Abstract

More than 90% of local beef supply derived from smallholder farmers with a relatively slow in growth that could not meet national demand. Price of imported beef was lower than that of the local beef, thus price adjustment in farmers level was not profitable. The purpose of this study is to recommend alternative strategies to develop beef cattle industry under smallholders’ farmers condition. Strategies to develop the beef cattle industry are (1) To provide agricultural markets in order to facilitate farmer’s access easily to get some production inputs; (2) To facilitate technology that can be applied by farmers to increase cattle productions, hence improving farmers’ welfare; (3) To create a profitable market for animal produced by farmers; and (4) To establish subsystem of financing institutions at the village level to finance farmer’s cattle business. The inter-relationship among those strategies is needed to harmonize the implementation, supported by operational government policy. Key words: Industry, beef cattle, beef self-sufficiency

Abstract

This study was aimed to determine the production systems of beef cattle which can generate the income of smallholder farmers. The study was conducted in Bantul and Sleman Regencies, Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia. In total of 210 beef cattle farmers were involved in semi structural interview. Data was collected in the dry season (July to September) of 2015.  Descriptive analysis was carried out for the demographic, social, economic characteristic of respondents and beef cattle farm practices. Enterprise budgeting of beef cattle farms was made to analyse farm profit, return to management and family labour that could be used in further planning for better business management. Beef cattle farming founded as an alternative that can be developed in rural communities. In order to generate the incomes in both systems, breeding and fattening, production system in term of feeding practices has to be improved so that the cost can be reduced. Scientific processing of manure has to be done for value addition in the farming system. Calving interval has to be improved in breeding system, that the best condition is 12 months and the existing condition on the respondents was 16 months. For fattening, optimizing the duration for fattening period less than 3.6 months is the best improvement. Government policy is needed to improve beef farm economic condition especially in breeding farm.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the potential for cattle business development in Indramayu Regency. The research locations selected using purposive sampling method were based on the following criteria: (1) Indramayu Regency is the 2nd largest rice producers in the Province of West Java, (2) The area covers 2,099.42 km2 based on secondary data obtained from BPS Indramayu Regency in numbers and (3) The area of agricultural land is still larger than the area of resident housing. The data analysis method used the carrying capacity index (IDD) and Location Question (LQ) analysis formulas. The data were processed and explained descriptively. The results of this study resulted in carrying capacity values consisting of 3 patterns, namely the highest carrying capacity value > 20,000 AU (Gantar and Terisi). Medium carrying capacity value > 10,000 AU (Cikedung and Gabuswetan). Low value carrying capacity 5.000-10.000 AU (Haurgelis, Suyeg, Juntiyuat, Bongdua, Kertasemaya, Patrol, Kedokanbunder and Sindang). The results of the analysis of IDD > 2 there are 12 sub-districts, meaning that based on the availability of forage feed from agricultural land, it is included in the safe category to increase the population of beef cattle. The potential for beef cattle development in Indramayu Regency needs to be prioritized in 12 sub-districts with LQ > 1 and IDD > 2 accompanied by government policies to support investment in livestock marketing facilities and infrastructure for smallholders.

Abstract

Taruna Mandiri is farmers group that sells cattle and organic fertilizer. Since the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, they have relied more on selling organic fertilizers. This research aims to analyze the economic value of selling organic fertilizers and understand the use of social media in selling fertilizers. Selection of the location in the Taruna Mandiri farmers group, Ngemplak District, Sleman Regency. Purposive sampling of 15 out of 40 members who are administrators and manage the manufacture and processing of fertilizers for sale. The research was conducted in a quantitative descriptive method. Primary data retrieval through direct interviews using a questionnaire tool. The primary data taken include respondents' characteristics, livestock ownership, and understanding of the use of social media. The results showed that with 55 cattle ownership, the economic value of selling fertilizer was IDR. 535,000/period or IDR. 2,140,000/month. Farmers group are interested in selling by online because it is useful for expanding the market, adding information, and at the same time promoting products. The social media platforms that farmers want are WhatsApp business, Instagram and Facebook but due to limited knowledge, farmers use the personal WhatsApp platform. The existence of a touch of technology, both in labeling and using the right social media platforms, is very necessary for the group to improve product quality and expand the consumer market.

Abstract

The application of Geographic Information System (GIS) in animal husbandry incorporates data on grazing variation and excretion behavior in ruminant species, information on various forms of land use, grasslands, and grazing management with agropastoral systems. This study aimed to 1) identify, inventory, and map land parameters from geographical conditions; 2) determine potential base areas for beef cattle development businesses in West Java Province; and 3) calculate the potential availability of forage feed from agricultural waste. This research was conducted from July 2020 to August 2021 in four districts in West Java Province, namely Cirebon, Majalengka, Indramayu, and Ciamis. Secondary data from 2016 until 2020, were taken by the Central Bureau of Statistics of each region. Data analysis includes 1) land cover mapping supported by (GIS), 2) air temperature and air humidity index (THI) suitable for beef cattle, and 3) agricultural waste carrying capacity (CC) and carrying capacity index (IK) for beef cattle. The results of land cover mapping show that shrubs, forests, and fallow land in the four districts can be used for fodder grass cultivation. In contrast, paddy fields, rainfed rice fields, and drylands produce agricultural waste as a source of fodder forage. THI values of 79.69 - 83.08 are suitable for beef cattle development. Based on the results of inventory and mapping conducted by CCI, it can be concluded that 30 sub-districts from four districts in West Java Province are potential areas for beef cattle development. CC agricultural waste can increase the availability of forage feed for cattle.

Abstract

Objective: 1) To identify priority areas with Ciamis Regency that have comparative and competitive advantages 2) Availability of forages in prime priority areas.Methods: The material used cattle population data from BPS Ciamis Regency from 2016–2020. Panel data, which combines secondary data and cross-section data, were employed in this study. First, data analysis uses LQ and shift-share analysis, and two, it uses the carrying capacity of forage availability and the carrying capacity index.Results: Regional economic research results show that six sub-districts provide a comparative and competitive basis for superior commodities, namely Banjarsari, Lakbok, Cijeunjing, Cisaga, Rajadesa, and Baregbeg. These five sub-districts (Cimaragas, Sukadana, Panjalu, Panumbangan, and Sindangkasih) cannot be a base for cattle commodities but can be used as a base for other livestock. The study's findings indicate that forage is available, and the carrying capacity index forage availability has an IDD value of>2 SAFE. The Ciamis Regency has a secure green supply for expanding herds of beef cattle and can even export to other areas.Conclusions: The local government of Ciamis Regency must consider these six sub-districts an excellent commodity base, comparatively and competitively, with the carrying capacity of forage in safe conditions. The local government of Ciamis Regency must increase the number of livestock populations not only in production but also start opening up potential and conservative land for the development of grass cultivation, for example, by utilizing forest land for grass cultivation.
