Abstract

This research examines the philosophical meanings of motifs and colors in Javanese batik that has undergone acculturation with Chinese culture from coastal to inland areas. The research focuses on batik from Pekalongan, Lasem, as well as Demak and Kudus. Using a qualitative approach and discourse analysis, this study reveals how batik motifs and colors reflect the fusion of Javanese and Chinese cultural values. The results show that acculturation is reflected in motifs such as hong birds (phoenix), dragons, butterflies, and chrysanthemums in coastal batik, while in inland areas it is seen in Sudagaran batik. In terms of color, Chinese influence is evident in the use of getih pitik red (chicken blood), beer bottle green, and dark blue in Lasem batik, as well as bright color combinations such as red, yellow, and green in Pekalongan batik. The philosophical meanings in these motifs and colors represent values of luck, prosperity, balance, and harmony believed in Chinese culture, while adapting to Javanese aesthetic values.

Abstract

This community service program aims to support the preservation of traditional cultural arts by digitalizing the Panji Asmorobangun masks at Padepokan Asmorobangun in Malang Regency. This digitalization effort focuses on enhancing the visibility and appreciation of Malang’s traditional mask art, which faces challenges related to limited public access and engagement. Employing the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate), the program produces a digital catalog and a 3D virtual reality (VR) model of 74 Panji Asmorobangun masks. Each phase of the ADDIE model provides a systematic framework, beginning with a needs analysis of the padepokan's challenges, followed by catalog design and visual recording of the masks using PolyCam. This process yields interactive 3D representations accessible online to the public. The implementation results indicate that digitalization effectively expands the reach of traditional arts on digital platforms. Ongoing evaluations ensure the program’s sustainability. This digitalization initiative is a critical step in preserving the relevance of traditional mask art through modern technology, retaining core cultural values while inspiring sustainable efforts to preserve local cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study investigates teachers and students’ perceptions toward English instruction for international class program in Study Program of English, Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya in Indonesia. This study examines two issues: (1) students’ perception about the international class program and (2) students’ perception about English as a medium of instruction in the international program (bilingual or monolingual approach). This study employs quantitative method; Likert-scale survey with 34 university learners at undergraduate program participating in this study. The results revealed that learners were highly satisfied with the program and expecting more of monolingual approach than bilingual approach in the L2 classroom. It is recommended that the program have a minimum requirement of English proficiency to enroll in this program. It is expected that the results will provide a recommedation for policy maker to better generate an international class programs in the future.

Abstract

Novel Dari Dalam Kubur karya Soe Tjen Marching menggambarkan pengalaman penyintas tragedi 1965 serta diskriminasi etnis Tionghoa di Indonesia. Melalui kisah tokoh-tokohnya, novel ini menyoroti persoalan trauma, ingatan, dan ketidakadilan yang dialami kelompok yang terpinggirkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap representasi ingatan kolektif penyintas tragedi 1965 dan diskriminasi etnis Tionghoa dalam novel Dari Dalam Kubur dengan menggunakan pendekatan strukturalisme genetik Lucien Goldmann. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan objek material berupa novel Dari Dalam Kubur dan objek formal berupa representasi ingatan kolektif penyintas serta diskriminasi etnis Tionghoa sebagaimana terefleksikan dalam teks. Data dikumpulkan melalui studi pustaka dan dianalisis melalui empat tahap: pembacaan struktur teks, pencarian homologi dengan struktur sosial, identifikasi subjek kolektif, serta interpretasi pandangan dunia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tokoh-tokoh dalam novel mengalami dilema antara mengingat dan melupakan, yang mencerminkan kondisi nyata penyintas yang dipaksa bungkam. Diskriminasi terhadap etnis Tionghoa ditampilkan sebagai kebijakan negara yang menindas dan diperkuat oleh segregasi sosial. Pemilihan pendekatan strukturalisme genetik didasarkan pada kemampuannya menjembatani karya sastra dengan konteks sosial-historis. Teori ini lebih diterima karena tidak hanya menelaah struktur teks, tetapi juga mengungkap homologi antara novel dan realitas penyintas, sehingga pandangan dunia kolektif dapat diidentifikasi secara lebih komprehensif. Kesimpulan penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa novel Dari Dalam Kubur merepresentasikan pandangan dunia penyintas: ingatan sebagai perlawanan, dan identitas sebagai martabat yang harus dipertahankan.
