Abstract

Cake application is an English learning application that aims to improve student learning activities in English. This application provides speaking, writing, listening, and reading features. There are several features in this application such as watching short movie and practicing speaking by using dialogue. The aimed of this research was to find out whether there is a significant difference of students’ speaking skill between before and after using Cake application at the Eleventh Grade of Senior High School 14 Pekanbaru. The researcher formulated the problems into three research questions that would be answering by using quantitative research. This research was a pre-experimental research. The total population was 422 students. The classes chosen as the sample was XI IPA 7 by using a convenience sampling technique which the total of sample were 36 students’. In collecting the data, the researcher used speaking test to determine students’ speaking skill. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Wilcoxon signed Ranks Test formula calculated by SPSS 23 version. Based on analysis of the t-test formula, the sig. value is 0.000. It could be stated that 0.000 had less value than 0.05, then Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. So it can be concluded that there was a significant difference of students’ speaking skill between before and after using Cake application at the Eleventh Grade of Senior High School 14 Pekanbaru.

Abstract

This research comprises one variable, how is students’ ability in arranging jumbled words into simple present sentences at State Vocational High School 1 Pendalian IV Koto. The research aimed to knowing the students’ ability in arranging jumbled words into simple present sentences especially tenth grade of State Vocational High School 1 Pendalian IV Koto. The design of this research is descriptive quantitative. The research used quantitative data, where the students were assessed by their score. The total population is 90 students consist of 4 classes that are TKJ 1: 21 students, TKJ 2: 21 students, AKT 1: 23 students, and AKT 2: 25 students. This research used cluster sampling and get of class AKT 1: 23 students. The instrument of the research was test (arranging jumbled words) consist 20 questions. In collecting the data of the research, the researcher used written test by duration 45 minutes. Based on the result of the research, there were 1 student on Very Good category (4.34%), 3 students on Good category (13.04%), 7 students on Enough category (30.43%), and 12 students on Less category (52.17%). Based on the average value, the students’ ability in arranging jumbled words into simple present sentences in the tenth grade of Vocational High School 1 Pendalian IV Koto is included in the less category.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of using short stories on the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at Junior High School 3 Pintu Gobang Kari. The research was motivated by students' low reading interest and limited reading comprehension skills in English texts. The method used was a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 22 students from class VIII-1 selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests administered before and after the short story-based treatment. The results showed a significant improvement in post-test scores after the treatment. This was supported by a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.032 < 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of short stories has a significant positive effect on students’ reading comprehension. Short stories are proven to be an effecttive and enjoyable medium for enhancing students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

The use of appropriate strategy in teaching speaking is always becoming an expected thing by the teacher because this strategy can help him bring the students toward the success of the teaching. Problem- solving strategy is known as one of the best one in teaching speaking. By knowing and understanding the concepts of problem- solving, the teacher feels helped to develop this strategy into activities supporting the improvement of students’ speaking ability. Selecting the appropriate situations of the problem- solving will motivate the students to speak and find the solution of the problem discussed.

Abstract

This research aimed to obtaining the data on students’ ability in writing recount text at Islamic Boarding School Daarun Nahdhah Thawalib Bangkinang. This research is a descriptive study consisting of one variable. The researcher used quantitative research. The subjects of this research were students of class XI at Islamic Boarding School Daarun Nahdhah Thawalib Bangkinang, while the object of this research was the students’ ability in writing recount text. The researcher used cluster sampling to take samples, there were 20 students as a sample of 131 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used a test as an instrument and measure by using composition of writing, then analyze using students’ classification. Based on data analysis, the researcher found that the average score of students in writing recount text was 63.33, the lowest score was 54.16, the highest score was 77.08 and the total score was 1266.60. Based on the students’ average scores, this research means that the students’ ability in writing recount text is categorized into a sufficient level.

Abstract

Reading comprehension plays a crucial role in English learning. However, the eleventh-grade students at State Senior High School 1 Rangsang Barat, Kepulauan Meranti, still struggled to identify main ideas and detailed information, and comprehensively understand the text. The skimming technique is considered as effective strategy because it allows students to quickly gain an overview of the text and find specific information. This research aimed at finding out the effect of skimming technique on students’ reading comprehension. A quantitative approach was used in this research with pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 26 eleventh-grade students of class 1. Data were collected through multiple-choice test tested its validity and reliability. The results of analysis using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test showed a significant increase in student reading comprehension. The pre-test mean score 49.54 increased to 72.62 in the post-test. The score of significance of t-test was 0.000 (p<0.05), so H0 was rejected, and H1 was accepted. Thus, the use of skimming technique was proven to have a positive and significant effect on student reading comprehension ability, so it was recommended to be implemented in reading learning at Senior High School level.
