Abstract

Abstract Surian (Toona sinensis) is a multi-purpose tree species commonly used in Indonesia for afforestation/reforestation program. In order to better understand the role of surian tree in sequestrating carbon, it is important to measure the biomass of surian. This study aimed to know the biomass distribution in each compartments of surian through a destructive sampling. Eighten trees with the diameter ranging from 2 cm to 30 cm were used in this study. The key dimensions of each tree were measured in the field and laboratory, i.e. diameter at breast height (DBH), height, and wood density. Biomass was divided into five compartments, i.e. stem, branches, petioles, leaves, and roots. The results showed that stem were the dominant part of the total biomass, while petioles and leaves only contributed a small fraction. Above-ground biomass (AGB) yields the highest contribution to total biomass with the root to shoot ratio of 0.24. Carbon content of each tree compartment was relatively equal with another, in average 42%. Wood density was observed relatively constant along tree development in range 0.32 - 0.5 g.cm-3 with average of 0.43 ± 0.049 g.cm-3. Keywords : Biomass, Distribution, Carbon stock, Surian.

Abstract

Bamboo has gained increasing attention as an alternative raw material for use in the manufacture of composite boards. Three layered boards were made from bamboo strand and wood particle to evaluate the effects of resin content and layer structure on the properties of bamboo-wood strand board. Bamboo strand was used as face/back layers, and wood particle was used as core layer. The boards were fabricated using urea formaldehyde resin with three dosage levels ranging from 3 to 9 percent for bamboo strand and 6 percent resin content for wood particle. The mechanical properties and dimensional stability of bamboo-wood strand board were evaluated, and the results were summarized as follows. The bending properties, internal bond (IB) strength and dimensional stability of the board increased with increasing of resin content. Using bamboo strand as face/back layered, slightly increase bending properties of bamboo-wood strand board. However, the modulus constant and IB strengths after boiling test could not be observed. It indicates that urea formaldehyde was not suitable for bamboo-wood strand board.

Abstract

This research aims to confirm the effect of conventional teresan process as a natural drying on Sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria L. Nielson) standing trees, and to develop a new teresan process by adding Arboricide. The experiment was done in dry season at Kuningan, West Java.  For the conventional teresan process, living trees were nicked into the cambial layer around the trunk at 15 ~ 25 cm in height from the ground. For the new teresan process, 25% percent kerosene solution of Arboricide Garlon 480EC was coated at the nick of the tree.Living Sengon trees in dry season showed high moisture content, i.e. around 60 ~ 100%.  By the conventional teresan process, the reduction of moisture was almost the same as control trees.  On the other hand, by the new teresan process coating with 25% kerosene solution of Arboricide Garlon 480EC it showed a large reduction of moisture content from over 100% to 30% in 4 months.  The new teresan process showed the drying speed of 0.66% per day; higher than that of the conventional process, i.e. 0.24% per day.  The new teresan process could be suggested as a high-speed natural drying method in the forest.

Abstract

Characterization of Distilled and Vacuum Distilled Liquid Smoke from Pine Litter WasteAbstractThe solid waste of pine litter in the form of leaves, strobilus, and pine sawdust in the gondorukem and turpentine factories is still minimally utilized and causes environmental problems. However, the presence of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content makes pine litter potential to be used as liquid smoke through the pyrolysis process. Liquid smoke has many benefits, including as an antiseptic and food preservative, but the characteristics of liquid smoke from pine litter are not yet known, so it requires further study. This research aims to determine the characteristics of smoke from pine litter waste, especially the composition of its chemical components, so the possibility for wider utilization can be known. The manufacture of liquid smoke is carried out through pyrolysis on pine litter waste, then given vacuum distillation treatment as a purification attempt. Tests on both samples using yield parameters, pH, total acid value, color organoleptic properties, specific gravity, and analysis of chemical components using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that the yield of liquid smoke and charcoal from waste pine litter is low, but the yield of vacuum distilled liquid smoke is huge. The distilled liquid smoke had a darker color, lower pH, higher total acid, and higher specific gravity than vacuum distilled liquid smoke. In general, the chemical components identified in both groups are divided into carbonyl, aryl alkyl ether, alkane, organic acids, and phenolic compounds. The content of phenolic compounds and furfural as the dominant compounds opens opportunities for use as wood preservatives, food preservatives, topical analgesics, antiseptics, fungicides, and nematocides. Keywords: liquid smoke, pine litter waste, vacuum distillation, chemical compound, characterizationAbstrakLimbah padat serasah pinus berupa daun, strobilus, dan serbuk kayu pinus di pabrik gondorukem dan terpentin masih minim pemanfaatannya dan menimbulkan masalah lingkungan.

Abstract

The southern American genus Praxelis Cass. has 18 species. In Singapore and Indonesia, notably Java, P. clematidea R.M.King & H.Rob. has naturalised. The first record in Indonesia was in Bogor in 2018, although it is unverified elsewhere. Praxelis clematidea was found in Bangka, Belitung, Jambi, Lampung, and Palangka Raya during our exploratory field research in 2020–2023. The naturalised populations proliferate in roadsides, ditches, open spaces, and disturbed areas.  It thrives in a small swampy peat environment in Palangka Raya. Praxelis clematidea has been found outside Java, suggesting it could become an invasive alien species in Kalimantan and Sumatra.

Abstract

Wood vinegar is made from condensation of biomass pyrolysis, contained phenolic compound, carbonyl, and acid that used for insecticide, wood and food preservative, and aroma enhancer. Pine waste as biomass obtained from gum rosin and turpentine processing had a great potential to be processed into wood vinegar. This paper studies the effect of coating rubber wood using wood vinegar made from pine waste against dry-wood termite. The rubber wood (2.5x2.5x5 cm3) was coated with distillated and without distilled (crude) wood vinegar in 100, 50, and 25% dilution. Samples were conditioned within in hours before PVC pipes (2.6 cm diameter and 5 cm height) were installed into wood surface using wax. There were 50 drywood termite fed into the pipes. The samples kept in dark room for 12 weeks. This experiment was conducted according to SNI 01-7207-2014. The result showed that coating method using un-distilled or crude wood vinegar made from pine waste could increase the durability of rubber wood against dry-wood termite. This happened due to the toxic compound in the crude wood vinegar that made coating methods using un-distilled wood vinegar can be used to increase the durability of rubber wood against dry-wood termite.
