Abstract

Remote learning used in a grammar class that was analyzed using environment analysis was the discussion in this study. It specifically referred to one grammar class, so the domain of this research was a qualitative case study. The data were taken using observation, interview, and document technique. The interpretative analysis was used to analyze the data using environment analysis theory that covers students, lecturer, and situation. The results of this study pointed out three points namely the types of problems taken from students and lecturer’s perspective, and situation observation during the implementation of remote learning in a grammar class. The problems occurred from students’ perspective were technical and non-technical problems; the obstructions from lecturer’s perspective were technical problems; and the obstacles taken from observed situation were the less percentage of students’ participation during opening and closing activities, the droning types of activities during opening, and the excluding technology used during opening and closing activities. Abstract

Teachers’ role in a class is fascinating because their existence may affect students’ behaviors due to their interaction regularly. The portrait of such situation was adapted into movies, one of them was Whiplash movie directed by Damien Chazelle. The Whiplash movie was utilized as the source of the data in this study. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify the role of the teacher in the Whiplash movie specifically in classroom activities by employing a qualitative method. It was used to collect and analyze the data. Furthermore, the data were taken from the subtitle of the movie focusing on the classroom’s activities scenes, consequently, the data analyzed were in the form of utterances. The gathered data were analyzed using the teacher’s roles theory proposed by Harmer (2001). The results showed that Mr. Fletcher, a teacher in the Whiplash movie, has eight characteristics including controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, resource, tutor, and observer. Those characteristics refer to the teacher’s learning style that influenced students’ behaviors a lot.

Abstract

Kegiatan abdimas yang dilaksanakan oleh tim merupakan kegiatan yang fokus pada pengajaran Bahasa Inggris dan dilaksanakan secara online atau dalam jaringan. Pada kegiatan ini, materi yang diangkat adalah articles dalam bahasa Inggris yang meliputi a, an, dan the. Tiga bagian materi dalam articles disampaikan kepada para siswa jenjang Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) di Paser dengan menerapkan Tri-N (niteni, niroke, dan nambahi). Oleh karenanya, tujuan utama abdimas yang dilaksanakan oleh tim adalah mengajarkan articles bagi siswa SMA di Paser dengan menggunakan Tri-N. Dalam pelaksanaannya, metode Tri-N tentunya terdiri dari tiga kegiatan yakni (1) kegiatan niteni yang merupakan kegiatan mengamati yang dilakukan oleh para siswa SMA; (2) kegiatan kedua adalah niroke yang merupakan kegiatan menirukan; dan (3) kegiatan nambahi yang merupakan kegiatan menambahi. Kegiatan-kegiatan tersebut dilaksanakan selama dua hari pada tanggal 19 – 20 Maret 2022 secara online melalui media Google Meet. Lebih lanjut, hasil yang diperoleh melalui kegiatan abdimas ini terdiri dari dua poin utama yakni: (1) keberhasilan para siswa dalam memahami dan menggunakan articles baik secara lisan maupun tulis; dan (2) kendala yang dihadapi oleh para siswa dalam memahami dan menggunakan articles.

Abstract

Tema dari kegiatan Abdimas ini adalah pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang dilakukan secara daring di Lamongan. Tema pengajaran bahasa Inggris dispesifikkan pada materi articles yang terdiri dari a, an, dan the. Materi tersebut diajarkan pada siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) di Lamongan dengan mengimplementasikan Tri-N (niteni, niroke, dan nambahi) sehingga tujuan dari kegiatan Abdimas ini adalah mengimplementasikan Tri-N dalam pengajaran articles bagi siswa SMA di Lamongan. Pelaksanaan pengajaran dalam kegiatan ini menggunakan metode Tri-N. Para siswa niteni atau mengidentifikasi penjelasan articles, niroke atau menirukan penjelasan dan kegiatan-kegiatan yang disajikan secara daring, dan nambahi atau menambahi penjelasan maupun kegiatan-kegiatan yang dilakukan secara daring terkait dengan articles. Sebelum menerapkan Tri-N, tim Abdimas melakukan pengamatan terhadap para siswa dan didapati bahwa kemampuan dalam memahami dan menggunakan articles secara lisan dan tulis perlu dikembangkan. Semua proses pengajaran dalam kegiatan ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan media Zoom. Adapun hasil dari Abdimas ini adalah: (1) para siswa mampu memahami articles; dan (2) mampu menggunakannya secara tulis dan lisan dalam bentuk frasa seperti an apple, a house, dan the sun.

Abstract

The study aims at exposing the discovery learning applied at high education. The study applies descriptive qualitative design applying phenomenology. The subjects in this study were 3 lecturers of a private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The data were gained from interviews and documentations. The data are analyzed using triangulation involving data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The analysis results show that there are benefits and challenges of discovery learning applied in higher education. In conclusion, discovery learning has been one of alternative teaching ways in higher education. Keywords: discovery learning, English language teaching, higher education
