualitative research, involving semi-structured interviews that allowed participants to share their unique challenges and perspectives, three types of cultural barriers are identified; 1) Communication barriers due to language differences, English knowledge and skills of the Thai students; 2) Knowledge about the education of the host country which involves unfamiliarity with the Thai curriculum and Thai primary school learning routines; 3) The integration of technology as there is no facilitate to integrate technology and students’ misbehaviour. Thus, nine types of strategies to overcome these cultural barriers employed include harnessing various tools, asking for help from local people, utilizing verbal and non-verbal language, employing instructional strategy, applying a social approach, planning lessons and units, grouping students for instruction, using verbal intervention, and resorting to logical consequence. These findings emphasize the importance of training for future educators to thrive in cross-cultural contexts, highlighting the need for further research in policy and program development for pre-abroad training of aspiring teachers.

Abstract

Students often consider writing a thesis project burdensome, resulting in longer completion of the degree. This article reports findings from a qualitative research exploring students' readiness to write bachelor theses. Questionnaires were distributed across different batches of students working on their thesis projects at an Islamic university in East Java. The respondents also participated in a focused discussion group to further explore their readiness. Data from 200 participants highlights that students generally have sufficient cognitive readiness regarding the areas and scopes of topics in ELT research. They have adequate to low academic readiness on aspects related to thesis writing as a form of academic writing. These students, however, have low social readiness. While the responses indicate that the students have high motivation to complete the thesis projects, more than half of the students reflected that they do not have a clear plan for the completion, are not very disciplined in working on their theses, have low reading interest and cannot manage their mood. The findings suggest that there is a gap between expectation and efforts. While they are cognitively ready, they are not socially ready. This implies that when supervising, the department and thesis supervisors need to touch upon psychological aspects of thesis writing intensively
