Abstract

Attempts at introducing Indonesian tourism attractions to the world are often hindered by the lack of ability to provide proper information. This problem is apparent in regional tourism offices, like Banyumas Regency’s, where the personnel are usually not highly trained in English. Therefore, a research was conducted to identify the ability of Banyumas tourism office staff in writing descriptive texts and to investigate whether applying internet-based writing course to the staff can improve the ability. This research is experimental in which a group of Banyumas tourism office staff participated. The group got a treatment, i.e. writing course blended with internet as a medium of writing. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to compare the level of writing ability before and after the experiment. Observations, interviews and questionnaire were also employed to obtain data. The results show that the participants’ ability in writing descriptive texts before the treatment is average. The common problems found were wrong choice of words, incorrect sentence structures, insufficient topic sentences and poor cohesion and coherence within the paragraphs. Comparison between pre-test and post-test indicated that the writing ability of the respondents increased by 30 % in general. Further analysis to the supporting data revealed that the increase is highly attributed to the use of references on the internet, and higher motivation and awareness in writing and revising drafts as they were publicized on-line.

Abstract

In the midst of a multicultural society, cultivating intercultural awareness is a part of the political framework of plurilingualism, as European linguistic policy is based on a multilingual phenomenon. Plurilingualism is a renewal of the individual's ability to communicate on paralinguistic and paratextual aspects and develop intercultural skills, likely their cultural roots. This political hegemony unwittingly developed massively before the infiltration of French language in Indonesia through flavour contact in the form of gastro diplomacy. Starting with the European cookery heritage in Indonesia, this study aims to explore the presence of European flavours in culinary development to set up the attitudes of respect and understanding of the uniqueness of language culture based on French language learners. In addition to intercultural communication skills, this term contains nationalism as a political goal of plurilingualism, which ideally can eliminate cultural contestation. Therefore, the research methods are document studies, observations, and questionnaires, which aim to explore the existence of intercultural flavours as a form of cultural contact, authenticate cultural knowledge, build intercultural awareness, and diplomatic efforts from French language didactic. The result is a significant change, increasing interest in learning French, and also the development of national identity through knowledge, skills and behaviour as a part of intercultural awareness with authentic language materials.

Abstract

The implementation of Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka (Freedom to Learn) in Indonesia urges universities to adapt and set changes in learning activities. One of the changes is the implementation of Project-Based Learning to increase students’ activeness and creativity. This research aims to assess students’ creative thinking on the implementation of Project-Based Learning. This research was a descriptive case study with a qualitative approach. Purposive sampling was chosen in this research because the sample was chosen on purpose, i.e., those who joined literary criticism class. There were ten students who played as the subject of the research. It used observation sheets and questionnaires to obtain the data. The data were then analyzed to get reliable results of students’ creative thinking assessment. The result showed that some students (40%) strongly agreed that they faced some difficulties in developing their creative thinking. Most of their problems were about developing ideas into coherence text, structuring or organizing a good text, and choosing appropriate vocabulary to avoid repetition in the text. Students also found that project-based learning allowed them to develop their creative thinking in forms of independence, confidence, creativity, tolerance, and leadership. Regarding the result, it can be concluded that project-based learning is proven to be beneficial in developing students’ creative thinking, though they find some obstacles during the process.

