Abstract

Domestic wastewater in the culinary area is waste water produced from several restaurants. The problem of liquid waste needs to get serious attention, because it has complex characteristics and the remaining results of these activities can cause the volume of wastewater with a high contaminant load that flows continuously over a long period of time. One way to manage the environment is through physical processing, namely by pre-treatment of sedimentation and biological treatment by biofilter anaerobic processes. Anaerobic biofilter is a biological treatment, which uses media as a place to grow and develop microorganisms, with no oxygen in the reactor. The parameters in liquid waste processing consist of three, namely physical parameters, chemical parameters and biological parameters. In the method of combating liquid waste here uses chemical parameters, namely BOD and TSS. Where BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) is the number of milligrams of oxygen needed by aerobic microbes to decompose karon organic matter in 1 L of water for 5 days at a temperature of 20˚C ± 1˚C. Whereas for TSS (Total Suspended Solid) as the residue from total solids held by a filter with a particle size of maximum 2μm or greater than the size of colloidal particles, which include TSS are mud, clay, metal oxides, sulfides, algae, bacteria, and fungi . The aim of this research is that the liquid waste from the activity can be reused as clean water by anaerobic biofilter method using BOD and TSS parameters. The variables used are operational time. Reactor I and reactor II contain media arranged from the bottom up, namely rock fragments, gravel, shells and gauze. The operational time variations used are 0 hours as t0 or the first time the waste exits the reactor, and the time is 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, and 8 hours is a periodic observation of operational time. The results showed that anaerobic biofilter has the ability to reduce the concentration of BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) and TSS (Total Suspended Solid). Based on the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia Number P.68 / Menlhk / Setjen / Kum.1 / 8/2016 concerning Domestic Waste Water Quality Standards, the characteristics of wastewater are obtained before treatment (pre treatment) which is 28- 31 ° C; pH 9,3-10; BOD 30 mg / L; and TSS 29 mg / L. Decreasing the initial state in reactor I for BOD is 25 mg / L. Whereas for the decrease in TSS is 16 mg / L. The results showed that anaerobic biofilter with pumice, gravel and clam shell media had the ability to reduce BOD and TSS concentrations significantly. The percentage decrease in concentration in reactor I was greater than that of reactor II, with an operational time of 6 hours for BOD allowance of 73,54%. While the operational time of 8 hours for TSS is 81,39%.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic has forced college students to study using online learning platforms. Therefore, this study focuses to examine the preferred media to facilitate e-learning and the students’ perception in using e-learning as a means of assessment. This study observes students from two private universities in Central Java namely Universitas Ngudi Waluyo and Universitas AKI, Indonesia, who have all taken English for Academic Purposes (EAP) lecture using YouTube and WhatsApp platform. 123 feedbacks were collected, and 17 students were chosen randomly to verify their answers of the questionnaires. The results of this study showed that e-learning using YouTube was preferable for students compared to using WhatsApp Group. The major problem of utilizing YouTube as e-learning was the slow and expensive data plan. The second result pointed out that most of the students or around 63% of the populations were neutral in terms of satisfaction level of online assessment. It could be inferred that this assessment method was acceptable for the students.

Abstract

The registers of builders in the Javanese speaking community show unique data. It is important to describe the purpose, the characteristics of the formation, and the social context that influence speech to show the complexity of registers that appear in the language community of builders. In order to achieve these objectives, a descriptive qualitative analysis was performed on conversations among builders using a phenomenological approach in a sociolinguistic perspective. Data were taken from conversations between builders, builders with the foreman, and clients with builders. Data were obtained from social media conversations in private groups through passive observer. The data were validated through triangulation method. Based on the results of the interactive analysis, it was found that (1) the purpose of using registers was to make the conversation effective so they were easily accepted and to show the identity of community members, (2) registers of construction community members in Javanese-speaking societies used nominal markers, numerals, adjectives, and verbs, (3) the socio-cultural context built in the conversation between builders was shown from the speaker's needs and speech responses. The speech produced by members of the building community speaking in Javanese society included idealism, norms, rules, and behavior as habits in the community. Sociolinguistics, as a branch of linguistics that studies the interplay between language behavior and social behavior, showed that the builder community used language in socializing to convey and express their field of work and to get acquinted with new members of the community with a special language. Based on the results of data triangulation, it showed that the tendency of Javanese speakers in the construction community did not understand interpersonal relationships and privacy in conversation.

Abstract

In writing argumentative essay, the writer should mind complete parts of the essay and other linguistic elements. The two important linguistic elements are theme and rheme. Since theme and rheme are crucial in clause structure, thematic development is regarded important in the development of text. There are three patterns of thematic development proposed by Eggins, i.e., theme reiteration, zig-zag pattern, and multiple-theme pattern. This research states its objective as to analyze the thematic development occurred in students’ argumentative essay. The occurrence of thematic development is analyzed and elaborated into the finding and discussion. This research is a qualitative research. There are 13 essays written by students. The essays are chosen randomly to maintain the objectiveness of the analysis. Those essays consist of 323 clauses. They are analyzed based on the concept of thematic development proposed by Eggins. The analysis of thematic development of the clauses shows that theme reiteration emerges as the most preferable thematic development pattern. It can be seen that 217 clauses (67,2%) in students’ essay are in forms of theme reiteration. 84 clauses (26,0%) of the essay apply zig-zag pattern in thematic development. Multiple-theme pattern comes as the least preferred thematic development pattern. It only comes up in 22 clauses (6,8%) out of 323 clauses. It can be concluded that students understand the way to develop their essays by implementing combination of thematic development. It marks a successful phase of students’ writing skill. Nevertheless, students need writing practice intensively to make their writing skill grow better.
