Abstract

Rumah Gadang is a traditional building that represents the cultural identity of Minangkabau Tribe in West Sumatera. This traditional building is a cultural heritage that must be preserved. However, preservation led to many changes in the form and space of traditional buildings. Rumah Gadang which is located in Kampung Adat Balai Kaliki, Payakumbuh City West Sumatera has a level of change in minor and major. That matter could happen because of differences in the network of actor relations in each building. The factor of actor relations has an impact to change the preservation of traditional buildings, thus providing a new perspective on the preservation of traditional buildings. Therefore, this research aims to observe the changes that occur in the Rumah Gadang located in Kampung Adat Balai Kaliki through actor network’s perspective. Completion of this research using a qualitative methodology with Actor Network Theory (ANT) method by examining changes that occur in Rumah Gadang holistically, which is through a study the relations between the actors involved in that building to discorver the factors that cause the changes. This research find that the relation of actors involved in each Rumah Gadang determines the quantity of building changes. The result is charted using sosiotechnogram to know the strong actors in actor relations from each Rumah Gadang. Therefore, this research could be the basis for appropriate practices of preserving Rumah Gadang traditional building.

Abstract

Design intervention in the craft sector is one of the issues that continues to grow in design studies. Ranging from the studies on the co-design process between the designers and crafters to the focus on the wider sociocultural context that influences the craft development process. Recently in Indonesia, design interventions in the craft sector are often carried out under the government policies or initiatives to bring designers and crafters to collaborate. In this study, we focus on one of Indonesia government's policies, namely Designer Dispatch Service Program, to develop craft products in various locations in Indonesia through a design approach. One of the outstanding features of this program is the instrument consists of the organizational form, timeline, and regular evaluation meetings, to control and monitor the collaboration process of designers and crafters. Using the descriptive approach to dissect the interaction between each actor and the policy instruments, we found that each actor continuously adjusts the instrument accordingly to their concern and motivation regarding the policy goals. There are also unspoken goals of each actor which are less concerned about the products being exported. Finally, this study shows that despite the top-down policy being well carried out, we found ambivalent attitudes of the actors by continuously descripting the design process which was set by the policy.

Abstract

Lontar is distributed in various areas of Indonesia, especially in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Over the past few years, lontar weaving in East Flores has experienced rapid development in various aspects. This research is conducted to analyze the dynamics that emerge in the community and formulate further stages of exploration by considering relevant aspects. This research used a mixed methods approach, first conducting qualitative research based on field observations in three villages in East Flores, and simple material exploration and experimentation. The results of this research are the design of a production system, a study of factors that influence the development of lontar material products and their impact on local communities, alternative product design, and an overview of the growth of local communities in Indonesia and how they can work together with other parties outside their region.

Abstract

Preserving cultural artifacts is essential for safeguarding heritage and advancing art and design research. Conventional documentation methods often fail to capture the intricate physical and material details of artifacts. This study explores the use of three-dimensional scanning technologies, such as Structured Light Scanning (SLS), Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and photogrammetry, as an effort to digitally archive cultural artifacts. These techniques generate detailed digital models that accurately represent the artifacts’ shapes, dimensions, and material properties. The digital models undergo refinement in Blender, a 3D modeling software, to reduce polygon counts, repair deformations, and optimize textures. The refined models are then integrated into a virtual platform developed with Unreal Engine. This platform provides immersive experiences through virtual reality (VR), enabling audiences to explore and interact with the artifacts in realistic virtual environments. Additionally, the VR environment offers insights into spatial contexts, such as the placement of objects and their proportional relationships within traditional settings. By exploring various 3D scanning methods, the study offers recommendations for selecting appropriate techniques based on specific needs and field conditions. The findings emphasize the importance of accurate scanning and post-processing to ensure artifacts are usable in VR. This approach ensures optimal viewing performance and creates culturally immersive experiences that connect users to their historical origins.

Abstract

Indonesia has yet to ratify the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol, which has led to various challenges for refugees in Indonesia, ranging from uncertain legal status to limited access to basic services. The conventional approaches offered through available solutions often fail to address and meet the needs of refugees. Mental health issues among refugees in Indonesia, particularly among young refugees, have become a major concern, stemming from traumatic experiences faced in their home countries, during the transition to transit countries like Indonesia, challenges in adapting to new environments, and the rejection experienced due to negative stigma. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health disorders are common, yet access to mental health support remains severely limited. Furthermore, the stigma surrounding mental health further hinders individuals like young refugees from seeking help. This results in young refugees losing motivation to continue their daily lives in transit countries like Indonesia. The Crafting Your Utopia through Paper Doll workshop aims to harness the strength of imagination and creativity among young refugees to inspire them to explore their potential and strengthen their vision for the future through paper doll activities (bepe-bepean). This workshop encourages participants to collaboratively build their ideal utopia. This utopia is not defined by beauty or sophistication but is an ideal vision created by the strength and self-potential, as well as the support gained from the diverse visions and abilities of young refugees. Through bepe-bepean and play activities, participants imagine their lives ten years into the future, projecting their potential and aspirations not only for themselves but also for their communities and environments. This collaborative process emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive and supportive future, where each individual contributes their strengths to build a shared vision and become agents of change. This workshop utilizes a framework created for these activities called Utopia: Imagining and Creating, which combines the utopian approach as a method (Utopia as a method) for imaginative reconstruction of existing social orders. The framework consists of two steps: Imagining and Creating, and applies a co-creation method in the creation step. The workshop leverages the imagination and creative thinking of young refugees through collaborative and innovative approaches aimed at motivating them and reminding them of dreams that have been forgotten due to mental health challenges. The hope is that by motivating them and rekindling their dreams, young refugees can live meaningfully during their prolonged stay in Indonesia before their resettlement to third countries. Additionally, the utopian approach as a method aims to encourage critical reflection on the current conditions of young refugees, thereby opening up spaces for critique and alternative ideas on how the conditions of refugee communities should be shaped.
