Abstract

This study examines the social sustainability of traditional Javanese settlements in Selopamioro Village, Bantul, which maintains its architecture, culture, and natural environment amidst urbanization in Yogyakarta, using descriptive qualitative methods with field observations, in-depth interviews with residents, traditional leaders, and village officials, and secondary document analysis. The results of the study indicate that social sustainability is based on the philosophy of Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana (maintaining human-nature harmony) which is manifested through: (1) minimal high fences (80% of houses) which reflect security based on social capital and communal interaction; (2) pendopo as an inclusive space for access to public services, deliberation, and the economy; and (3) adaptability based on local wisdom, such as conserving teak trees as wedding dowries and building materials. The original contribution of the study lies in the social architecture model that integrates physical design (semi-public space) with community cohesion, as well as the reinterpretation of Javanese philosophy as an operational framework for climate adaptation. These findings offer practical implications for inclusive tourism village planning, culture-based conservation policies (e.g. integration into Village SDGs), and architectural education that emphasizes the principle of "security without fences" to reduce the individualism of modern settlements. Thus, this study confirms that local wisdom is not just a heritage, but a concrete solution to global sustainability challenges.

Abstract

This community service program is located in Sambilegi Lor Hamlet, Maguwoharjo Village, Depok District, Sleman. The development of the tourism industry in Sleman Regency has increased along with the increase in tourist visits to Yogyakarta. This prompted the Maguwoharjo Village government, in this case the Sambilegi Lor hamlet, to take the initiative to develop village tourism in Sambilegi Lor Hamlet. This initiative is supported by various potentials owned by the Sambilegi Lor Hamlet community, both physical and non-physical potential of the local community that have the potential to be developed into a new tourist destination. The main problems faced by partners related to the development of the physical and non-physical potential of the community and also the development of new village tourism in Sambilegi Lor Hamlet include the unavailability of places to market and products of goods and services produced by community groups and places to perform arts groups operating in Sambilegi Lor Hamlet. The next problem is the unavailability of village tourism objects or facilities in Sambilegi Lor Hamlet. The purpose of this activity is to prepare a Tourism Masterplan that realizes the area as a new tourist destination that can attract visitors to Sambilegi Lor Hamlet, so that in the end it also facilitates the marketing process of goods and services produced by the local community. The stages of this community service activity consist of the pre-implementation stage and the implementation stage, by applying the Participatory Rural Appraisal method in its implementation. The output of this community service activity consists of outputs aimed at the Sambilegi Lor Hamlet community, including the fulfillment of the needs of the Village Tourism Masterplan design in Sambilegi Lor Hamlet and the mandatory output of this Community Service Program is in the form of publication in the National Journal.

Abstract

Building orientation and the window-to-wall ratio (WWR) are two critical factors affecting thermal comfort in educational buildings located in tropical climates. This study aims to examine how orientation and variations in WWR influence indoor air temperature through case studies of the FMIPA and FIAI buildings at Universitas Islam Indonesia. Simulations were conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to assess airflow and temperature distribution across different orientation and WWR scenarios. The results reveal that a north–south orientation yields a more stable temperature distribution, while a 40% WWR is optimal for balancing daylight and heat gain. The findings underscore the importance of passive design strategies in enhancing energy efficiency and thermal comfort in tropical educational facilities.
