Abstract

The implementation of nano technology on resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) results in the latest restorative material which is known as Nano-ionomer. The surface texture of the restoration is one of the most important factors that influences the successful of the material usage. Surface irregularity may cause plaque retention, surface discoloration, and gingival irritation. Objective: To analyze the effect of brushing with toothpastes to the surface roughness of Nano-ionomer and RMGIC. Specimens of Nano-ionomer and RMGIC are brushed with distilled water, anti-cavity toothpaste, and whitening toothpaste (6 Specimens each) for 60 minutes, every 10 minutes the surface roughness are measured with Surface Roughness Tester (Ra). The data are statistically analyzed using Paired-samples t-Test, One-way ANOVA, and Independent-samples t-Test. There is an increase in the surface roughness of both group samples after brushing. As for RMGIC, there is a significant difference between the surface roughness values after brushing with distilled water, anti-cavity toothpaste, and whitening toothpaste, while for Nano-ionomer, the difference is not significant. Once compared, there is a significant difference between the surface roughness increase of RMGIC and Nano-ionomer (p<0.05) which can be seen after brushing for 60 minutes. The increase of surface roughness of RMGIC is significantly higher than Nano-ionomer.

Abstract

Tissue engineering aims to restore, maintain, or improve tissue functions that are defective or have been lost by pathological, phisiological and mechanical or traumatic conditions by developing biological substitutes or by reconstructing tissues. Stem cells, scaffolds and growth factor are the key components of engineered tissues and referred as the tissue engineering triad. Scaffold has an important role in providing a microenvironment to assist stem cells to make adhesion, proliferation and differentiation in order to produce the expected tissue. The scaffold should be designed in order to have the expected properties. This paper aims to discuss the function of the scaffold, properties must be owned by the scaffold and the type of material. Size, shape and the type of material, pore size and interconnetivity, influencing the behavior and function of stem cell therefore influence stem cells fate.

Abstract

Sifat mekanis restorasi komposit resin dapat terdegradasi oleh cairan di lingkungan mulut, termasuk makanan dan minuman seperti buah-buahan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk membandingkan kekuatan lentur dua komposit mikrohibrid yang berbeda setelah perendaman dalam air suling dan larutan asam sitrat dengan konsentrasi buah jeruk yang biasa dikonsumsi: jeruk mandarin dan lemon. Empat puluh G-aenial PosteriorTM dan empat puluh spesimen batang uji bengkok 3 titik Filtek Z250TM dibagi menjadi empat kelompok, 1 hari penyimpanan kering, 30 hari perendaman dalam air suling, 30 hari perendaman dalam asam sitrat 0,06 mol/L (jeruk mandarin konsentrasi), dan 30 hari perendaman dalam 0,30 mol/L asam sitrat (konsentrasi lemon). Setelah itu, kekuatan lentur spesimen diukur dengan Shimadzu, Japan AGS-X Universal Testing Machine. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji statistik One-Way ANOVA dan Tamhane Post Hoc. Analisis statistik menunjukkan penurunan yang signifikan dalam kekuatan lentur G-aenial PosteriorTM. Komposit Filtek Z250TM juga menunjukkan penurunan kekuatan lentur yang signifikan dari nilai 138,72 ± 6,26 MPa setelah 1 kali penyimpanan kering, menjadi 93,58 ± 7,69 MPa setelah perendaman dalam akuades, 96,39 ± 3,15 MPa setelah perendaman dalam asam sitrat 0,06 mol/L, dan 96,14 ± 5,39 MPa setelah direndam dalam asam sitrat 0,30 mol/L. Perbedaan kekuatan lentur yang signifikan ditunjukkan antara kedua bahan microhybrid, pada masing-masing kelompok perlakuan, dengan nilai Filtek Z250TM yang jauh lebih tinggi. Disimpulkan bahwa perendaman dalam air dan asam sitrat memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kekuatan lentur komposit mikrohibrid.

Abstract

Power chains elastomers are one of the most commonly used devices in orthodontic treatment. Recently, herbal toothpastes containing siwak extract has been developed, which shown to be more effective in reducing plaque index compared to non-herbal toothpastes. However, siwak extract contains fluoride that may reduce tensile force. This study aimed to analize the effect of herbal siwak toothpaste and non-herbal toothpaste on the tensile force of orthodontic power chains elastomers. A total of 144 power chain elastomer specimens were immersed in treatment groups,Aquadest and Pepsodent Complete 8 Siwak toothpaste solution, Aquadest and Pepsodent toothpaste solution, and Aquadest as the control group. The tensile force of the power chain elastomer was measured using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) after immersion for 6, 42, 84, 126, and 168 minutes. The data were analyzed using one way ANOVA test. The result showed that after the immersion, the tensile force of power chain elastomers in aquadest, non-herbal toothpaste, and herbal siwak toothpaste were significantly different (p0,05). Herbal siwak toothpaste caused a smaller reduction in the tensile force of the orthodontic power chain elastomers compared to non-herbal toothpaste. It can be concluded that immersion in herbal siwak toothpaste results in a greater reduction in tensile force compared to the control group, which was immersed in Aquadest.

Abstract

The use of nano particle composite in posterior region is somehow difficult due to the limited space to place the light source as close as possible to the restorative material. The distance between the light source and restorative material surface leads to decreased light intensity that causing inadequate polymerization. The inadequate polymerization affects the composite diametral tensile strength. Two types of nano particle composite, i.e. FiltekTM Z-350 and Ceram-XTM were tested for their diametral tensile strength, which is affected by the distance of the light source from the composite material surface. Some cylindrical specimens were exposed to light with various distances from the light source, i.e. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mm from the specimen surface. From the six distance variations tested the diametral tensile strength of Filtek Z-350 is 64.09-58.20 MPa with the significant result in 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm distances; and the diametral strenght of Ceram-X is 47.52-42.20 MPa with the significant result in 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm distances. The results of this study show that the increased distance of the light source from the nano particle composite restorative material leads to decreased diametral strength of the two nano particle composites tested.

Abstract

Periodontitis is a common chronic oral disease which if left untreated may cause mobility to loss of teeth. Periodontitis is local infection so a therapy using a local drug delivery system was more convenient than a conventional drug delivery system because the probability of side effects emergent is bigger. There are some drug delivery system types in periodontitis therapy and basically, these systems are using a polymer as a matrix by inserting a therapeutic agent into it so creating a composite structure. This study aims to provide a brief review of polymer-based composites utilized as local drug delivery systems for periodontitis therapy. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to gather information on the various types of polymer-based composites employed in periodontitis therapy. Key aspects such as polymer selection, drug loading methods, and therapeutic efficacy were analyzed. The results show Polymer-based composites have shown significant potential as effective local drug delivery systems for periodontitis treatment. The choice of polymer matrix, drug incorporation techniques, and release kinetics play crucial roles in determining the therapeutic outcomes. Various polymers, including biodegradable and non-biodegradable ones, have been explored for their suitability in this application, with promising results reported in preclinical and clinical studies.
