Abstract

Polypropylene (PP) is a synthetic, heat-resistant, plastic. This quality has made it the second most commonly used in everyday life, including in disposable medical face masks. While the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an escalation of the face masks use in the last two years, their abundant waste, which is difficult to decompose naturally, can have a negative impact on the environment and human health. The purpose of this study was to obtain isolates of PP decomposing bacteria from the landfill in Ngipik, Gresik. The isolates were obtained from soil samples in the landfill. Bacterial isolates were tested for their ability to degrade PP during the 28 days of the liquid phase. The data obtained were bacterial growth data and PP degradation. There were three isolates that had the potential to decompose PP, namely NG 1, NG 2, and NG 3. It was concluded that the NG2 bacterial isolate is able to decompose PP by 0.47%. Based on the results of 16S sRNA, these three tended to be in the genus of Bacillus. The results of this study are expected to enrich the data of potential local bacteria to decompose PP obtained from Gresik landfill areas.

Abstract

Filling station operators are employee who spend a lot of time outdoors exposed to fuel oil, dust and vehicle fumes. The filling station operator's work environment has risks to health, including anemia. Anemia is a condition that hemoglobin (Hb) levels in the blood below the minimum limit. This community service activity aims to provide anemia education and conduct Hb level screening for filling station operators in Gresik. Examination of the filling station operator's Hb level was carried out using a simple random sampling technique with a cross-sectional time approach. The number of respondents was as much as 69 filling station operators from 7 filling stations in Gresik. The results of examination of Hb levels showed that 11.6% of respondents had Hb levels below the minimum limit. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using the Fisher test, the results showed that there was no relationship between Hb levels of filling station operators and gender, age, length of work (years), duration of work (hours/week), and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Nonetheless, these four variables have a prevalence risk (PR) of anemia, namely gender (PR=2.347), age (PR=1.17), length of work (PR= 0.867) and duration of work (PR=1.240), so that operators filling stations have a risk of anemia. Administrative forms of prevention can be carried out with medical check-ups routine. Health education is also needed as a preventive measure to maintain employee health.

Abstract

Abstract

relatively shorter adult phase than the larval stage. The larval stage of this organism lives in piles of organic matter, including in piles of household waste. The ability of larvae to utilize organic matter in their environment is inseparable from the role of potential microbes that produce enzymes associated with their gut. This study aims to isolate, screen, and identify the potential bacteria in producing hydrolytic enzymes from gut of O. rhinoceros larvae. The third instar larvae were dissected aseptically to obtain gut bacterial isolates. The isolates were tested for their ability to produce amylase, cellulose, lipase, and protease using agar plate containing specific substrates. There were eight different isolates, and three of them had the ability to produce all four enzymes. The three isolates were identified as Bacillus. These results can be used as a reference for handling household organic waste.
