Abstract

The elderly are vulnerable to infections around the world. This is because the elderly have a decreased immune system as they age. One of the infections circulating and endangering the elderly is Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Covid-19 causes infections in the respiratory tract and even causes death. Although all ages have the risk of getting infected, people of advanced age have the risk of getting infected and becoming severe due to physiological changes along with the ageing process. This impact can affect their perceptions, attitudes and behaviours in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. This study used a quantitative survey design with cross-sectional. Data were collected from 170 respondents using Google which was disseminated via WhatsApp. The results showed that the majority of respondents had positive perceptions, good attitudes, and good behaviour with a percentage of 94.7%, 55.2%, and 50.5% respectively. The elderly and pre-elderly also need to increase their knowledge about COVID-19 prevention by accessing information provided by the government and related health workers.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacteria that can cause skin and soft tissue infections such as urinary tract infections, pneumonia, mastitis, and meningitis. Staphylococcus aureus infections are usually treated with antibiotics, but most antibiotics are resistant to the bacteria and have side effects of toxicity to the body. One alternative to finding new antibacterials from natural ingredients is to use turi plants. This study aims to determine the content of secondary metabolites in the water fraction of the bark of turi (Sesbania grandiflora L.) and to determine the antibacterial activity of the water fraction of the bark of turi (Sesbania grandiflora L.) against Staphylococcus aureus. This research is an experimental study, using the bark fraction of the turi plant. The fraction was obtained after the fractionation process from the bark extract of turi (Sesbania grandiflora L.) so that the water fraction was divided into several concentrations, namely 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Antibacterial activity test was carried out by well diffusion method. The results of this study indicate that the water fraction of the bark of turi (Sesbania grandiflora L.) contains secondary metabolites of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and phenolics. The antibacterial activity produced was included in the moderate category at a concentration of 25% with an inhibition zone of 9.70 ± 0.14 mm, a strong category at concentration of 50% and 75% with an inhibition zone of 12.37 ± 0.25 mm, and 18.47 ± 0.23 mm, in addition to the category of very strong at a concentration of 100% with an inhibition zone of 23.47 ± 0.09 mm.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has created new problems for the environment as evidenced by the large number of masks, both medical masks (single-use) and non-medical masks, found in public places. The discovery of masks that are discarded in any place, especially in beach tourism areas, is something we usually encounter these days. This has a negative impact on the coastal environment, in the long run, it will be one of the causes of climate change, damage to coastal ecosystems, and ecotoxicity. Sanur Tourism Area is one of the most attractive tourist attractions for tourists both domestic and foreign tourists. The aim of this research is to contribute and provide feedback to the local government especially the Sanitation and Environmental Services Department, to be more concerned about the management of mask waste and the providing of its facilities. The design of this study is descriptive to describe the level of knowledge of Sanur Beach visitors regarding the availability of mask waste disposal facilities at Sanur Beach, it is found that beach visitors have a fairly good level of knowledge (45%) in understanding the impact of mask waste disposal on tourism at Sanur Beach. The majority of respondents stated that the mask waste disposal facilities at Sanur Beach are adequate but the correct procedure for disposing of mask waste has not been found. As many as 68% of respondents stated that there is a closed landfill at Sanur Beach for mask waste disposal. The availability of facilities to manage disposable mask waste is another important factor that influences community action in implementing good waste management. For this reason, it is necessary to coordinate with relevant agencies and Sanur village officials and community cadres to negotiate to provide shared bins at several locations on Sanur Beach specifically to accommodate mask waste only to make it easier for visitors to sort their waste and not mix their mask waste again with other domestic waste.

Abstract

When the host's phagocytic resistance diminishes, Candida albicans can enter the bloodstream and cause a systemic fungal infection known as candidiasis. One fungus that has become resistant to antifungals is Candida albicans. The herb sirih cina is one way to discover novel antifungals made of natural elements. This study aims to determine the antifungal activity of Chinese betel leaf extract against the growth of the Candida albicans fungus. The sirih cina plant (Peperomia pellucida L. Kunth) was used in this experimental work, which used 70% ethanol as a solvent for the extraction process using maceration. Alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and phenolics are among the secondary metabolites found in the ethanol extract of the Sirih cina plant. Using the well diffusion test method, the antifungal efficiency of the ethanol extract of the Sirih cina plant at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% was evaluated. Candida albicans growth is inhibited by the ethanol extract of the Sirih Cincina plant, which is categorized as medium category and has the highest inhibition zone diameter at 100% concentration of 8.20 ± 0.14 mm.

Abstract

Hospitals are one of the institutions that use considerable energy and contribute the largest amount of waste. To reduce the impact, initiatives have emerged in the form of greening hospitals for effective use of resources. Green Hospital is a hospital concept that is designed by empowering the potential of nature as the main resource so that it is friendly to the environment and saves energy expenditure. The existence of Green Hospital is needed to overcome climate change that can cause human health problems and the environment, because hospitals are one of the contributors to pollution. In Indonesia, Green Hospital is still a concept that emphasizes effective and efficient use of water and electrical energy, as well as environmentally sound waste management. The purpose of this study is to analyze solid medical waste management in Saraswati Dental and Oral Hospital Denpasar in realizing the Green Hospital concept. This research is qualitative. Data were collected by in-depth interviews with1 staff at the Environmental Health Installation and 3 staff of cleaning service, observation, and document review. Data were analyzed by data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Data validity used source triangulation and method triangulation. Medical waste management in Saraswati Dental & Oral Hospital Denpasar is generally in has been accordance with the Indonesian health regulation No. 1204/2004, but does not yet have a policy or direction to realise Green Hospital. To achieve Green Hospital, hospitals can start by making policies to implement non-medical waste minimization and increasing the number of personnel in the field of medical and non-medical waste management.
