Abstract

Breast cancer is a life-threatening disease among Indonesian women. The etiology of breast cancer is still uncertain, and therefore adequate primary prevention is difficult. Early diagnosis improves cancer prognosis while also reducing medical costs, substantially reducing mortality rates. Knowledge and awareness of breast cancer risk factors and their screening may help women take preventive measures. The community service program aimed to assess the level of understanding of undergraduate medical students on breast cancer and breast self-examination (BSE). It was a one-group pretest-postest quasi-experimental study to measure the level of knowledge of 100 medical students in Indonesia from August 20th, 2020, to February 27th, 2021. The participants were asked 36 questions, which was an adaptation of previous questionnaires. A mini-lecture managed the program that focuses on risk factors and early detection. Furthermore, pretest and post-test were conducted to analyze the knowledge level before and after the dissemination. The participants included in this study were mostly 20 years and above (62%). The average recognition of breast cancer and its early detection was not high. The knowledge of breast cancer among medical students was found to be moderate. The efficacy of dissemination among medical students was apparent in knowledge change. However, good cancer awareness, especially breast cancer, needs to be established and integrated through effective cancer educational programs in the medical curricula. Hence, modification of the medical curriculum through extensive training on breast cancer preventive measures and early diagnosis is required.

Abstract

Background: Soft Tissue Sarcoma is one of the rare cancers that increased in number in the last few years, but information about soft tissue sarcoma patients was still limited, especially in West Java, Indonesia. This study aimed to find out the patient profile and the histopathological cell distribution of soft tissue sarcoma patients who undergo radiotherapy. Methods: The study design was retrospective descriptive quantitative with the total sampling method. This study was done by observing all patients’ medical records registered from January 1, 2018, until December 31, 2019, in the Hospital-Based Cancer Registry of Radiology Department of Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung, with the inclusion criterion of patients diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma.  Results: A total of 5% (n = 75) from 1,388 cases registered were soft tissue sarcoma. The most common patient profile was female (57.3%) and age group 45–54 years (21.3%). The chief complaint was dominated by a painless mass (56.0%) at the lower limb (37.8%) with the most frequent cell of fibrosarcoma (17.3%), the most intention of the radiotherapy of curative adjuvant (78.7%). Conclusions: The number of soft tissue sarcoma is small compared to other malignancies. It is more common in women, the most age group is from 45 to 54 years with the median of 47 years old, ranging from 9 to 90 years, it tends to occur in the lower limb with a chief complaint of a painless mass, and the most frequent cell is fibrosarcoma. The common treatment combination is surgery with radiotherapy

Abstract

Background: Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a malignant epithelial tumor located in the nasopharynx and is the most common head and neck malignancy. This study aimed to find and describe the profile of NPC patients who undergo radiotherapy at Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung. Methods: This study was a descriptive study conducted at the Department of Radiology of Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung. This study employed a total sampling method and was done by observing patients’ status/medical records from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2019, which was registered based on the Hospital-Based Cancer Registry (HBCR). The inclusion criteria were all patients diagnosed with NPC and undergone radiotherapy. Results: There were 274 records (19.74%) included as NPC from 1,388 records. This cancer was more frequent in men (70.4%), in the age group of 45–54 years (35.0%), non-active smokers (58.8%), entrepreneurs (23.0%), and those who came from West Priangan (36.1%). The most common chief complaint was an enlargement of neck lymph nodes (55.1%) at stage IVB (42.8%). Histopathological findings were dominated by undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma (WHO III) (74.4%). Most of the patients were treated with chemoradiation (64.3%).Conclusions: NPC could happen to anyone with different background. This study found it was more frequent in men than women (2.3:1), in the fourth and fifth decade of life, in entrepreneurs followed by housewives, and even in non-active smokers. It also could happen in children to the elderly. Most patients came with an enlargement of neck lymph nodes as their chief complaint in the advanced stage and need chemoradiation as their treatment.

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide and in Indonesia. Most patients arrived at the hospital too late to receive the optimal benefit from breast cancer therapies, in which radiotherapy is one of the essential modalities. Radiotherapy is conducted as a local control by using the principle of ionizing radiation to eradicate the growth of cancer cells, hence reducing the chances of recurrence and enhancing survival rates. Some of the side effects include skin conditions that can manifest as redness and dry skin, fatigue, lymphedema, and chest wall fibrosis. Data and research on the profile of breast cancer patients with radiotherapy were still limited in Indonesia, particularly in West Java. This study aimed to assess the profile of breast cancer patients in Hasan Sadikin Hospital Bandung. Methods: This study was conducted with the retrospective descriptive quantitative method. The sampling technique was total sampling using 280 medical records of breast cancer patients with radiotherapy from January 1, 2018, until December 31, 2019, which were registered in the Hospital-Based Cancer Registry at the Radiotherapy Department, Hasan Sadikin General Hospital. Results: Breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy were mostly in the 45–54 years age group (36.4%). The most common chief complaint was a lump in the breast (66.4%), particularly in the left breast (45.0%). About 22.5% of all patients arrived at a locally advanced stage and 30.7% at an advanced stage with bone metastasis (10.6%), histopathological subtype Invasive Carcinoma No Special Type (IC-NST) (81.1%), and molecular subtype luminal B (9.6%). The most widely performed therapies were total mastectomy surgery (16.1%), neoadjuvant chemotherapy (62.9%), and complete adjuvant radiotherapy (47.1%) with External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT) method using LINAC (71.1%).Conclusions: Breast cancer is a health burden in Hasan Sadikin General Hospital and remains one of the national health priorities. Further evaluation of management and follow-up studies need to be done to improve the implementation of therapies for patients and reduce the incidence rate
