Abstract

Humanism as a paradigm is often declared as an alternative approach to education. This paradigm is, in fact, an approach developed in the field of literature and education. The objective of this study is to determine the values underlie the epistemology of the humanistic education theory. Epistemology is the elements that are abstract or implicit. To recognize the epistemology of humanism education theory, this study examines the elements of basic assumptions, values and models of the theory. The results show that the assumptions promoting the theory have similarities with the basic assumptions of the phenomenological epistemology. It sees humans as creatures with consciousness and knowledge for what he did. Thus, every human’s behavior or action is conducted in purpose. In humanistic education theory, meaningfulness and usefulness of the learning process are determined by the learner, not the educator. For that reason, learning design and methods should be developed by the participants based on the needs of the learners. Therefore, the theory does not provide a model for an individual learning process. Thus, it can be concluded that the theory of humanism education rooted from phenomenology epistemology.

Abstract

Islamic paternal parenting has socially patterned the man dominant language behavior over woman since childhood. This study explores the dominance distributions of high female and low female status in their informal talk strategy, the actual language use,  among the students of The State Islamic Institute of Surakarta in three functional topical units of conversations. The analysis technique was introduced by Sinclair and Coulthard (1975), for which Leech (1983) modifies the speech acts. The data implies that the talk strategy among Muslim females is relatively similar to that of males. The higher female controls and initiates the interaction more while the lower is softer, more polite, more mutually supportive, and more cooperative to whomever she speaks to regardless of the status.Muslim Female; Act; Move; Talk Strategy

Abstract

Studies on charactonym leave an underinvestigated field of moves or jutsu in Japanese. Characters in action comics, anime, and computer games are equipped with moves e.g. Goku with his iconic Kamehameha, Monkey D. Luffy with his Gomu Gomu no Pistol, and Spider Man with his Maximum Spider. We argue that these moves deserve their own umbrella in charactonym studies – we call it jutsunym. Though adopting a Japanese martial art term, jutsunym is not limited on Japanese media. Investigating a corpus of jutsu defining comic, anime, and game series through the lens of Smith’s Peircean names as signs and Rudnyckyj’s relevance of content and form which was later developed by Gerus-Tarnawecky’s theory in literary onomastics, we found that in naming a jutsu or a move, the authors tend to consider what we call as indexical alignment – an alignment between the names of the jutsu or the moves with narrative, mechanical, visual, and audial elements. Narrative elements align themselves with jutsu names through story and character, mechanical elements through connotative and denotative, visual elements through indicative and implicative, and audial elements through quoting and catchphrasing.

Abstract

The study objectives are to recognize the application of Project-based Learning (PBL) and utilization of ORAI, which can develop student’s speaking skills and immensity of the progress in recount text for tenth grade in science class 1 at MAN Sukoharjo. The students were in the second semester in Academic Year 2018/2019. More than 40 % students of tenth grade in science class 1 at MAN Sukoharjo encountered obstacles in English learning, especially in conveying recount. The data collection techniques in this research were document collection, observation, interview, and test. The data validity of this study used the triangulation method, which means that there were more techniques and observations of treatment in collecting the data. The finding reveals that the application of PBL and utilization of ORAI can improve student’s speaking skills especially in conveying recount. The average of students’ scores is found to be significantly different from each cycle. The pre-treatment average score is 69.33, the first cycle score is 72.66, and the second cycle score is 77.33. It means that almost all students can reach KKM (minimum completeness criteria). In conclusion, PBL and ORAI can be applied to enhance students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

It has been a formula in films, comics, animations, and games to narrate a protagonist who turns into an antagonist to offer an alternate narrative to enjoy. This good-to-evil and weak-to-strong transformation is followed by changes in the names of the characters. We argue that the name changes are marked by what we called as umbralatives, an augmentative marker to indicate that a character has undergone a nuance shift from light to dark and an increase in power. This study attempts to address this phenomenon by proving the existence of umbralatives, their typology, and functions. Applying Zwicky and Pullum’s expressive morphology, Dressler and Barbaresi’s morphopragmatics, and Reinhart’s gestalt perception of narrative texts, we attempt to prove the existence of umbralatives. Implementing Spradleyan analysis on a corpus of characters from seventy one titles of animations, comics, films, and games, it was revealed that umbralatives are classified into colorative, stative, referentive, inventive, and elliptive. These five umbralatives function as a narrative marker in animations, comics, and films and a ludic marker in games. This study discloses a new field of study on morphology with special emphasis over the combination of morphopragmatics and onomastics – umbralatives. The results of the study might also disclose further investigations over good-to-evil narratives which we call umbral narratives.

Abstract

Clickbait has been widely studied within the online news headline context; however, it is still understudied under the umbrella of transcreation. By employing the theory of transcreation by Gaballo (2012) and news headline tabloidization/clickbaiting presentation by Reinemann et al. (2012) on a corpus of online news headlines in a qualitative research design, we argued that news headline is transcreated for a clickbaiting purpose through the use particular linguistic features as the strategies. Those linguistic features are bombasting, referencing, and bamboozling. The first refers to the use of high-sounding or hyperbolic expressions, the second to popular references, and the last to multi-interpretable expressions. Each of the three transcreation strategies has what we call the degree of transferability. Through the degree of transferability, whether or not a translated online news headline might fall into the category of translation, transcreation, or in between could be revealed. The degrees of transferability might also reveal how bombasting, referencing, and bamboozling influence the categorization. The findings of the study could be employed as a guideline for news translation scholars and practitioners in reviewing and assessing the translation of online news headlines regarding the tendency of the tabloidization use in the clickbait context. Future studies could address the issues of the identities of news sites, news sites, and news readers as a parameter in assessing the quality of news headline translation or transcreation.
