Abstract

This study aims to assess how the ELSA Speak app helps improve the English-speaking skills of eighth-grade students at an Indonesian Islamic Junior High School and measure how much their speaking skills improve after using the app. The participants in this research included one English teacher and 15 eighth-grade students. The research was conducted using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology, combining both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Qualitative data were gathered through photographs and observation checklists, while quantitative data were derived by comparing students' pre-test and post-test results. In the first cycle of the study, the average pre-test score was 53.93, which increased to 62.47 in the post-test. In the second cycle, students' performance improved further, with the pre-test score rising to 61.67 and the post-test reaching 74.87. The statistical analysis revealed a significant improvement in students' speaking abilities, as indicated by the t-test results. The t-test value for the second cycle (7.665) was notably higher than that of the first cycle (5.502), demonstrating a significant impact on students' speaking skills. The overall improvement from the first to the second cycle was 46.66%. Based on these findings, the study concludes that the use of the ELSA Speak application has a substantial positive effect on the students’ English-speaking proficiency.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate whether the combination of students’ self-esteem and students’ motivation significantly explains their English-speaking proficiency, both separately and simultaneously. For this purpose, 38 students were selected among the undergraduate students of the Islamic Study Faculty, University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka, Indonesia. A quantitative analysis was applied. To measure the students’ self-esteem and motivation, modified questionnaires were used, while their English-speaking proficiency was evaluated by two raters. The result showed a significant influence of the combination of the two variables on the dependent variable; English speaking proficiency. It indicated from the calculation by using SPSS version 17.00 which showed that the value of F-observed 11.463 is more than F-critical (3.27). The multiple correlation jointly between X1 and X2 and Y (Ry12) by 0.629 is significant. Moreover, the R-squared value of 0.396 can be interpreted that self-esteem and motivation together account for 39.6% of the variation in students’ English-speaking proficiency.

Kata Kunci: potensi wisata syariah; wisata bekas lubang tambang; ekonomi masyarakat Abstract: This study examines the potential for developing sharia tourism and also as a means of improving the economy of the community around former mining pits in several districts and cities spread across East Kalimantan. This paper fills the gap in research on its utilization, especially the potential for development in sharia tourism. The main objective of this study is to understand how former mining pit tourism can potentially become sharia tourism and improve the economy in the community. This study uses a qualitative method with a field study approach. Data were obtained through interviews with tourism managers spread across Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kutai and Samarinda City, namely Bukit Durian Villa Ich 4, Taman Gubang, Danau Danurdana, Naureen Mini Garden, Telaga Batu Arang, and Lake View, followed by field observations and document analysis to obtain comprehensive data. The results of the study indicate that all former mining pit tourist destinations have great potential to become sharia tourism. Because all tourist attractions have provided places of worship, especially for Muslims, which are very adequate, also do not provide food and drinks that are forbidden, and provide clean toilets and always maintain security and safety for visitors. This is in line with the DSN fatwa Number 108 / DSN-MUI / X / 2016 concerning guidelines for organizing tourism based on sharia. In relation to improving the community's economy, almost all tourist destinations employ or cooperate with the surrounding community. Such as parking lot management for visitors, eating places managed separately by the community and employees employed at tourist attractions by prioritizing local residents. This research can be initial data for managers to continue the legal system to become a sharia tourist attraction. Keywords: sharia tourism potential; former mining pit tourism; community economy

Abstract

The rapid integration of AI technologies in education necessitates understanding their potential effects on language acquisition and proficiency, particularly in writing—a critical skill for EFL learners. This study aimed to investigate the types of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots and scrutinize the students' perceptions about the impact of AI chatbots on their vocabulary and grammar in EFL writing. Using a mixed method, this study involved 100 undergraduate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students from five universities in Indonesia, highlighting the various AI chatbots they employed in their digital activities. Data collection consisted of questionnaires, interviews, and observation sheets which were analyzed using quantitative descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analysis. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Bing Chat, Ernie, Character AI, Discord Bot, Wren, and Ginger emerged as the most widely used chatbots among the students, with reasons such as helpfulness, work simplification, skill and knowledge transfer, and ease of use serving as the primary motivations for their use. The findings revealed that a significant majority of students experienced substantial improvements in their vocabulary range, syntactic variety, and writing quality when using these AI chatbots. They also unanimously reported AI chatbots had a major positive impact on their language proficiency, particularly in the areas of vocabulary and grammar used in writing. The results of this research suggest that incorporating AI chatbots can be advantageous for improving the writing skills of EFL students. The study also addressed its shortcomings and offered recommendations for future research.

Abstract

This research aimed to know the EFL students’ perceptions toward educational video projects in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) class. This research method was descriptive qualitative, with the research instrument used being interviews with 7 students who had completed educational video project assignments in the CALL class of the English Education Department at UIN Salatiga. The result of the study revealed that most students showcased positive perceptions of the educational video project, proven by some of their testimonial words such as interesting, exciting, relevant to the study, and beneficial. The project helped them to develop their digital skills, especially in video editing, improve their speaking skills, mainly their pronunciation, increase their confidence in speaking, develop their creativity in making an educational video, and learn teamwork. They also encountered a few obstacles during the completion of the project, especially those related to the recording and video editing process, their lack of confidence in speaking in front of the camera, and difficulty finding a suitable location and time for recording.
