Abstract

Liberal education generally believed that true education must be universal and free from indoctrinative practices. It is moving from liberal education principles that uphold the values that are vital to the moral and intellectual development of man, such as critical thinking, personal autonomy and pluralism of thought. However, when juxtaposed with other variants of educational paradigm promoted mainly by radicals and conservatives, it was not easy to be realized. Liberal education proved epistemologically partisan and incompletely sterile from practices of indoctrination.

Abstract

This study scrutinized the historical literacy of Generation Z (Gen Z) Muslims about the pandemic and its impact on Muslim worship practices. The pandemic has raised not only questions about health but also worship. Employing a qualitative approach that combined textual and fieldwork research, this study seeks to explain the historical literacy of Gen Z Muslims about the pandemic. It also explores the ways in which they respond to the diversity in Muslim worship practices during the pandemic and the extent to which their involvement increases their Islamic historical literacy. The study was carried out in Surabaya, involving several data collection methods, such as interviews, focused group discussions, and surveys. The study reveals that the historical literacy of Gen Z Muslims fell short of expectations. Furthermore, with regards to the impact of the pandemic on the adjustment of worship practices among Muslims in their community, Gen Z Muslims are divided into three groups: affirmative, negative, and ignorant. This study also shows that Gen Z Muslims have yet to be connected intensely with community networks that allow them to participate in and improve their historical literacy.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted religion. Provisions issued by religious authorities were imposed upon Indonesian Muslims to cope with. Various responses were identified representing how their religiosities negotiated. Here, direct participation in the implementation of Tarawih prayers in Surabaya was taken as a research unit. This study focused on (1) the diversity in negotiating religiosities amid the pandemic; (2) its underlying reasons; and (3) its potential implications. This qualitative research methodologically took a constructivist approach and phenomenological design by combining open-ended interviews, behavioral observations, and questionnaires in collecting data. The results demonstrated many factors playing a role in the shaping of diversity. They could include social, political, economic, and cultural considerations. The negotiation occurred through acceptance, resistance, and transformation embodying the tensions between logics of religion in addressing scientific contributions. The diversity of religious negotiation amid the outbreak subsequently confirmed the flexibility and adaptability of Islam in addressing historical dynamics.

Abstract

Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani is a prominent figure in Muslim society. Compared to the influence of his intellectual works, the revered status he has earned is in large part because of his known outstanding spiritual qualities. He enjoys a place of honor that can hardly be equaled by other scholars and saints in Islam. The spread of this respect for him is not only a local phenomenon in Indonesia but also found in other countries. From the practice of venerating the shaykh in various places, it is known that the tradition has a global and a local dimension in the religious structure of Muslims. This issue is investigated through a comparative approach of textual and field studies in Indonesia and Turkiye. The study concludes that the preservation of the tradition of honoring the shaykh is possible because of the existence of supporting factors, such as the legacy of in the forms of books or institutions, the spread of documents or manuals that commemorate the figure, the development of communities that respect and practice his teachings, the emergence of rituals or activities associated with the figure on a regular basis. By those factors, the veneration becomes a popular and deep-rooted tradition.

Abstract

People have various types of culture in each region of this archipelago. It cannot be denied that a culture and tradition actually has an entity that is created from people's belief in a story, whether myth or legend. This is what makes this phenomenon interesting to study further. The aim of this research is to explore the current state of the Tegalsari (Surabaya) area, the legendary story of Grandpa Kudo Kardono from both an emic and historical perspective, and the existence of Grandfather Kudo Kardono's offering place. This research uses historical research methods and an ethno-archaeological approach. Then it uses the structuralism theory of Levi-Strauss along with its supporting theories, namely the semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Peirce and the theory of cultural interpretation by Clifford Geertz as an analytical tool. The results of the research include: there are 7 elements of universal culture as stated by Koentjoroningrat in an area in Tegalsari, Surabaya; the legend of Kudo Kardono, who is believed by the public to be the Majapahir warlord who succeeded in defeating Ra Kuti, although his name is not recorded in history; and the Grandfather Kudo Kardono Islamic Boarding School is located on Jalan Cempaka No. 25 and has artifact symbols, characteristics and traditions in it.

Abstract

Abstract

The Ḥaḍramī people in Indonesia, popularly called ḥabā’ib, are those of Arab descent who have contributed to the history of this nation. Their same origin does not necessarily make this community homogeneous, especially when it comes to Islam and Indonesianness. The vibrant tones that characterize this diversity can even be traced back to the colonial era. One of them is related to the struggle for the influence of h}abā’ib’s religious politics in the public sphere. The recent growth of their authority at the national level has drawn attention and prompted a key inquiry about what infrastructure and superstructure are conducive and supportive for this to occur. A heuristic analysis is conducted to explore the issue. This study reveals that ḥabā’ib’s religious politics have grown in prominence in Indonesia because they have hospitable spaces to grow in accord with the construction of their identity as a social and religious elite group. Meanwhile, this phenomenon is difficult to develop in cultural settings that do not accommodate the expressions of supremacy based on race, ethnicity, or ancestry. The existence of cultural spaces with different inclinations in addressing h}abā’ib’s identity is still constitutionally permitted in Indonesia. Muslims have the wisdom as well as the resilience to manage the struggle for religious and political authority in their respective Islamic cultural environments. The state and government must continue to position themselves as the large tent for the diversity of their people.
