Abstract

Remarriages are often found in big cities or developed regions. However, the phenomenon of remarriage is common in a remote village in Emete Village, Obaa District, Mappi Regency, South Papua Province. This study investigates the phenomenon of remarriage among women in Emete Village, Obaa District, Mappi Regency, South Papua, focusing on the socio-economic and cultural dynamics that drive such practices and their implications under Islamic law. Unlike the widely studied contexts of urban and developed regions, remarriages in this remote village present unique challenges and cultural nuances. The study explores key questions: what factors compel women in Emete Village to remarry, and how do these marriages align with Islamic principles? Utilizing qualitative research with an ethnographic approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and analysis of religious and social practices. The findings reveal two forms of remarriage: those following legal divorces and those occurring without formal divorce, each shaped by economic pressures, failed previous marriages, and the quest for social recognition. Further, the study underscores the significant legal, social, and economic implications, including non-compliance with iddah (waiting period) rules, lack of financial justice, and risks associated with unregistered marriages. These practices challenge Islamic principles concerning fairness, legal status, and protection for women and children. This research contributes to the broader discourse on Islamic family law by highlighting the need for integrative socio-religious solutions to address the complexities of remarriage in remote communities.

Abstract

The high rate of prostitution in Merauke Regency is a concern because it causes social problems, this phenomenon is not a single phenomenon because there is another phenomenon, namely the high divorce rate in Merauke Regency. This study aims to determine the relationship between female sex workers (FSWs) in prostitution and divorce. Then this research will also look at the factors that cause a FSW to work in a prostitution place. The research method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative research method approach, namely this research aims to determine the relationship between the number of workers in prostitution and divorce that occurs in Merauke Regency, so that the results of the research can be used as a reference for policy makers to control prostitution practices that occur in society. The results showed that this study found that the workers in the prostitution place were the majority of women who were widowed approximately 51%. This proves that as a result of divorce or separation from her husband, these wives or women choose to work in prostitution to fulfil the lives of her and her family. The next research finding is the dominant factor that causes FSWs to work in prostitution because of economic factors that make these women have to work improperly.

Abstract

The study focuses on addressing a knowledge gap in learning English for non-EFL students in higher education in Papua. Non-EFL students in Papua sometimes find English unattractive, if not frightening. Translanguaging helps non-EFL students to acquire and practice English skills in virtual classrooms. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of non-EFL students' virtual EFL learning through translanguaging. A qualitative study was conducted through interviews and observations with EFL teachers and non-EFL students attending English classes. There are several non-English departments in one of the higher education institutions in Papua, which are sources of information in this study. The data are then analyzed qualitatively using a discourse analysis framework. The results of the study show that the power of translanguaging for non-EFL students is an option that is always used during virtual English learning. The process of virtual English learning uses different digital learning platforms such as Zoom meetings, WhatsApp groups and Google classroom. The use of this platform has its own privileges as long as it is used in virtual English learning with translanguaging. The process of learning English using different platforms can be described by two activities, such as teacher activities using translanguaging and student activities. Virtual English learning using translanguaging is also illustrated by the use of various language resources owned by students. This is an added value of virtual EFL learning using translanguaging. Therefore, it is highly recommended that EFL teachers use translanguaging during the virtual EFL teaching process to make it easier for non-EFL students to understand EFL subjects.
