Abstract

The mathematical connection abilities of middle school children are the primary subject of this study, which aims to understand how means-end analysis (MEA) policies and procedures might assist. Students need to build mathematical connection abilities that enable them to comprehend and associate various mathematical concepts to improve their ability to comprehend and apply mathematics in real-world contexts. This is an essential component of the learning process. The research uses a quasi-experimental methodology by administering tests to the control and experimental groups before and after the intervention. One group utilised the MEA tactics in the mathematics lesson, while the other group remained committed to the tried-and-true method. Data was collected through mathematical connection tests, and then statistical analysis was performed on it to determine whether or not the intervention was effective. According to the findings, students whose courses contained MEA strategies showed a considerable improvement in their mathematical connection abilities compared to the control group. This study validates that incorporating MEA approaches into the mathematics curriculum is a viable alternative for increasing students' mathematical literacy and competence. The findings of this study provide more evidence to support this idea.

Abstract

Geometric thinking level and habits of mind were important hard and soft skills required of prospective mathematics teachers. The purpose of this study is to describe the van Hiele geometric thinking level and habits of mind of prospective mathematics teachers. The descriptive quantitative research method was used. There were 31 female and 17 male prospective mathematics teachers in the sample. The research instrument for measuring geometric level was derived from Usikin's (1982) van Hiele geometric thinking test and a habits of mind questionnaire. According to the findings of this study, prospective mathematics teachers' ability to think geometrically has progressed to the stage of analysis and informal deduction. Furthermore, male prospective mathematics teachers achieved the highest level of geometric thinking, known as rigor. Furthermore, both as a whole and in terms of indicators, prospective mathematics teachers' habits of mind fall into the strong category. Male prospective mathematics teachers have more positive habits of mind than female prospective mathematics teachers. The study's findings can help lecturers, particularly those in the mathematics education study program, determine students' hard and soft skills at the end of the year. Prospective mathematics teachers can also be assigned by institutions based on their geometric thinking and habits of mind.

Abstract

Research on the ontogenic and didactical obstacles vocational high school students face in solving counting rule problems has been limited. Ontogenic obstacles involve students' readiness, while didactical obstacles concern the sequence and presentation of instructional materials. Therefore, teachers must consider both when developing effective materials. This research aims to describe the ontogenic and didactical obstacles experienced by vocational high school students in solving counting rule problems. The participants of this study were 24 grade XII students from a public vocational high school in Cirebon. Using a Didactical Design Research (DDR) approach, this qualitative study focuses on the prospective analysis stage, examining these obstacles. The research instrument included five diagnostic essay questions and interview guidelines. The results revealed that students encountered instrumental-type ontogenic obstacles, particularly in understanding factorial operations. Additionally, didactical obstacles arose from incomplete teaching materials and improper notation, which led to learning barriers. This research offers valuable insights for teachers and researchers in designing instructional materials, especially for counting rules in vocational schools.

Abstract

This study employs a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to explore students' epistemological obstacles in solving permutation and combination problems, with the goal of supporting the development of more effective teaching materials. The research involved 24 12th-grade high school students (14 males and 10 females) and used qualitative methods. Data were collected through five diagnostic essay questions and semi-structured interviews to identify epistemological obstacles in combinatorics. Students’ written responses and interview transcripts were analyzed and interpreted to uncover the underlying obstacles. The findings revealed several epistemological obstacles: (1) students were unable to identify all possible answers from a given problem; (2) students could not differentiate between problems requiring the concept of permutation and those requiring the concept of combination; (3) students struggled to solve problems that differed from the example problems provided; and (4) challenges in formulating a complete solution when faced with multiple conditions, despite being able to calculate partial results. These insights suggest that teachers and future researchers should consider students' epistemological obstacles when designing instructional materials, particularly for topics in combinatorics such as permutations and combinations. Developing learning resources based on these findings may enhance conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills among students.

Abstract

The topic of curved surface solids, especially the surface area of a sphere, is essential for solving contextual mathematical problems. However, limited research has examined students’ difficulties in this area, particularly using Newman's Error Analysis (NEA). This qualitative study aims to identify and analyze students’ errors in solving surface area problems of spheres through NEA. Five 9th-grade students from a public junior high school in Cirebon were selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected through tests and interviews, then analyzed descriptively based on Newman's stages. Triangulation and member checking ensured data validity. Results show that the most frequent errors occurred in the final answer stage, where students failed to reach the correct solution. Errors in process skills were also significant—students could choose the correct formula but struggled with calculations. These findings suggest a need for improved instructional strategies that emphasize conceptual understanding and process fluency. Interactive teaching, visual aids, and targeted practice can help students better comprehend spherical geometry. The study underscores the importance of addressing specific learning obstacles to enhance students’ mathematical problem-solving skills.

Abstract

The development of mathematics e-modules to support learning has been widely conducted; however, e-modules designed with ICARE components on the topic of triangles remain limited. This study aims to develop mathematics teaching materials in the form of an ICARE-based e-module for the topic of triangles for eighth-grade students. The research type used is development or Research and Development (R&D) employing the ADDIE development model. However, the implementation was limited to three stages: Analysis, Design, and Development. The subjects of this study were two mathematics teachers. The e-module was validated by content experts and design experts. Instruments used to collect data included interviews, validation questionnaires, and educator response questionnaires. The analysis stage results indicate that students require alternative digital teaching materials to support learning. In the design stage, an ICARE-approach mathematics e-module on triangles was developed to facilitate student understanding. The development stage included validation tests by content and design experts, yielding highly valid results. The e-module"™s content validity reached 91.35%, categorized as very valid, while its design validity reached 87.21%, also categorized as very valid. Additionally, a practicality test by educators yielded a result of 66.80%, categorized as sufficiently practical. Thus, this e-module is expected to serve as an alternative digital teaching material that effectively supports the mathematics learning process and acts as a self-learning medium for students, thereby increasing student motivation. It is also expected that future research will consider this e-module as an additional learning resource for teachers that can support differentiated instruction.
