Abstract

Background: Most people take self-medication to treat fever without a medical examination. It has the potential medication errors caused by unfair practices. To avoid medication errors, knowledge of fever self-medication among PKK members in Hamlet Bentakan RW 13, Danguran Village, South Klaten District, Klaten Regency, needed to be increased. Methods: The research methodology was descriptive. Thirty-four (34) respondents took action. Before the counseling activity, a pretest was administered to respondents—counseling used leaflet media. A post-test was done after the counseling and training. The pretest and post-test were carried out using a question sheet containing 20 questions about self-medication, health workers guiding self-medication, fever, fever medicine and the proper use of fever medicine. Increased knowledge was calculated by the percentage increase in the number of respondents at the level of certain knowledge categories after counseling. Results: The respondents' knowledge level was in the good and sufficient categories. The level of knowledge in the good category before the counseling was 79.4% respondents, while after the counseling was 97.1% respondents. There was an increase in the level of knowledge in the good category of respondents by 17.7%. In contrast, 20.6% of respondents had sufficient knowledge before the counseling. Respondents with a sufficient level of knowledge reduced after the counseling because the knowledge increased towards good by 6 respondents (17.7% of respondents). The respondent's level of knowledge increased following counseling compared to their knowledge before counseling. Age, education, and occupation all affect one's level of knowledge. Conclusion: Respondents suggested being more selective in choosing and using drugs and asking for complete information from pharmacists or pharmaceutical technical personnel. This counseling is suggested to be carried out regularly in various other villages to reduce errors in self-medication practices.

Abstract

Errors in giving first rank drugs in the pharmaceutical field, especially high alert drugs that must be made a top priority. The purpose of this study was to describe the management of high alert drug storage at the Pharmacy Installation at UNS Surakarta Hospital. This research is a descriptive study with a cross sectional approach. Data collection techniques were carried out by direct observation using checklist sheets and interviews with pharmacists based on pharmaceutical service standards in hospitals. The analyzed data is described in the form of words. The results showed that the value of 100% high alert drug list was in the appropriate category, the high alert drug management policy was 85.7% (inappropriate category), stock card recording at the emergency room depot, outpatient and inpatient care was 85.7% and in warehouse 71.4% (inappropriate category). Labeling of high alert drugs in warehouses, emergency department depots, and 80% inpatient and 60% outpatient (categories not suitable). The layout of high alert drug storage is not suitable because inpatient care shows 80% (inappropriate category) and in warehouses, emergency rooms, and outpatient care 100% (appropriate category). Storage temperature and storage system show 100% (appropriate category). Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the management of high alert drug storage at the Pharmacy Installation at UNS Surakarta Hospital does not meet the standards of pharmaceutical services at the Hospital.

Abstract

Cassia alata L. leaf contains flavonoids which have anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, antioxidants and antifungal effects. The traditional application of it requires long preparation time so we need a formulation with more practical and durable storage is needed. Gel formulation was chosen because it is easy to dry, forming an easy to wash film layer and give a sense of cold on the skin. Gel components affect the stability of the gel. Physical stability is analyzed to ensure that the formulated gel’s quality, safety and benefits meet the specifications and survive during storage. This study aimed to create a gel formula and analysed its physical stability test of Cassia alata L. leaf extract gel. Research design adopted in this study was an experimental laboratory. Optimum gel formula determined by variations in the concentration of sodium carboxymethyl celulose (CMCNa). Gel that meet the criteria of homogeneity, consistency, pH and spreadibility was set as the optimum formula. Physical stability of optimum formula was analyzed by organoleptic, homogeneity test, pH test, viscosity test and spredability test. Gel that meets the acceptance criteria are Cassia alata L. leaf extract gel with CMC-Na concentration of 3% those determined as the optimum formula. Stability analysis of optimum formula didn’t show any changes in pH, color, smell and taste, although it changes of the shape, viscosity and spreadibility were found. The optimum formula gel obtained by the concentration of CMC-Na 3%. results were less stable during the 8 weeks of storage at a temperature of 40°C.

