Abstract

Despite much-advanced therapy developed for bone cancer, prevention of the disease remains the most favorable and low-cost management approach. Bone cancer prevention and education should be initiated with adolescents.  Adolescents are the right group to receive bone cancer education, as they are in an active learning phase and have the potential to develop risky behaviors that can increase vulnerability to cancer, as they are in a stage of active learning but also face the development of risky and unhealthy behaviors. This study aims to assess the knowledge of bone cancer among adolescents in Indonesia. It is a cross-sectional study that uses a questionnaire to evaluate the participants' knowledge of bone cancer. A total of 39 questions regarding family history and general knowledge of cancer are given to the students in a pre-test and post-test format. Between the tests, a group of orthopedic specialists provided a short lecture to the students about the basic knowledge and prevention of bone cancer. The study involved 564 students from junior and senior high schools in Indonesia, with an overall mean age of 14.79 years. Bone cancer was mentioned in the family history of only 0.4% of the participants, but 21.5% to 23.5% were unsure about their own family cancer status. The study found a significant statistical result, indicating that the short lectures given by the orthopedic specialists were effective in enhancing the students' knowledge about bone cancer. The findings suggest that adolescents in Indonesia are still uncertain about their family cancer status and often misinformed about the symptoms of bone cancer. However, an educational lecture or discussion led by an expert in the field has proven to be an effective way to improve the students' knowledge about bone cancer.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of strengthening character education through the integration of local wisdom values in learning. The values of Pepali Ki Ageng Selo contain moral teachings such as honesty, responsibility, and self-control that are relevant to the formation of students' character. This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of the self-monitoring strategy based on the values of Pepali Ki Ageng Selo in increasing self-awareness, behavior control, and internalizing moral values of grade VIII students of Baitul Arqom Junior High School. The research method uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with data collection techniques through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and participatory observation. Quantitative results showed an increase in the average score in the aspect of self-awareness from 60.3 to 74.2, behavior control from 57.9 to 72.5, and internalization of Pepali value from 55.8 to 71.3. Meanwhile, qualitative results showed positive changes in students' behavior who were more reflective, able to control themselves, and apply moral values in daily life. These findings show that Pepali's value-based self-monitoring strategy is effective in strengthening character education based on local culture.

Abstract

Feed availability is one of the main constraints in livestock production, especially in tropical regions where supply is highly influenced by seasonal changes. Banana stems have potential as livestock feed due to their abundant availability; however, they contain low protein and high crude fiber, which requires processing to improve their nutritional quality. One of the methods that can be applied is fermentation using a bioactivator. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different doses of Microbacter Alfaafa-11 (MA-11) inoculant on the nutritional quality of fermented banana stem and Indigofera sp. leaves. The study utilized a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) featuring three dose levels (0%; 0.05%; and 0.1%) and included four replicates over a period of 12 days of anaerobic fermentation. The measured variables were crude protein, crude fiber, and the weight of dry matter biomass. The data were examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at a significance threshold of 5%. The findings indicated that the addition of MA-11 notably raised the crude protein level (P<0.05), with the highest value recorded at the 0.1% dose; however, it did not significantly affect (P>0.05) the crude fiber or the dry matter biomass weight. These findings indicate that MA-11 is more effective in improving protein content than in reducing crude fiber or modifying dry matter biomass weight.
