Abstract

Subliminal messages are the ways to influence human attitude, decision and action by inserting information to his/her mind in a so fast a fashion that it can’t be captured by human sense. Subliminal messages have been successfully applied in the area of industry and trade, but not so in clinical area as a therapy due to a number of weaknesses. We tried to improve it by modifying subliminal messages into subliminal conditioning, and examined it to smokers. Subliminal conditioning does not send messages, but associations. This study was a laboratory experiment with a within group design. The independent variable was Subliminal Conditioning, and the dependent variable is smoking behavior. Participants were selected from students at a private university in Jakarta aged at least 20 years old, and smoked at least five cigarettes a week. Of the 34 participants who participated in the study, only the data of 12 of them could be used. The association was smoking with fear, in which a picture of a cigarette was concurrently presented with a picture of a tragic death to the participants through a movie serial. The participants were required to watch the movie serial one hour each day for 10 consecutive days, except Sunday. They were also required to make notes on the number of cigarettes they smoked every day during the experimental week. Using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, the study showed that subliminal conditioning therapy was able to significantly reduce their smoking behavior (Z = 2.1, p < 0.05), though it failed to entirely stop their smoking behavior. This research was a start to the development a better therapy for smokers. The use of a better control, more participants, and higher level of smoking addiction was recommended for future research. Keywords: subliminal, conditioning, smoking cessation, therapy, psychotherapy, addiction.

Abstract

The number of single working women in their early adult life tends to increase in Indonesia. They chose to stay single because they want to spend their time and energy for their career. On the other hand, parents expect them to get married to avoid negative social labeling, to make sure that their daughters are secured, and also to give them grandchildren. The common labels include “perawan tua” or “tidak laku.” These make parents expect them to get married soon. This expectation creates intrapersonal conflict in single working women. Intrapersonal conflict is a conflict between an individual with herself and occurrs when the individual has needs, desires, realities and values that are inconsistent one another, and fails to meet two or more needs. This study aims to describe intrapersonal conflict in single working women agaist parents’ demand to get married. This study applied descriptive qualitative approach and used in-depth interviews to four respondents with various characteristics (middle to upper-middle class with two age groups: 25-29 and 30-35 years old). The results showed that parental demand to their single working daughters to get married is a value that must be obeyed. Intrapersonal conflict intensity is influenced by culture, respondents’ characteristics, the extent that value influences behavior, respondents’ feelings, birth order, and married sisters. In order to make intrapersonal conflict free from negative impact on single working women, it is hoped that this research may broaden parents’ understanding about their daughters. Parents’ expectation to their daughters to get married should be communicated so that it does not influence their daughters’ mental well-being.Keywords: single women, intrapersonal conflict, marriage expectation, parental demand

Abstract

Of the so many ethnic groups in Indonesia, the Minangkabau-or Minang-people have the strongest tradition of migration. This ethnic group is also known as the largest matrilineal society in the world (Wikipedia). This qualitative study looks at how the Minang women who live in the surrounding areas of Jakarta perceive the Minang language, Indonesian language, and Minang culture in their daily lives. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with four adult female Minang informants, aged between 39 to 55 years old. This study reveals that the four women no longer perceive the Minang language as important to be maintained. They prefer to use Indonesian in their daily communication, both in the family domain as well as the public domain. In relation to the Minang culture, the four women tend to maintain the egalitarian and democratic principles of the Minang tradition. In fact, the quality of maintaining and passing on the Minang culture to their children depends on the attachment of the women to the culture itself.

Abstract

School bullying is a serious problem in Indonesia and need the attention of scholars from different knowledge background to find the solution. It involves aggressive behavior which is considered as normal among young people. Their behaviour is highly influenced by the school condition and their peer group developed at the early childhood in the family. The types of attachment with parents may result in a certain child behavior, as children learn from what their parents do at home. There are three types of attachment styles. i.e. secure, avoidance, and ambivalence attachment styles. This research attempts toexamine the relationship between childhood attachment style and the tendency of aggression from the bully’s perspective. Using quantitative approach, the study population was students considered as bullies in Jakarta high schools. Sample taken from two selected schools known as having problems with bullying in Jakarta. The sampling technique was stratified random sampling. The study used the adapted Attachment Styles Questionnaire to measure the attachment style of students, and The Tendency of Aggression for School Aged Children Questionnaire. The total respondents were 53 students ranged between 15 to 18 years old. One interesting finding is the fact that most respondents were female (n=35, 66%). This is different from our previous assumption that bullies commonly are males. It might be true as the indicators of bullying which were reported mostly were verbal. Another finding is that 43 respondents had secure attachment style, and there was no relationship between such attachment style with the tendency of aggression (r = 0,151; p > .05). Due to the small number on the other two groups, the research was unable to do the analysis. Future study needs to be done with these two groups, as it is likely that non-secure attachment styles relate to the aggression behaviour.

Abstract

Psychology as it has been taught in Indonesia has largely followed Western frameworks, grounded in Western modes of thought considered modern, namely, the scientific study of individual mental processes. Scientific inquiry in this tradition relies on empirical and objective methods, allowing findings to be tested and replicated. Historically, however, the early development of psychology in Indonesia was more pragmatic, emerging primarily from psychometric training courses rather than from a systematic engagement with psychology as a scientific discipline in line with established epistemological standards. This historical trajectory raises a critical and reflective question: Is there a form of psychology, or ilmu jiwa, rooted in Eastern values within the archipelago? And what distinguishes it from Western psychology? These questions form the foundation of the author’s historical and academic exploration, with a particular focus on Javanese thought. Javanese perspectives were chosen as the primary focus due to the relative accessibility and availability of relevant literature. Accordingly, this study first examines what is termed Nusantara Psychology. Through a careful review and verification of sources, the author focuses on four Javanese thinkers: Soemantri Hardjo Prakoso, Ki Ageng Suryomentaram, Panji Sosrokartono, and Muhammad Subuh. These thinkers share a defining characteristic that sets their conceptualizations of the human psyche apart from Western psychology: the central role of spirituality in understanding human psychological life. The psychological frameworks developed by these Javanese thinkers are expected to contribute to the future development of Indigenous Psychology as well as Indonesian Psychology (Psikologi Indonesia). Further research is encouraged to explore non-Javanese thinkers and to conduct comparative analyses, in order to deepen understanding of the mental processes of Indonesian people.
