Abstract

The aims of this study are to describe the kinds of figure of speech and discover the existence of figure of speech that is delivered by Hula-hula, boru, and dongan tubu in Toba Batak saur matua ceremony. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive. The data were the utterances gathered from umpasa that are delivered by Hula-hula, boru, and dongan tubu of 3 Toba Batak saur matua ceremonies in Rantau prapat and Tarutung. The data analyzed by using theory of descriptive analysis. from identifying the data that are needed for this research, classifying the data based on the theory of figures of speech and analyzing the data based on the theories that were used. The findings are there were 7 out of 10 kinds of figure of speech were found in the umpasa of Toba Batak saur matua ceremony. The most dominant figure of speech in Toba Batak saur matua ceremony was simile. Toba Batak people tent to deliver umpasa through simile which compared between two dissimilar things by using the comparative term (like, as) and described to the first qualities of the second of invest the first with connotations inherent in the other. Keyword: Figurative Language, Toba Batak, Saur matua ceremony

Abstract

This study discusses about language use occurred by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study are male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The data are the utterances produced by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. This research focuses on the show broadcasted on October 2016 by taking 4 videos randomly. The objective of this study is to describe kinds of the language use uttered by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The findings showed that the kinds of language use consist of 6 parts. The dominant language use uttered by male host is expletive, because male’s utterances are frequently stated in a negative connotation. On the other hand, female host utterances are found in specialized vocabulary as the most dominant because female host has more interest in talking family affairs, such as the education of children, clothes, cooking, and fashion, etc. Women also tended to talk about one thing related to the home and domestic activities. However, the representation of language use uttered by male and female are deficit, dominance and different. Keywords: Language Use, Gender, Talk Show

Abstract

This research is aimed to explore the cognitive function of metaphor in Jesus teaching in Lukas verses in parables. The research applies the Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The data is taken from fourteen verses of Lukas chapter 12 verse 35 to 48. The data analysis is applying the Creswell data analysis Hierarchal Data Analysis Technique. The data shows cognitive functions of Jesus’ Teachings to Bible’s readers. The data analysis revealed, there are 36 metaphors used. These metaphors are classified into categories of structural metaphors, ontological metaphors and orientational metaphors. The data show that Lukas chapter 12 verse 35 to 48 use the three cognitive function of metaphors, structural function, ontological function and orientational function. There is also with one additional function that there is metaphor formed as structural function but functioned as ontological function. And then, the metaphors are motivated by the similarity of experience between the metaphor and the back ground of the verses. Keywords: Conceptual Metaphors, Lukas Verses, Cognitive Function

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the types of translation procedures in Patient Information Leaflets, to describe the realization of translation procedures and to explain about the reason of certain translation procedures realized in Patient Information Leaflets.The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study was translation unit that consists of words, phrases, clauses and sentences in Patient Information Leaflets in two versions, English as the source text and Bahasa Indonesia as the target text. The data was analyzed by using the theory of Translation Procedures based on (Vinay and Darbelnet, 2000) to find the types, realization and the reason of certain translation procedures were used in Patient Information Leaflets. The results of the study were; there were eight types of translation procedures in patient information leflets namely borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalent, deletion and mixing procedures, there were some realization of translation procedures in patient information leaflets, and there were seven reasons behind the realization of translation procedures. Keywords: Translation, Translation Procedures, Patient Information Leaflets, English and Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the pragmatics acquisition of five-years old Indonesian children in casual conversation. The objectives of this descriptive qualitative research were to: (1) find the type of the pragmatics acquired by a five-years-old child, (2) to find out the way of how do the five years old Indonesian children acquired  the pragmatics in casual conversation, and (3) to find out the reason of why do the five years old Indonesian children acquired  the pragmatics in this way. The data were obtained from three Indonesian boy children who lived in Batakness environment where most of their friends spoke in Batakness language. This study was located at lintongnihuta, Humbang Hasundutan regency. In collecting the data. this study applied documentation with audio visual recorder as the instrument of collecting the data. The technique of data analysis used in this study was descriptive technique, and the data were described trough the process of transcribing the data and reducing the data by the process of selecting, focusing, simplifying and transforming the transcripts of the data, after that, displaying the data and at last drawing the conclusions. The finding indicates that the subject of this study had mastered pragmatics, were the types of pragmatics acquired are exchange structures, turn taking, repairs, and cohesion. While the most dominant pragmatics used was turn taking. The way of  five years-old Indonesian children acquire the pragmatics in casual conversation were by united the environment’s effect, culture, habits, mood, and their focus on their own mind, needs, and what they were thinking about. And the dominant affected by focusing to their mind only. Then based on the interview with their parents and other caregivers, it’s found that the reason of using pragmatics in highest frequency were because the children often focused to the things in their mind only.Keywords: Pragmatics, Acquisition, Indonesian Children, Casual Conversation

Abstract

The purposes of the study is to describe about the experiential realization through transitivity analysis in classroom discourse, and only concerns with  one  component  of  the  metafunctions   that is the experiential meaning. The problem investigated in this study are (1) The transitivity processes used by the teachers in English classroom context; (2) the description of processes realized by teachers in the classroom context; and (3) the field of discourse in which the processes are realized in the classroom context. This study is data -based with descriptive qualitative and quantitative in nature and the method is observational. The location of the sudy were in 2 schools,and the subjects of the study are 3 English teachers from both  schools in Aceh tamiang 2016. In collecting the data, this study is used a means of audio-visual  recording and transcriptions, and  analyzed by  employing  Interactive Model. The result of the study from  data analysis with total of  clauses produced by 3 teachers each two sessions are 2175 clauses. It gained 726 clauses of Material Process (33.38%), followed by behavioural process gained 425 clauses (19.54%), relational process gained 296 clauses (13.60%), existantial process gained 287 clauses (13.19%), mental process gained 250 clauses (11.49 %), and verbal process gained 191 clauses (8.78 %).Keywords: Classroom Discourse, Process of Transitivity,  Systemic Functional Linguistic

Abstract

This study explained the Li Niha Maintenance among Teenagers of OrahuaMahasiswaNias (OMN) Medan in Kelurahan Lauci Medan Tuntungan. The objectives were (1) to investigate what maintenance of Li Niha is preserved by the Nias teenagers of OMN Medan (2)to describe how is the Li Niha maintained by the Nias teenagers of OMN Medan (3) to explain the reason why is the Li Niha maintained by the Nias teenagers of OMN Medan. This study applied phenomenological design as a part of qualitative research design. Data were words or utterances of 20 persons teenager of OMN Medan collected through observation and interview techniques. The data were analyzed by using Bogdan & Biklen, (1992). The findings of this study showed that: (1) four types of Li Niha maintenance preserved by the teenagers of OMN Medan namely strong, dominant, moderate and weak maintenance; (2) four ways of Li Niha maintained by Nias teenagers of OMNMedan,; and (3) five reasons the teenagers of Orahua Mahasiswa Nias (OMN) Medan  in Kelurahan Lauci Medan Tuntungan maintain Li Niha. Keywords: Language Shift, Maintenance, Intermarriage, Qualitative
