Abstract

There appears to be a generational gap between generations during the 4th vice-presidential candidate debate, which has the potential to be in the public spotlight during the 2024 election due to the instances of unethical communication of the candidate pairs. Three important points to be answered: First, explaining the dynamics of the debate in various perspectives between generations both visually and verbally (body language and diction used during rhetoric); Second, explaining the substance of the debate on communication ethics and verbal politeness in the context of the vice-presidential debate; Third, exploring the visual elements of both the visible and underlying aspects of the vice-presidential debate. A qualitative explanatory approach was employed in this research with data collection of YouTube video documentation categorised based on the concept of verbal politeness and the visual world according to the content analysis of the debate event video. The findings of the data display are associated with verbal politeness, ethics, and visual communication in the visual world (performance consisting of visible and invisible visual structures), which are based on the social culture and political reality of the vice-presidential candidates who have an important role in filling the gap between generations as a representation of the prospective leader of the nation. In conclusion, the communication process of debating requires ethics, self-control, represented in the polite attitudes and words of the three prospective leaders with the principles of mutual understanding, knowledge, self-control, humility, and wisdom. However, different generations do not need to underestimate or bring each other down. It is mandatory to have the principle of upholding equal human dignity so that the purpose of communication as information, persuasion, and education achieves the content of the message as a quality debate.

Abstract

Internalizing the values of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is crucial to explore further, especially in the context of Indonesia's diverse society. Various perspectives of young people in considering the 2024 presidential candidates in Indonesia have the potential to cause division. This article addresses three key points: firstly, the importance of internalizing the values of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika in creating a peaceful elections atmosphere; secondly, factors influencing the young generation’s responses to the 2024 elections; thirdly, implications of implementing the values of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika on the behavior of young voters in the 2024 elections. Using a mixed method approach, with data collected through surveys and analyzed qualitatively, this study revealed three key points. First, internalizing the values of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is essential to foster peaceful elections in 2024. Second, socializing the implementation of the values of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is one of factors that could influence the behavior of young voters in creating peaceful elections in 2024. Third, the internalization of these values could lead the young generation to adopt more inclusive and tolerant perspective on political issues. However, the complexity produced by mediatization do not fully reflect the high awareness of the values of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. Best practices for the young generation are expected to be able to implement the values of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika consistently in social life and the democratic process, including tolerance for differences of opinion, diversity, and harmony in various perspectives

Abstract

Abstract

The internalization of Pancasila values among the younger generation is significant for a more in-depth study ahead of the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia. This has become a hot issue as material for study, especially after the 2024 presidential and vice presidential candidate debate took place. This research aims at 3 things: First, to inform the importance of internalizing the Pancasila values among the younger generation to welcome the 2024 election; Second, to instill Pancasila values in the younger generation in responding to currently developing political dynamics; Third, to strengthen implementation of Pancasila values in political ethics by socializing them among the younger generation to realize peaceful elections in 2024.  The mixed method used for this research is quantitative data collection, using qualitative descriptive techniques with text analysis. The distribution of questionnaires conducted directly and online is based on the theory of social reality construction, with the concept of internalization being the focus. This research shows 3 things: First, the younger generation received information regarding the importance of internalizing Pancasila values in creating peaceful elections in 2024. Second, researchers succeeded in socializing the effort to instil Pancasila values in the younger generation in responding to political dynamics in the 2024 elections. Third, ethical politics in peaceful elections have been socialized by strengthening Pancasila values to make the situation more conducive to implementing peaceful elections. It is hoped that this research can become a consistent and sustainable national movement for the upcoming elections and prepare the younger generation to have a peaceful and constructive mentality.

