Abstract

The influences of globalisation and multilingualism have caused linguistic diversity and emergence of interesting and unique sociolinguistic phenomena, for instance, language contact in intercultural communication. As the study of intercultural communication has yet to be studied at large, this research takes the opportunity to embark on a descriptive study of code choice within intercultural communication, relating to the ethnic minorities in Brunei Darussalam. This investigation aims to identify these ethnics’ preferable code choice within intercultural communication, and their needs and motivations practising those codes in a shared multilingual setting. Involving empirical investigation, this study was conducted on 60 native Brunei ethnics in Mukim Ukong, Tutong District. Research found that study involving multilingual settings and intercultural communications are rather relatively complex sociolinguistic phenomena, where speakers would employ different dialects or languages at an episode of communication, but still mutually understood by each other. To some extent, some speakers also accommodate their speech styles or languages to ease communication process between parties. The hegemony of globalisation, local vernacular, speakers’ background and setting are among others influenced the selection of their everyday code choice.

Abstract

The implementation of Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka (Freedom to Learn) in Indonesia urges universities to adapt and set changes in learning activities. One of the changes is the implementation of Project-Based Learning to increase students’ activeness and creativity. This research aims to assess students’ creative thinking on the implementation of Project-Based Learning. This research was a descriptive case study with a qualitative approach. Purposive sampling was chosen in this research because the sample was chosen on purpose, i.e., those who joined literary criticism class. There were ten students who played as the subject of the research. It used observation sheets and questionnaires to obtain the data. The data were then analyzed to get reliable results of students’ creative thinking assessment. The result showed that some students (40%) strongly agreed that they faced some difficulties in developing their creative thinking. Most of their problems were about developing ideas into coherence text, structuring or organizing a good text, and choosing appropriate vocabulary to avoid repetition in the text. Students also found that project-based learning allowed them to develop their creative thinking in forms of independence, confidence, creativity, tolerance, and leadership. Regarding the result, it can be concluded that project-based learning is proven to be beneficial in developing students’ creative thinking, though they find some obstacles during the process.

Abstract

This study examines how Indonesian audiences respond to LGBTQ+ narratives in Netflix series such as Feel Good (2020), Heartstopper (2022), and Glamorous (2023) through Stuart Hall's Audience Reception Theory. Employing a qualitative approach with 29 participants, it explores how these series influence viewers' knowledge, and awareness, particularly in relation to cultural and societal norms. The findings indicate that these narratives contribute to audience understanding across five key areas: LGBTQ+ identity and experiences, cultural and societal insights, moral lessons, challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, and critical perspectives on representation. Additionally, the study identifies four distinct awareness categories: recognizing LGBTQ+ individuals as human beings, understanding their experiences, acknowledging diverse gender identities, and recognizing the media’s role in shaping perceptions. These results suggest that exposure to LGBTQ+ content in streaming media can promote empathy, broaden perspectives, and challenge existing biases. By highlighting the informative and awareness-raising potential of these series, the study underscores the role of media in shaping public discourse and social attitudes toward gender and sexuality, ultimately contributing to a growing recognition of diverse identities within Indonesian society.

Abstract

Over the past decade, numerous papers have documented translanguaging studies, significantly contributing to the shifting paradigm in this research area. However, comprehensive bibliometric analysis on the landscape of translanguaging research to uncover the prominent areas and potential future directions is rare. Therefore, this bibliographic study analyzed articles from the Scopus database published from 2014 to 2023 using translanguaging as the keyword. The identified retrieval data (2,213 entries) was used to analyze the publication authors, affiliations, source journals, countries, times cited, citation networks, and keyword co-occurrences to uncover the intellectual structure and dynamic progress of translanguaging studies. The data was analyzed and visualized using the Bibliometrix R package and VOSviewer. The results revealed that there has been a steady and continuous growth in the number of publications on translanguaging over the past decade. The USA and the UK are leading countries in translanguaging publications and citations. The shifting themes of translanguaging from 2014 to 2020 focus on language-integrated learning and teacher education. However, from 2021 to 2023, research has risen on various educational and sociolinguistic subjects, including multilingual education, ESL, literacy, equity, classroom interaction, language teaching, home language pedagogy, decoloniality, mobility, and social justice. Further research is needed to explore the influence of technology on translanguaging practices and the capacity of artificial intelligence to improve multilingual communication.
