Abstract

Stunting is a growth and development disorder in children caused by chronic malnutrition, repeated infections, and lack of psychosocial stimulation. It remains a major public health issue in Indonesia, which ranks second in Southeast Asia for stunting prevalence among toddlers. According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the prevalence was 31.8% in 2020. Although declining, the national prevalence remained high: 30.8% in 2018, 27.7% in 2019, 24.4% in 2021, and 21.6% in 2022. These figures still exceed the World Health Organization’s (WHO) maximum threshold of 20%. The Indonesian government aims to reduce the prevalence to 14% by 2024.One key intervention to address stunting is balanced nutrition education for children and their caregivers. This educational approach targets mothers and local health cadres to increase awareness of adequate and quality nutrition for child development. Community empowerment plays a vital role in this effort, particularly in enabling early detection and response to stunting risks. To support this, a Community Service initiative was implemented through a program by the Midwifery Department at Poltekkes Kemenkes Jakarta III. The team developed and provided educational media to assist communities in understanding and applying good nutrition practices, thereby contributing to stunting prevention at the grassroots level.

Abstract

Background: Stunting in toddlers can have an impact on children's health and intelligence in the future, such as the body's resistance to infections or viruses and decreased academic performance. Objective: to train posyandu cadres in improving anthropometric measurement skills in toddlers. Method: The method used in this activity is providing materials, training and simulation of anthropometric measurements. The targets for this activity are posyandu cadres from RW 03, Pulo Gebang Village. This community service activity will be carried out in August 2024 at the RW 03 hall, Pulo Gebang Village. Results: the implementation of this community service resulted in an increase in posyandu cadres' understanding of stunting and anthropometric measurement methods with good understanding from 2% to 76%. Cadres with sufficient understanding are 24%. Conclusion: Improving the skills of posyandu and KIE cadres regarding stunting can improve stunting prevention efforts.

Abstract

Preeclampsia is a severe pregnancy complication characterized by hypertension and signs of organ damage, with a multifactorial etiology involving maternal, genetic, and environmental interactions. This study aims to analyze determinants contributing to the occurrence of preeclampsia through a comprehensive literature review. The research method involved an in-depth analysis of 15 scientific journals, consisting of 8 national publications from Google Scholar and 7 international publications from PubMed, selected based on relevance, credibility, and publication date. Data from these sources were synthesized to identify common risk factors, biological mechanisms, and preventive measures. The findings indicate that the primary risk factors for preeclampsia include a history of chronic hypertension, obesity, gestational diabetes, nulliparity (first pregnancy), and a family history of preeclampsia. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly low calcium and vitamin D intake, are also significantly associated with increased risk. Furthermore, immunological factors such as abnormal maternal immune tolerance, as well as placental dysfunction leading to poor perfusion, play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. The interplay between these factors suggests that preeclampsia is not caused by a single mechanism, but rather by a complex network of physiological, metabolic, and genetic influences. This complexity underscores the importance of early risk factor identification and intervention strategies during antenatal care. Preventive efforts may include nutritional supplementation, weight management, blood pressure monitoring, and targeted medical interventions for high-risk individuals. In conclusion, preeclampsia remains a significant contributor to maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Understanding its determinants enables healthcare providers to implement timely preventive measures and reduce its negative impacts on both mother and fetus. Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise mechanisms underlying these determinants, potentially paving the way for more effective prevention and treatment strategies.

Abstract

Maternal mortality rate (MMR) is an important indicator in assessing the effectiveness of a country's health system. Despite various efforts, the MMR in Indonesia is still high compared to other countries in Southeast Asia. This study aims to analyze the role of midwives in reducing MMR through community-based health programs. The research method used was a quantitative approach with a pretest-posttest design without a control group. The study sample consisted of 50 pregnant women who were selected by purposive sampling in study area X. The intervention program included maternal health education and counseling by midwives. The results showed a significant increase in pregnant women's understanding of pregnancy health, with an average pretest score of 60.04 and increased to 85.6 at posttest (p (00.00) < 0.05). The educational efforts led by midwives have demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing pregnant women's awareness of danger signs during pregnancy, improving nutritional practices, and promoting preparedness for safe childbirth. These outcomes highlight the educational role of midwives as a crucial factor in maternal health interventions, contributing significantly to the reduction of maternal mortality rates (MMR). Strengthening midwives’ capacity and ensuring supportive health policies are essential steps toward optimizing their role in education and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to maternal health.

Abstract

Dysmenorrhea refers to menstrual pain frequently encountered by adolescent girls, which can significantly disrupt their daily activities. The severity of dysmenorrhea can be influenced by factors such as anemia and nutritional status. A survey conducted among 46 high school and vocational students revealed that 39 students reported experiencing menstrual pain, while 7 did not. Additionally, students expressed feelings of fatigue, exhaustion, lethargy, and weakness during their menstrual periods. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between the occurrence of anemia and the intensity of dysmenorrhea among high school/vocational students. Utilizing an analytical survey method with a cross-sectional design, the study included a population of 306 students, from which a random sample of 73 was selected. Data were gathered using questionnaires. The findings indicated that only a few students suffered from severe dysmenorrhea, yet more than half exhibited signs of anemia. A significant relationship was identified between anemia and the severity of dysmenorrhea among the participants. In conclusion, the study highlights that anemia is associated with increased dysmenorrhea severity. It emphasizes the need for schools to enhance health facilities for female students experiencing dysmenorrhea and to provide education on the importance of reproductive health.