Abstract

Abstract

Social media interactions play a significant role in shaping public opinion through narratives circulating within digital networks, which influence the reputation of the Indonesian National Police (Polri), both positively and negatively. This phenomenon became particularly visible following the implementation of Operation Ketupat 2025, which attracted public attention due to traffic congestion during the homecoming period and triggered widespread reactions from netizens on social media. This study analyzes the narrative network of Polri’s reputation on the Instagram account @korlantas.ntmc, aiming to identify key actors who occupy central positions in creating, shaping, and disseminating narratives. The research is grounded in the concepts of narrative analysis within social network analysis (SNA) and Instagram as a Social Network Site (SNS). A mixed-method approach with a qualitative descriptive emphasis was employed. Data were collected by identifying nodes and links from Instagram comments using IGcomment and analyzed with Gephi 0.10.1 to visualize the narrative network and assess reputation dynamics. The findings reveal two key actors based on degree, betweenness, and closeness centrality measurements in the post titled “Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives Habiburokhman: This is the Smoothest Homecoming in History.” These findings provide insights for future research on narrative networks and digital reputation management. To reduce negative public responses, Polri should consistently reflect the values of the nation’s four basic consensuses, encouraging more constructive and responsible discourse on social media.

Abstract

The 2024 Indonesian vice-presidential debate appears to feature more gimmicks than substantive discussions of the candidates’ visions and missions. This study aims to examine how the vice-presidential candidates reproduce socio-cultural values through their performances during the debate. Using Bourdieu’s theoretical framework of habitus (field, arena, and strategy), this research seeks to explore how the candidates construct the reproduction of socio-cultural values through their habitual practices. The study employs a qualitative method with text analysis as the primary data collection technique. The data analyzed consists of textual transcriptions from the fourth vice-presidential debate, broadcast on the official YouTube channel of the General Elections Commission (KPU) of the Republic of Indonesia, and used voyant.tools to determine dominant words from the comments. The findings indicate that the candidates’ habitus determines the type of socio-cultural reproduction displayed during the debate. The result of this research identified three key patterns: First, Attacking-question gimmicks reinforced dominance and control over debate narratives. Second, Emotional and satirical gimmicks provoked opponents and audiences while diverting attention from substantive content. Third, Youth-oriented gimmicks leveraged humor and relatability to attract younger voters. These performances reproduced a political reality that emphasized style over substance, signaling a shift toward performative politics in which image and symbolism dominate over ideas (knowledge), ethics, wisdom, and maturity in public speaking. This research is also relevant for researchers, political strategists, and media analysts.

Abstract

There appears to have been a shift in public opinion regarding President Prabowo’s Leadership. This study examines the network of public narratives about President Prabowo formed in the comments section of the official Instagram account @gerindra. With increased public discussion about the performance of the Prabowo-Gibran administration, Instagram has become the main space for the public to express opinions, offer suggestions, and evaluate government policies. This study aims to analyze the public narrative network in the comments section of the @gerindra Instagram account. It uses a post-positivist paradigm with a mixed-methods approach and analyzes three posting periods (November 15, 2023), the election period (February 17, 2024), and one year in office (October 20, 2025). Data were collected using IGcomment.com; dominant narratives were mapped using Voyant Tools; narrative forms were examined using Nvivo; and narrative networks were visualized using Gephi 0.10.1. The results show that public narratives change over time and across political situations, and that key actors construct narrative content in the comment section. These findings indicate that the Instagram comment section @gerindra is the leading platform for the public to build narratives and opinions, as well as evaluate government performance. Further research is expected to discuss the habits of social media users through the actors involved.

Abstract

There has been dynamic in the transition of the use of media by news readers from conventional media (Kompas print media) to new media (Kompas.com and KompasTV Instagram account). This causes a  change in the communication process starting from  the way of producing, delivering, capturing, and disseminating news as well as the content of the news itself which is different from people's habits earlier. The originality of this paper builds on the main ideas constructed from the theory of Uses and Gratification by focusing more on three aspects; audience, media (news content), and function of the media. This study uses a qualitative method with a constructivist analysis and a news content analysis unit that focuses on Kompas.com and KompasTV Instagram account at  the onset of Covid-19 pandemic  in March 2020 in Indonesia by mapping news content based on keywords for the Covid-19 pandemic and the Corona virus news search. This study found that the reading interest  among the Indonesian people is more inclined to news that has an audio-visual format than the newspaper format. This is evident from the audience’s  feedback in the comment section compiled from data findings. In addition, the lack of the audience’s  control results in  the poor communication culture among the people, so that there is a  potential for media bias and fake news. This study has limitations in  that it does not discuss the reader interest from the perspective of conventional news (Kompas print media). Therefore, there should be further comprehensive research by comparing the two types of media.
