Abstract

Papaya leaf extract could be used as an organic corrosion inhibitor. Corrosion inhibitors were used as a method to reduce corrosion rate. The most corrosive environment was the marine environment. The purpose of this study was to determine the best concentration of papaya (Carica papaya) leaf extract inhibitor which could reduce the corrosion rate of low carbon steel in a 3.56% NaCl solution environment. The maceration process was carried out for 24 hours with 70% ethanol solvent with a solute:solvent ratio of 1:8 (w/v) at room temperature. Inhibitor extracts were analyzed qualitatively with the phytochemical method. The addition of FeCl3 was carried out on the inhibitor extract from papaya leaves. The color change occurred from blackish brown to greenish black which indicated the presence of tannin compounds in the papaya leaf extract. Corrosion testing was carried out with hot stream temperature setting at 45⁰C to 55⁰C and concentrations of inhibitor extracts at 300, 600, and 900 ppm. The test was conducted for 36 hours with a span of metal mass every 6 hours. Corrosion rate calculation is done by weight loss method. The results showed that papaya leaf extract inhibitors positive contained corrosion inhibitor and could reduce the corrosion rate in 3.56% NaCl solution. The corrosion rate without inhibitor is 1.023 mmpy. Corrosion rates with inhibitor concentrations of 300, 600, and 900 ppm were 0.755, 0.585, and 0.438 mmpy, respectively.

Abstract

Water hyacinth contains antioxidants such as lignin, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids that can bind to metals to form a protective layer as an organic inhibitor in the corrosion proses. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of antioxidants in water hyacinth extract which can reduce the corrosion rate of metals. The maceration process was carried out with a feed: methanol ratio of 1:9 (w/v). The types of antioxidant compounds were tested using the phytochemical method while the antioxidant activity was tested using the FRAP method. Steel corrosion testing uses the coupon method with a corrosion time of 5 days in air, rainwater, and tap water. The yield of the extract was 72.80%. Based on the results of the phytochemical and FRAP tests, the positive extract contained antioxidant compounds, namely alkaloids, tannins and saponins with an antioxidant concentration of 296.55 ppm. Organic inhibitors that showed the highest inhibition efficiency were at a concentration of 75 ppm with a value of 94.52% in tap water media, 65.53% in air media, and 52.96% in rainwater media.

Abstract

Textile industry wastewater contains organic and inorganic pollutants which could be indicated byrelatively high levels of COD, BOD5, turbidity. If this waste water was directly discharged into the environment, it would pollute the environment and endanger human health and other living things. Textile industry wastewater treatment with electrocoagulation method aimed to replace or save chemicals as coagulants and flocculants that could cause environmental pollution and the price continues to increase. Wastewater treatment with this method could produce wastewater or treatment effluent with levels of COD, turbidity, heavy metals, pH below or at least equal to the environmental quality standard (BML) Research results on textile wastewater treatment using Fe and Al and SS (Stainless) electrodes Steel) at a current density of 0.25 to 1.25 A/dm2 with a processing time of 35 minutes obtained COD levels with a process efficiency greater than 80% and turbidity levels with greater efficiency 90%.
