Abstract

This study aims to reveal the moderation practices carried out by the people of Ugar village, Kokas district, Fakfak Regency, West Papua Province, through their house doors (Taburar). It departs from the assumption that there are functions and roles on the house door as a picture of mutual trust in which the community holds fast to the village philosophy as a basis for values and norms used to regulate family and community life. This traditional philosophy has enabled the Ugar community to survive and adapt to new understandings that enter their village. Qualitative research method with observation and interview techniques related to cultural phenomena and community activities. Several references were used to enrich the data. This paper found that every house in the Ugar community has many doors with their respective characters. Each character has a philosophy and value that leads to the formation of moderation. The internalization of this traditional value allows the strengthening of religious moderation and respect for other identities to occur.

Abstract

The study focuses on addressing a knowledge gap in learning English for non-EFL students in higher education in Papua. Non-EFL students in Papua sometimes find English unattractive, if not frightening. Translanguaging helps non-EFL students to acquire and practice English skills in virtual classrooms. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of non-EFL students' virtual EFL learning through translanguaging. A qualitative study was conducted through interviews and observations with EFL teachers and non-EFL students attending English classes. There are several non-English departments in one of the higher education institutions in Papua, which are sources of information in this study. The data are then analyzed qualitatively using a discourse analysis framework. The results of the study show that the power of translanguaging for non-EFL students is an option that is always used during virtual English learning. The process of virtual English learning uses different digital learning platforms such as Zoom meetings, WhatsApp groups and Google classroom. The use of this platform has its own privileges as long as it is used in virtual English learning with translanguaging. The process of learning English using different platforms can be described by two activities, such as teacher activities using translanguaging and student activities. Virtual English learning using translanguaging is also illustrated by the use of various language resources owned by students. This is an added value of virtual EFL learning using translanguaging. Therefore, it is highly recommended that EFL teachers use translanguaging during the virtual EFL teaching process to make it easier for non-EFL students to understand EFL subjects.

Abstract

Remarriages are often found in big cities or developed regions. However, the phenomenon of remarriage is common in a remote village in Emete Village, Obaa District, Mappi Regency, South Papua Province. This study investigates the phenomenon of remarriage among women in Emete Village, Obaa District, Mappi Regency, South Papua, focusing on the socio-economic and cultural dynamics that drive such practices and their implications under Islamic law. Unlike the widely studied contexts of urban and developed regions, remarriages in this remote village present unique challenges and cultural nuances. The study explores key questions: what factors compel women in Emete Village to remarry, and how do these marriages align with Islamic principles? Utilizing qualitative research with an ethnographic approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and analysis of religious and social practices. The findings reveal two forms of remarriage: those following legal divorces and those occurring without formal divorce, each shaped by economic pressures, failed previous marriages, and the quest for social recognition. Further, the study underscores the significant legal, social, and economic implications, including non-compliance with iddah (waiting period) rules, lack of financial justice, and risks associated with unregistered marriages. These practices challenge Islamic principles concerning fairness, legal status, and protection for women and children. This research contributes to the broader discourse on Islamic family law by highlighting the need for integrative socio-religious solutions to address the complexities of remarriage in remote communities.

Abstract

The high rate of prostitution in Merauke Regency is a concern because it causes social problems, this phenomenon is not a single phenomenon because there is another phenomenon, namely the high divorce rate in Merauke Regency. This study aims to determine the relationship between female sex workers (FSWs) in prostitution and divorce. Then this research will also look at the factors that cause a FSW to work in a prostitution place. The research method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative research method approach, namely this research aims to determine the relationship between the number of workers in prostitution and divorce that occurs in Merauke Regency, so that the results of the research can be used as a reference for policy makers to control prostitution practices that occur in society. The results showed that this study found that the workers in the prostitution place were the majority of women who were widowed approximately 51%. This proves that as a result of divorce or separation from her husband, these wives or women choose to work in prostitution to fulfil the lives of her and her family. The next research finding is the dominant factor that causes FSWs to work in prostitution because of economic factors that make these women have to work improperly.

Abstract

The practice of polygamy (nage apik) within the Dani Muslim Community in Walesi Village of Jayawijaya Papua exhibits distinctive and unique characteristics. This article aims to reveal the practice among the Dani Muslims who apparently place their wives in the same house (called lesema). A qualitative approach using Spreadley’s ethnographic method serves as the primary data collection tool through observation and in-depth interviews with the informants. A review of relevant literature is conducted to contextualize the article within the existing literature. The data are analyzed interpretively by considering the ethical and emic principles. This article finds that first, polygamy for Muslim Dani is not only a way for continuing the descendants but also for asserting authority over the territory and taking responsibility for maintaining the community’s continuity. Second, living harmoniously in lesema is a practice aimed at preserving communal unity without barriers while also serving as a space for transferring knowledge on how to be a Dani woman. Third, polygamy within the Muslim Dani is seen as an extension of their cultural practices, accepted as a necessity and a solution to social issues within the community. The practice furthermore provides a new perspective on understanding the characteristics of Indonesian society regarding the role of women in households. It also illustrates how Islamic law intertwines with local traditions based on the history, level of understanding, natural characteristics, and lifestyle of its community.

Abstract

Embracing inclusivity and integrating cultural artifacts into mathematics teaching and learning has sparked the attention of many researchers for decades. Despite these conceptual advancements, the design and implementation of inclusive mathematics instruction in Papua, Indonesia, remains limited. Mathematics teaching and learning in Papua are still primarily dominated using government-provided textbooks. Addressing this void, this article discusses the use of Papua Crown as an inclusive mathematics learning medium due to its relevance to learners' daily lives. We highlight the exotic and rich patterns of the Papua Crown, which can be utilized to teach elementary school mathematics, particularly geometry. We employed an ethnographic approach by conducting observations with the artisans and users of the Papua Crown, interviews with two artisans, a museum curator, an archaeologist, and an anthropology lecturer, and documentation. We analyzed the connection between the geometric patterns in the Papua crown and the geometric concept that the teacher can potentially utilize in their practice. The findings elucidate that there are three geometric patterns in the Papua Crown: the triangle, symbolizing the human spiritual relationship with nature and God; the square, representing beliefs and ways of life based on nature; and the circle, personifying the life cycle of Papuan society. We hypothesize that Papua Crown can provide meaningful and engaging mathematics teaching and learning, as learners can identify existing patterns in geometry, particularly 2D shapes. Third, using geometry patterns from the Papua Crown in teaching and learning mathematics is predicted to assist learners in learning mathematical concepts contextually and appreciate culture by constructing knowledge from their experiences. This study is expected to contribute significantly to the development of a culturally inclusive mathematics learning that enables learners to understand mathematics concepts and honor the pluralism of Indonesian society.
