Abstract

Noyer (1997) utilized blocking and extended exponence to encode pronouns in the conjugation of imperfect verbs in Arabic. His findings were criticized by Stump (2001) and Xu (2010), because the formulation was considered too complex. Xu (2010) offered a unified integrated account based on Optimality Theory while still relying on blocking and extended exponence. However, their for-mulation only focuses on the pronouns of imperfect verb conjugations. So far, the optimality of conjugations of perfective Arabic verbs which are also complex in nature, have not been considered yet in their studies. This study extends the work of Xu (2010) by developing the formulation of the optimal forms of the suffix pronouns of the Arabic perfective verb conjugations. The results of study reveal that several exponences which in different situations, each can realize several assingments. Instead, there is an assignment that is realized by more than one exponen

Abstract

This study explores the use of personal deixis in the Indonesian and Arabic translations of the Japanese manga Blue Lock, emphasizing the impact of linguistic and cultural nuances on translation. Using Alan Cruse's theory of personal deixis, the research examines first-, second-, and third-person categories through a qualitative descriptive approach. Data from official translations by Gramedia (Indonesian) and مانجا العربية للشباب (Arabic) were analysed using purposive sampling, documentation, and content analysis. The findings reveal notable differences: Arabic employs 276 instances of personal deixis with greater diversity due to its gendered and number-specific pronouns, while Indonesian uses 145 instances, reflecting simpler, contextually flexible deixis. Functions such as subject, object, possession, and postposition were more richly contextualized in Arabic. These variations are influenced by linguistic structures, cultural norms, and translators’ interpretive decisions, affecting narrative localization. By examining a genre seldom studied in pragmatics, this research highlights the challenges of translating context-sensitive expressions in popular media and underscores the intricate interplay between language and culture in translation.

Abstract

Arabic Camp is a short Arabic language course program held by the Center for Education and Training (pusdiklat), University of Darussalam Gontor. This program was carried out to enhance students' speaking skills. However, the program seemed to face obstacles when dealing with students’ spelling skills (imla'). Most students can speak good Arabic but struggle to write basic Arabic words according to its rules. Early studies suggested that the Center has yet to have well-established teaching material for Imla’. Hence, this article aimed to design and find its effectiveness in improving students' spelling skills. Research & Development (R&D) methodology and used five instruments were used to collect data such as observation, interviews, questionnaires, tests, and documents. In analyzing data, Paired Sample t-Test is used. The procedures started with the literature review, planning, designing, validating, and experiment. The results of this research were the teaching materials in the form of a textbook. This study also suggested that the textbook validity is in good grade with a percentage score of 84.65%, meaning that the designed materials can be used with some modification and correction. As for its effectiveness, the Sig. (2-tailed) result is (0,000) < (less than) (0,005). It means that the textbook effectively improves students' spelling skills. In conclusion, the current study underscores a collective push towards innovative teaching materials in enhancing language education.