Abstract

Nganjuk Regency, located in East Java, is known as an agricultural production area. In the past, rice was an expensive food commodity, leading the community to seek rice substitutes. One of the alternatives was the utilization of various traditional plant lexicons such as tales, gembili, uwi, garut, ganyong, gadung, suweg, and kentang ireng. The utilization of these plant lexicons by the Nganjuk community reflects their close connection with nature. This study aims to provide a descriptive and qualitative depiction of the usage of rice substitute lexicons in the culture of Nganjuk society. Research data was collected through interviews and observations. Interviews were conducted to understand the functions and meanings of using rice substitute lexicons in Nganjuk society. The findings of this study provide a deep understanding of the diversity of traditional plant lexicons used as rice substitutes in Nganjuk Regency. It was found that mbote / kimpul, gembili, uwi, garut, ganyong, gadung, suweg, and kentang ireng are plants that have long been known and utilized by the Nganjuk community as valuable sources of carbohydrates. The utilization of these lexicons is not limited to the past but continues to the present. The community's connection with nature is reflected in their knowledge of these plant lexicons. The Nganjuk community has a profound understanding of the benefits and uses of each plant. They appreciate biodiversity and integrate this knowledge into their daily lives. However, this research also reveals a shift occurring in the younger generation. In the modern era, with abundant availability and the dominance of rice consumption, these traditional plant lexicons tend to be forgotten and less known by the current generation. This highlights the need to preserve the knowledge and traditional practices related to plant lexicons as rice substitutes. In this context, this research makes a significant contribution to enriching the understanding of cultural wealth and traditional values related to food in Nganjuk Regency. These findings can serve as a basis for developing efforts in preservation, education, and promotion of the use of traditional plant lexicons as healthy and sustainable rice substitutes.

The significance of this study lies in its potential to examine the textual organization of the tourism website. This study addresses a gap in the literature by focusing on the specific text organization strategies of Mandalika tourism website. This study aims to uncover the underlying textual structures and patterns that contribute to its promotional success. This analysis does not only shed light on the website's organization, but also offers insights into the genre conventions of tourism websites in general. This study uses a descriptive qualitative study focusing on text organization analysis of Mandalika tourism website. There are five steps in analyzing the data. The result shows that Mandalika Tourism Website fits within the advertisement genre, as its primary aim is to promote tourism destinations in Mandalika. However, it only employs seven of these moves, and their application is not strictly sequential. Each move structure employed in the website serves a distinct function and plays a critical role in the overall effectiveness of the tourism website as an advertisement medium. The move structures used can be categorized into three primary functions: informative, persuasive, and reminding. It can be said that conducting analysis of textual strategies in the website helps attracting and increasing tourism occupancy in Mandalika.

Abstract

Gender issues are not unfamiliar around Indonesian people. However, it does not mean that everyone in Indonesia understands the issues. For this problem, an understanding about gender issues is needed and the target of this community service program is students of SMAN 5 Purwokerto.  The SMAN 5 Purwokerto students are the target for this activity as the method that is used for this community service is photovoice, a literacy method that uses photo and caption which are suitable for their age. This community service aims at raising understanding and awareness about gender issues to the young generation to prevent gender discrepancy. By giving materials about gender issues, writing captions, photography training, and mentoring, the result of this program is the SMAN 5 Purwokerto students' understanding  regarding gender issues. This result is proven by their answers on pretest and post-test which were given before and after the program. The pretest results showed that there were some students who did not understand the terms and descriptions related to gender issues (20%), while the post-test results showed that all students could provide and explain photovoice with gender issues (100%). This shows that the photovoice activity was successful in improving students' understanding of gender issues.

Abstract

Higher Order Thinking skills are greatly required by the students to have good critical thinking skills in response to the continuously developing globalization era with its challenges. This research aimed to analyze the distributions of questions found in open-ended reading exercises revealing whether or not the course book is sufficient to develop students’ critical thinking skills. This research used a qualitative method with content analysis to process the data found in open-ended reading exercises of English on Sky 3. Six cognitive levels (Remembering, Understanding, Applying Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating) of the revised bloom's taxonomy theory were used to analyze each reading question and then classified into HOTS or LOTS. The results showed that 6 of 158 open-ended reading questions (3.80%) belonged to HOTS, while 152 of 158 reading questions (96.20%) belonged to LOTS. Analyzing (5 of 6 questions or 83.3%) was the most dominant cognitive level. Meanwhile, evaluating had only 1 of 6 questions (16.7%) and creating even had no distribution. In conclusion, the distribution of HOTS which was lower than LOTS, demonstrated that the open-ended reading exercises in English on Sky 3 were insufficient to develop students' critical thinking skills.
