Abstract

Interpretation on the Qur’an has faced stagnation for using textual paradigm in exploring the meaning of the Qur’an. Since then, the developing social problems can’t find the solutions from the Qur’an, even those are forced to apply the meaning of the Qur’an interpreted in classical context. In contemporary era, there is shifting paradigm in interpretation, which is not merely focused on textual meaning, but has started to seek for textual meaning of the Qur’an by using hermeneutics. However, a number of theories on hermeneutics show their subjectivism in relation with the ideas developed by contemporary Muslim scholars. This comes from their distinguished social and intellectual conditions, especially their concern in looking at their surrounding condition. Most of scholars in hermeneutics offered new theories focused on method of interpretation. Here, Khaled M. Abou El Fadl, an exponent on hermeneutics, offered his hermeneutical thought in criticizing the concept of authority in interpreting the Qur’an. This study aims to explain the ideas of Khaled M. Abou El Fadl in Hermeneutics and Islamic Law, his social and intellectual context as the background of his idea.

Abstract

This article studies al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī’s viewpoints toward understanding hadith on his work “Nawādir al-Uṣūl fi Ma’rifat Aḥādīth al-Rasūl.” Using the content analysis approach, this study reveals that the primary purpose of transmitting hadith is that the hadith’s message is supposed to be practiced so that happiness in the hereafter can be achieved, not just transmitting hadith from one person to another without any practical implication. So, it not only orients on the chain of transmission but also profoundly understands the matan or its contents. He quotes some hadith in his works to expose the meaning and the essence contained in every hadith and hopes that it can be a guideline of sulūk for those who intend to get closer (taqarrub) to God. Hence, the Sufism viewpoint becomes his basic epistemology in understanding the hadith.Contribution: This article provides a new perspective of the hadith transmitter requirement according to al-Tirmidhī, namely, having a critical view towards everything that is heard and accepted. It also shows that understanding hadith is not just to reveal its meaning but a sulūk for those who want to get closer to Allah.

Abstract

The community service program in Kartikajaya Village aims to utilize local economic potential by making mangrove planting a tourist attraction. The village has suitable geographical conditions for ecotourism development, but the lack of community awareness and understanding of the benefits of mangroves is a major challenge. The program involves the local community in mangrove planting and maintenance activities, as well as providing education on the importance of mangroves in maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems and increasing the village's tourism attractiveness. The results of this program showed an increase in community awareness of the importance of environmental conservation, as well as an increase in the number of tourist visits to the village. Thus, mangrove planting not only serves as an environmental conservation effort, but can also make a positive contribution to the economy of the surrounding community through the development of river cruising ecotourism.

Abstract

The popular interpretation of Qs. al-Fātiḥah [1]: 6-7 is that al-maghḍūb and al-ḍāllīn refer to Jews and Christians. In the extremist view, this interpretation is used to justify jihād against perceived enemies of Islam. This study, using the content analysis method, explores the counter-narrative to extremism in Tafsīr al-Fātiḥah by Abu Nur Jazuli Amaith. The primary source of this study is Jazuli’s Tafsīr al-Fātiḥah. The results of this study are twofold: Firstly, the main idea of Qs. al-Fātiḥah is that guidance is God’s prerogative. Therefore, it is wrong to be intolerant and fanatical towards other religious communities simply because they do not align with Islamic values and teachings. Secondly, the counter-narrative to extremism in Tafsīr al-Fātiḥah is an effort to reframe the understanding that those who are astray and incur wrath are not only Jews and Christians, but also Muslims who deviate from truth and act extremely. These findings contribute to the understanding that Islam does not belittle other religious communities but criticizes their acts and traits. This idea can encourage Muslims to be more moderate and tolerant towards outsiders while remaining critical of insiders.

Abstract

This study examines the significance of ṣalawat ashghil as embodied in the non-violent resistance of the Wadas residents in Purworejo against the construction of the Bener dam. Contrary to the common perception that religion and environmental activism are separate spheres, the people of Wadas demonstrate how religious expression can be closely intertwined with ecological protest. By employing resistance theory and a phenomenological approach, this qualitative research investigates how the recitation of ṣalawat ashghil functions as a form of religious resistance. The findings reveal that this non-violent resistance is deeply rooted in the community’s understanding of the Qur’an and hadīth, embodying what can be described as a lived interpretation of these texts. The villagers attribute spiritual power and protective efficacy to the practice of ṣalawāt ashghīl, viewing it as a means of confronting injustice. Drawing on James C. Scott’s theory of resistance, their actions constitute a subtle yet enduring form of dissent that operates without overt confrontation with dominant power structures. This case offers an alternative framework for understanding Islamic resistance by illustrating how devotional practices can serve as potent vehicles for socio-environmental critique.
