Abstract

In SMPN 2 Mesjid Raya, based on the passing grade of students in listening (75), however only some students got the score reached the passing grade (75). The teacher was confused about this condition because just the big 10 of the classroom who could get the point 70 up. She admitted that the listening comprehension of her students was still low. It was proved by the score that students got on the daily test. That’s why, she added the score of students’ daily test and the task score to improve their points. The writer used experimental research in which there were two classes: one was an experimental group which was taught by using dictogloss, and the other was a control group which was not given any treatment. The students in the control group were taught by using non-dictogloss technique as usually used by the teacher in teaching listening. Based on research findings, it was proven by the value of independent t-test that tobtain<ttable that is 0.59<2.00. Therefore, the null hypothesis is accepted in which both experimental and control groups in the pre-test have a similar ability. In other words, there is no significant difference between the experimental and control classes. However, after the treatments were given, the students who were taught by using dictogloss achieved better listening scores than those taught by means of the conventional technique. It was proved by the result of the dependent t-test of each group by pairing the pre-test and post-test that the result of t-test in the experimental group is higher than that of t-test in the control group (9.063>6.265). It indicates that there is a significant improvement in post-test of the experimental group after dictogloss was introduced. Thus, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be stated that dictogloss is effective in teaching listening that it can increase the students’ listening ability.

Abstract

The increasing use of tools that assist English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in achieving writing fluency has drawn attention to the rapidly evolving role of AI in education. This study evaluates an AI-generated writing assistant in English language learning, that is the ParagraphAI text generator, focusing on its potential impact and effectiveness for L2 learners writing skills. This AI-powered writing software curates writing content according to writers preferences. Four seventh-semester EFL students were selected using homogeneous purposive sampling. Data collection involved tests and questionnaires, with subsequent analysis including text comparison to measure Lexical Diversity indices, followed by descriptive analysis. The results indicate that while the AI writing assistant aids in correcting grammatical errors and enhancing text cohesion and coherence, it lacks content density at times. In some instances, the intended message and thoughts of the students were not effectively conveyed, leading to the inclusion of ideas unrelated to the initial topic. This study underlines the importance of considering linguistic and content-related aspects in evaluating AI-generated writing assistants. While the tool enhances grammatical accuracy and structural coherence, further refinement is needed to address deficiencies in content density. The analysis of four seventh-semester EFL students offers valuable insights into the evolving AI in education, prompting considerations for optimizing these tools to better meet the diverse needs of language learners and educators.

Abstract

Development in technology assists teachers and educators to reach goals in teaching and learning easily. Along with advancement of technology in teaching, teachers were expected to utilize this technology such as ICT-based media to improve quality of their teaching. This paper was a survey research which tried to investigate attitudes and perceptions of 73 elementary school teachers toward the use of ICT-based media especially video in teaching learning process. Both quantitative and qualitative data were used to display teachers’ perception. The result of this study shows that almost all teachers considered that using media is very important in teaching. The data from questionnaires shows that most teachers (95,1%) agreed that ICT-based media made teaching and learning process more enjoyable and effective. They also believed that the role of media together with teacher is essential in teaching since the collaboration between teachers and media allow students to understand and memorize materials given easily. However, besides teachers responded positively toward ICT-based media, they also encountered some barriers in applying this technology in teaching, such as : teachers lacked the skills or basic concepts about ICT, (felt were old enough) to use ICT based-media in the future, lacked of eyes vision, inconvenience feeling of using ICT in the classroom, and lacked of ICT facilities at school. This indicates that professional development program is essential for teachers to promote the use of technology in daily teaching practices.
