Abstract

Runoff is one of flood and erosion causal factor in Indonesia. Runoff occurred when rainfall cannot be infiltrated and flowed on the ground surface. Cidanau watershed has quite high rainfall average (2573 mm/year) so it has high runoff potential. Zero Runoff System (ZROS) is one of water conservation way which can infiltrate runoff to the ground using permeation structures. ZROS’s successful parameter in order to decreasing runoff rate can be observed by the soil water content differences before and after ZROS application. Soil water content estimation was conducted by water balance model with and without runoff and then it is compared with soil water content from measuring. The simulation results indicated that soil water content in the research field before and after ZROS application is 0.476 and 0.569 m3/m3 respectively. The simulation is also conducted for past 10 years (2004-2013) and resulted higher soil water content if ZROS were applied. This results indicates that ZROS capable to decrease and permeate runoff to the ground and then increase soil water content level. Water balance model with and without runoff has coefficient of determination (R2) 0.606. It means that this model could simulate the soil water content differences before and after ZROS application valid relatively.

Abstract

Kata kunci: biodegradasi, hidrokarbon aromatik polisiklik, mikroorganisme, proses metabolisme.ABSTRACTPolycylic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are derived from natural processes and the anthropogenic wastes in the environment. PAHs are pollutants found in the air, soil, and sediments which are developed due to incomplete combustion of the organic materials. This review provides a more detail literature study regarding the microbial growth, the metabolic process, and PAHs microbial biodegradation processes overview. The process of PAHs and the hydrophobic substrate degradation is applied to limit the amount of dissolved aqueous phase through sorption, crystalline, and non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) so that the dissolved PAHs are no longer available. microbial growth on PAHs as the sole carbon source can be divided into three phases which are the exponential phase, the advance phase with pseudo-linear growth, and pseudo-stationery phase in a non-ideal condition based on the characteristic of the unlimited bacterial access and the homogenous substrate transport. In the heterogeneous medium, such as soil, PAHs are absorbed into the organic particles of small sized pores so that the PAHs become inaccessible for the soil bacteria. In large scale pollution, the PAHs are in the form of tar droplets which limit the access for soil bacteria to degrade the PAHs. Other than bacteria, the specific organisms and microorganisms to degrade PAHs are found in fungi, cyanobacteria, and algae. Keywords: biodegradation, growth rate, metabolic process, microbial, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.Citation: Kurniawan A., Wirasembada, Y.C., Razaad, I.M.N., Novriansyah, A., Rafi, M., Effendi, A.J.(2018). Abstract

AbstractOn non-irrigated farming land, soil water content was difficult to be maintained in field capacity condition. Zero runoff system (ZROS) attempted to utilize runoff and to convert it to backup soil water content using permeation structures. The objectives of this research was to analyze the changing of soil water content before and after ZROS had been applied and to calculate ZROS effectivity towards infiltrating rainfall. In this research, permeation structures in the research field was usingsilt pit and collector canal. The changing of soil water content before and after ZROS application was calculated by water balance model in therooting zone. The simulation result showed that after ZROS had been applied, the decreasing of soil water content in research field were ranging from -0.001 to -0.009 m3/m3, while before ZROS had been appliedit were ranging from -0.01 to -0.024 m3/m3. Besides that, ZROS also capable to increase soil water content in research field for 25.57%. The increasing of this soil water content was caused by ZROS ability that canhold and infiltrate 51.04% from total rainfall occurredeffectively. Keywords: permeation structure, runoff, soil water content, water balance model, zero runoff systemAbstrakPada lahan non irigasi, kadar air tanah sulit dipertahankan pada kondisi kapasitas lapang dan sangat tergantung pada curah hujan. Diterima: 07 Mei 2014; Disetujui: 19 Agustus 2014

Abstract

Anaerobic digestion is a well-known biological treatment process. It uses less energy, consumes fewer nutrients, converts organic pollutants into methane gas, and produces a small quantity of biomass. The interactions among the various microbes in this complex biological system need to be better understood, and as a consequence, mathematical models need to be revised. This review discusses the principles of biokinetic models published in the literature on anaerobic fermentation as part of the anaerobic digestion process for waste-activated sludge. Biokinetic models for anaerobic fermentation have been developed to predict cell growth, substrate consumption, and gas production. This exploration delves into the incorporation of the hydrolysis stage, a multi-step process entailing the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids within existing biokinetic models. Because there is no single analytical method for accurately determining the biokinetics of anaerobic fermentation of waste-activated sludge incorporating hydrolysis parameters and inhibition effects are proposed to improve the estimated trends of process variables as a function of the design variables.

Abstract

Indonesia’s palm oil industry generates large volumes of palm oil mill effluent (POME) characterized by high organic load and suspended solids, requiring effective treatment. This study evaluates a continuous hybrid system consisting of a kapok fiber(KF) pre-treatment unit, electrocoagulation (EC) reactor, and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR), operated under varying plate materials (Fe, Al, Cu) at 24 V and 10 A. The system treated raw POME (pH 3.4; sCOD 20,796 mg/L; TSS 25,610 mg/L; oil and grease 3,243mg/L) over 10-day operational cycles per condition. Results show that copper electrodes achieved the highest performance, with sCOD removal up to 66% and oil and grease removal up to 81.38%, alongside improved TSS reduction. The KF unit contributed 46–53% oil and grease removal, while EC primarily reduced suspended solids and adjusted pH, supporting stable MBBR performance. The combined configuration highlights the interaction between physicochemical and biological processes, where electrode selectionand pre-treatment significantly influence overall system efficiency. These findings provide insight into optimizing integrated treatment strategies for high-strength POME, although additional polishing steps are still required to meet discharge standards.
