Abstract

Abstract

New words are required not only to increase our vocabulary but also to create new sentences. New words are acquired by the process of word formation which can be done in several ways. One of the most commonly used ways to form new words is affixation either through prefixation or suffixation. Confixation or infixation is hardly ever used and is evidenced in the Indonesian Language. Other methods of word formation include coining, clipping, blending, acronym, and compounding. A difficulty arises when one has to decide which morpheme comes first, if he encounters a word with bound morphemes at both sides, since the two bound morphemes are not simultaneously attached to the root. Confixation occurs when morphemes are bounded both ends of the root simultaneously. Confixation can be seen in the Indonesian language. Key words: word formation, bound morphemes at both sides

Abstract

This study investigated the grammar proficiency of first-year students enrolled in the English Study Program during the 2023/2024 academic year. A quantitative descriptive approach with a post-test-only design was employed, involving 22 participants. Data were collected through a standardized 30-item multiple-choice test that assessed 17 key grammar topics, including tenses, passive voice, conditionals, and relative pronouns. The results indicated that students achieved a mean score of 45.14, categorized as "poor" according to the university's academic guidebook. None of the participants reached the "good" category threshold of 71, with scores ranging from 20 to 69. Topic-specific analysis revealed inconsistencies in performance, with only six test items correctly answered by 72% of students. The most challenging topics identified were causative verbs, conditionals, and gerunds, which require higher-order thinking skills, such as understanding sentence structure and contextual usage. Further analysis showed that students from state schools outperformed their peers from private schools, with mean scores of 52.8 and 38.75, respectively, although neither group met the threshold for "good" proficiency. These findings suggest significant gaps in students’ grammar knowledge, particularly in complex topics, and raise concerns about the effectiveness of current teaching methods. Abstract

This article discusses religious values in Nicholas Sparks’ "A Walk To Remember." The novel is considered a representation of individuals holding religious values, facing life with the belief that miraculous events shape one's existence. Conducted as a library research, this study applies mimetic theory proposed by Abrams, asserting that literature imitates real life. The analysis centres on religious values represented by the characters Landon, Jamie Sullivan, and Heghbert Sullivan. The author introduces Landon, who, through his affection for Jamie, experiences a positive transformation. Jamie, a religious woman devoted to serving orphanage children, becomes a catalyst for Landon's change into a better person. Landon holds unwavering faith in Jamie's recovery from illness. Jamie, facing numerous life challenges, proves that love and faith can lead to positive transformations, even for someone like Landon, initially perceived as a criminal and brutal. Heghbert, a priest living with his daughter, showcases the struggles of a father caring for his child. Landon's consistent devotion to Jamie demonstrates the power of love and affection. In conclusion, Nicholas Charles Sparks vividly portrays characters with religious values in faith, love, and devotion. The novel focuses on the positive aspects of life, encouraging optimism and strong faith to overcome deficiencies, suffering, and difficulties.
