Abstract

Listening and reading are receptive skills because learners do not produce language to do these. In the process of learning a new language, learners begin with receptive skills and then later move on production use. Both receptive and productive skills are important to achieve communicative competence. Developing listening and reading test are related to the materials, the test level, and type of test item formats. It will give various type of learning activities and improve students’ competence in English as well.

Abstract

This research aims to design A Computer Based Test Version of An Academic Vocabulary Test. This study is intended to portray students' capacity in understanding Academic Vocabulary. Also, this research also describes the student's perception of the utilization of the computer-based test.  In this study, media and material specialist were involved to confirm the content validity and product quality. Other than that, there are 50 learners participated as the test taker. Surveys and Academic Vocabulary Test was done to resemble the data. Evaluation regarding the program was completed concerning material and the aspects of the media. The suggestion given by the expert were utilized to enhance the utilization of the computer-based test. The validator recommends utilizing four steps; creating interface, coding, publishing, and packaging. Moreover, after the utilization of Computer Based Test, the English Teacher Education Department students' capacity in understanding the meaning of Academic Vocabulary is known in the average level. They have got the average mean score of 53 forthe vocabulary test. On the other hand, the result of non-English Teacher Education Department students'capacity in doing the test is in the low level. They have got the average mean score of 35 forthe vocabulary test. Moreover, the student's opimiom shows that there are 95,5% of the students provide a positive perception to the utilization of A Computer Based Test. They feel positive because of the practicality, and the particular effectiveness of the program to describe students' capacity in understanding Academic Vocabulary.

Abstract

As an English teacher, teacher must be able to develop agood teaching media. Traditional textbooks, while useful, areinsufficient to address many questions. As a result, teachers try tolook for another resources, social networks, and the web foranswers to their questions. This study focuses on the teachers’ability in creating online teaching media at Surabaya and SidoarjoSenior High School. This study also portrays the challenges andthe opportunity of the online teaching media usage. It also coversthe information about language preferably used by teacher in theonline teaching media usage. Nine teachers are chosen fromSurabaya and Sidoarjo as the subject of the study. Quantitative andQualitative approach is used as the design of the research.Interview and documentation are used to collect the data. Next, thedata are analyzed by using Likert Scale followed by triangulation.The result shows that teachers’ ability in creating teaching media isgood. The challenges of online teaching media usage are schoolfacilities, time management and school regulation. The opportunityof online teaching media usage are active learner, monitoring roleand active teachers. Abstract

Students in vocational high school are required to learn their vocational skills and English as a Foreign Language in preparation for their potential profession or job. This research investigates the relationship between reading comprehension and speaking skills in English classes and the degree to which reading comprehension relates to vocational high school students' speaking abilities. Thirty-five students from a vocational high school in Surabaya participated in the study. This study's design was a correlation study, and it was performed using a descriptive quantitative method. The students were given a test to assess their abilities. The results of this study indicated that there was a connection between reading comprehension and speaking ability. The correlation coefficient was 0.61, and the correlation was strong. The teacher should have greater access to what they are reading, and improved reading resources would aid their communication skills.Keyword:  Correlation, Reading Comprehension, Speaking Skill

Abstract

Philosophy for Children is an educational approach that emphasizes philosophical inquiry as a central component of the learning process. Critical thinking is cultivated through the use of reasoned moves to construct arguments. This study aims to look into how fairy tales can teach students about philosophy while also teaching them to read. This qualitative study is based on a case study at one of Surabaya's primary schools. As part of the research, two teachers participated. The data was gathered through interviews and document analysis. The findings showed that the students in the study used their own experiences to speculate and hypothesize about the activities of fictional characters. Implications and suggestions were also made

Abstract

In the pandemic era, schools are implementing online learning strategies including at the Early Childhood Education level. Online learning for children of course presents its own challenges for the teaching teachers. This study aims to investigate online learning strategies at the play group level. The method in this research uses qualitative research that describes what strategies are used in online learning and its application in the NU 104 Al-Firdaus Muslimat Playgroup. Data collection techniques used in this study were observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that the Muslimat NU 104 Al-Firdaus Play Group uses video or photo media and the results of children's activities are sent by parents to the teacher via video or photos via the Whatsapp application. The activities carried out included singing, telling stories with parents, working on worksheets, and experimenting with making hand sanitizers. For parents who do not have a mobile device, home visits are carried out by the teacher with the same activities, namely singing, telling stories with parents, working on worksheets, and experimenting with making hand sanitizers.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic outbreak has raised the emergence of remote teaching and learning process, including foreign language learning such as English and Arabic. Existing studies in context emergency remote learning have mainly focused on methods, strategies, assessment, and teachers' and students' challenges. Meanwhile, parents as 'substitute' teachers seem to be missed from exploration. This two-phased mixed method study explores the roles parents play with their children's learning of English and Arabic as foreign languages in Indonesia. Quantitative data were collected by distributing online questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS25. Forty-two (42) parents with children aged 6-18 selected through snowball sampling responded to the questionnaires. Six (6) parents were interviewed to get in-depth qualitative-exploratory data on parental involvement. The responses were transcribed, coded and categorized based on the main themes related to parental involvement. The two sets of quantitative and qualitative data in corroboration were used to draw conclusion. The findings suggest roles in controlling, motivating, and managing the learning time as the parents' most salient involvements. The results also highlight some strategies the parents take when their children learn the two foreign languages. Recommendations for schools and teachers to optimize parental involvement in remote learning for foreign languages are also presented

Abstract

Abstract. Technology has many applications in the field of media for teaching and learning. In private education, teachers have to be creative in creating interactive teaching media. Moreover, teaching media are needed to support the success of teaching and learning processes. Comics is favorable to read because it is fun. Online comics become popular in remote learning because students work a lot with online applications today. Toonytools is one of the favorable online comic creators. This study aims to investigate the use of Toonytools as a teaching medium in teaching Narrative Text. This study uses mix-method. A survey as a quantitative and qualitative interview was done to the students and the English Teacher. Some possible benefits and challenges within the implementation are suggested. The finding of this research is the effectiveness of using the online comic platform Toonytools, a learning media to teach the narrative text. This platform is easy to use and applied to make Toonytools feasible as a favorite online comic platform for teachers to create learning media.
