Abstract

Breast cancer is a type of malignant tumor that most commonly affects women around the world, both in the developed and developing countries, as evidenced by the discovery of 1:38 million new cases and 458 400 deaths from breast cancer in 2008. In Indonesia, breast cancer is now the number one killer and every year there are an estimated 100 new cases per 100,000 population in Indonesia. This can be prevented by spreading knowledge about cancer and early detection by performing routine breast self-examination. The American Cancer Society recommends breast self-examination performed on women aged 20 years. Students of non-health is one component of society that have a high level of knowledge, but less exposure to health problems. This study uses observational analytic with cross sectional approach. The subjects of this study were non-health students from Islamic faculty, agriculture faculty, and engineering faculty. The number of samples in this study was 209 respondents. The level of knowledge about breast tumor, BSE, and BSE behavior was assessed using a questionnaire followed by interview. The results obtained were processed using a computerized system with the Spearman correlation test. The results showed that there is a relationship between the level of knowledge about BSE and BSE behavior in non-health student although statistical tests showed no signifi cant correlation p 0.680 (p> 0.05). The relationship between the level of knowledge about BSE and BSE behavior on non-health student infl uenced by various factors including experience, education, resources, and bridged by a positive attitude. Keywords: Knowledge Level, Behaviour, Breast Self-Examination (BSE), Non-health Students

Abstract

Purpose: To describe shifts in gadgets usage for online schools during the Covid-19 pandemic and the potential for visual impairment in children based on a literature review. Contents: The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted all aspects of life, including the change in learning methods from offline to online. These led to a lack of outdoor activities and increased gadgets usage, especially among school children. Gadgets usage in children could cause visual disturbances in the form of myopia, so it needs to be limited. A cohort study in Rotterdam found an association between computer use and the incidence of myopia in 9-year-olds. A study in Hong Kong compared the duration of smartphone use before and during the Covid-19 pandemic with the incidence of myopia in school-age children. These studies showed an increase in myopia prevalence three times after the pandemic. These can become a public health problem in the future if not prevented early. We recommend that children spend at least 2 hours in an open area to help improve their eyesight. Parents also need to be more aware of eye complaints in their children. Routine annual eye examinations also need to be carried out to detect early vision problems to prevent myopia progression.

Abstract

Purpose: This study explored teachers' perceptions and attitudes toward visual impairments among elementary school students. Methods: A phenomenological approach was used in four elementary schools in Ngemplak, Yogyakarta. Twelve teachers were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed manually using the Clarke and Braun thematic analysis method. Results: Teachers’ perceptions of visual impairment were primarily shaped by personal experiences and access to information, especially from the internet. Informants demonstrated knowledge about the causes, risk factors, and impacts of visual impairments, emphasizing gadget use and nutritional factors. Teachers commonly recognized signs of visual difficulty among students and implemented informal strategies such as seating adjustments and parent engagement. Most informants exhibited a positive attitude, expressing a willingness to collaborate with health services and emphasizing the need for regular vision screening and educational programs in schools. Conclusion: Elementary school teachers understand visual impairments well and approach students with visual difficulties positively. Enhancing teachers’ role in early detection and collaboration with healthcare services may improve school-based eye health programs.

Abstract

Introduction and Objective: Family has an important role in the corneal donor process. Corneal extraction can be done when a potential donor dies, so it requires family involvement and support. The purpose of this study is to explore the family's view on the decision to be a cornea donor so that we can obtain a deep understanding on this issue. Methods: Phenomenological studies were conducted in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on families of prospective cornea donors (n=6) and registered cornea donor candidates (n=6). Data were collected using in-depth interviews and study documents. Data were analyzed using the Colaizzi’s method. Results: Family participants' knowledge and understanding of the urgency and procedure of corneal donors is the main point that constructs their view of corneal donors. Most family participants consider being corneal donors a good thing to do. All participants expressed their willingness to carry out the will of prospective donors, but there was no guarantee they would do so. Fifty percent of participants’ families are also interested in becoming corneal donors in consideration of religious organizations, educational background, and experience participating in activities with the Eye Bank and the donors. Conclusion: Families have an important role in the corneal donor process because they will carry out the will of prospective donors and serve as liaisons for the Eye Bank. Family involvement in the promotion of the cornea donor program is needed.