Abstract

Background: Health care during the postpartum and breastfeeding periods fulfils the needs of the mother and baby. 'Jamu', or herbal medicine, is often used for this purpose, but there needs to be more evidence of its effectiveness. The public's insufficient understanding of herbal medicine necessitates a systematic review to assess its contents, benefits, and side effects. The systematic review aimed to examine oral herbal medicines during puerperium or breastfeeding, using the RCT method to provide evidence of IB levels in EBM. Methods: Inclusion criteria were articles in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to investigate the effectiveness of oral herbs during the puerperium and lactation. The methodological quality of articles was tested with the Jadad Score. Results: The five (5) selected articles have good quality (the Jadad Score was 5–8). The study tested five herbs, including fenugreek, honey, bitter fennel, Brazilian propolis, barley malt, and Thai herbal tea "Wang Nam Yean" (a mixture of sappan wood (secang), bael (maja) fruit, licorice, ginger, and tuba (Derris scandens)). Comparators included placebo and other herbs or Domperidone. Most clinical outcomes involved successful breastfeeding, but complications, infant weight gain, and side effects were also observed. Conclusion: Herbs can aid in healthy breastfeeding, but they should be taken cautiously and in conjunction with the assessment, counselling, and support of healthcare professionals. No herbal medicine has the best evidence-based practices because the evidence has not been applied to clinical practice, so changes in clinical practice results have yet to be documented.

Abstract

Background: The diverse plant diversity promotes herbal medicine use for breastfeeding mothers in Klaten to promote postpartum health and breast milk production. However, factors related to herbal medicine use have not yet been studied. Objectives: The study aimed to identify factors related to herbal medicine use among breastfeeding mothers in the Klaten Regency. Methods: The study used a structured survey questionnaire in a cross-sectional approach. Survey participants were recruited from community health centers in Klaten. The survey instrument was validated questionnaires that consisted of predisposing, supporting, and need factors. Logistic regression analyzed factors related to herbal medicine used in breastfeeding mothers. Results: The survey of 111 breastfeeding mothers in Klaten Regency found that 78.40% of respondents used herbal medicine, with most aged 20-35. The most perceived health status of the mother and breastfed child was healthy. Most respondents agreed that herbal medicine was safer and more effective than conventional medicine. The logistical regression revealed that breast milk flow issues (p-value = 0.000) and the belief that herbs are more effective than chemical medications (p-value = 0.008) significantly influence the use of herbal medicine. Conclusion: The study concluded that the significant factors related to herbal medication use were breast milk's smoothness and the belief that herbal medicine is more efficacious than conventional medicine. The belief is often shaped by social culture and family experiences, leading to the possibility of incorrect information. Health professionals are crucial in providing information about herbal medicine and recommending its use to promote health and prevent health problems.

Abstract

The validity and reliability test of the spiritual needs instrument for pregnant women has never been conducted, where spiritual needs are important to develop a coping mechanism for adaptation during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to test the validity and reliability of the spiritual needs instrument for pregnant women. The validity test was conducted by distributing questionnaires to 35 pregnant women during August - September 2024. The spiritual needs instrument used is based on the Patients Spiritual Needs Assessment Scale using a 5-point Likert scale, namely very inappropriate (score 0), inappropriate, not sure, appropriate, and very appropriate (score 4). Pearson correlation test of 38 statements of Spiritual Instrument of Pregnant Women showed that there were 33 valid statements with r count ≥ 0.256 (r: -0.036-0.641) and 6 invalid statements with r count < 0.256 (r: - 0.036). The Cronbach Alpha value with the smallest Cronbach Alpha value if the item is deleted is 0.890 and the highest value is 0.908. This instrument can validate and measure spiritual needs accurately, so that midwives can provide midwifery care by utilizing spiritual potential to facilitate the spiritual adaptation of pregnant women which varies in each trimester
